Today, after a week of waiting to hear something about my stolen car, I got a letter in the mail saying it had been impounded the same day I reported it stolen, but they don't share a database with the police so they never called. Now the impound wants $900 plus $120 for the tow to release it. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Tow the line
Today, I paid $125 to get my car back after it was towed. Yesterday, I bought the car. When I got it to my apartment, the office wasn't open, so I couldn't get a parking decal. The same office that towed my car while they were still closed. FML
Driving is expensive
Today, my car was towed. After taking a cab all the way to the lot for $45 and paying the $250 fee to get my car back, my car broke down in the impound lot and needed to be towed to the nearest shop, where it took another $200 to fix, and $50 for the towing. I still have a 3-hour drive home. FML
Today, my car got towed. My money is in my car and they won't let me open my car to get money until my car is "released". FML
Explain yourself
Today, my truck got towed after being parked for ten minutes, even though wasn't in a no parking area. Now I have to pay 500 dollars to get it out of impound. FML
It never rains, it pours
Today, I got a speeding ticket in the mail, at the same time as my car was getting towed. FML
Lovely Rita
Today, I went to lunch with a friend in her car. I told her to park in a lot that had signs warning that we'd be towed, saying, "They never tow anyone from here. In fact, if you get towed, I'll pay for it." When we returned, her car was gone. I had to pay $145 in cash to get it back. FML
Today, I finally got enough money to buy the car I wanted for a year now. It was stolen today too. I had my car for 4 hours. FML
Today, my boss reported to the police that a suspicious car has been parked outside the store late at night. I walked outside and my car was gone. He had my car towed. FML
Today, I let my dad borrow my car. I found out a few hours later that he has had a suspended license for three years. How did I find out? He got pulled over and arrested. My car was also impounded. I'm a college student barely making it as it is. Guess who can't afford the impound fees? FML
Sneaky thievery
Today, we went to clear out our car. It was totaled by a drunk driver without car insurance. It was first towed to the police's impound lot, and then transferred to a garage. Everything was in the car at the police lot, but when we got to the garage, the two 12" subwoofers and amplifier were gone from the car. FML

As long as you can prove that you reported it stolen they shouldn't charge you

Maybe you need to im-pound their faces. You should be fine since they aren't connected to the police.

This is a fine example of wasted privilege, someone else could have come up with something actually clever.

There's a thing called assault have you heard of it
FrostyyFML 15

Agreed. I had my car stolen not too long ago. It was found parked illegally as the officer was writing a ticket for it. Since it wasn't me who parked it there they threw the ticket out. It would only make sense not to charge OP.

I agree. OP find a way to prove it was stolen. if they still try to charge you take it to court and see if the police department can pull up the record that it was reported stolen. you shouldn't be charged for something out of your control.

Actually, not true. I work at a tow yard here in California and the tow yard can still charge you for fees incurred. NOW, I do now that if the vehicle is privately impounded off of private property, here in the states it has to be reported to the local police jurisdiction within an hour of towing. We also have to start the lien paperwork within 24 hours so the owner of the vehicle will be notified of the vehicles where about within a matter of hours instead of days or weeks. This may be different in Canada, but I would assume that as long as OP has full coverage insurance the insurance company will pick up the vehicle and all expenses.

what i have said is logical.. but still not followed at all places. Most govt organisations follow manual ways to harass people.

I agree with #22 I did some time working at an impound lot, though our data base worked with the police. If a car was actually stolen the register owner was notified but they only got 3 free days to pick it up. If OP's car was towed and OP reported it as stolen because it was gone (not actually stolen) OP is responsible for all the fees. I don't know OP's scenario but if OP moved and didn't update their address then a notification could have been sent to an old address (happens a lot).

Ha, if only that were true. No, what happens is that you usually end up having to pay it, and if the police catch the person who stole it, you can get your money back. Or, if you have theft coverage on your insurance, they will reimburse you. You definitely have to pay the impound fee, usually. Now, if you can prove that they should be sharing their list with the police (and they're usually supposed to, just like pawn shops sharing their lists with the police to cross-check for stolen items), then it's on them.

At least your car wasn't stolen.

Think what OP means is that their car was stolen, THEN impounded...

I think what happened is the car was towed and impounded. She came out and saw the car was gone and assumed it was stolen, when really she was just illegally parked.

Sucks OP! Sorry about the whole situation..
Onigori 14
Was it stolen then impounded? Or was it towed because of a bad parking job by you?
sturschaedel 27
Find out the conditions of the compound. If possible, threat them to just leave the car there and take up valuable space.
jude_iscariot 7
That doesn't work. If you leave it, they put a lien on it, then they own it.
Frid_Kun 7
YDI. It is your responsibility to check if the car was towed.
SixthSinEnvy 39
When you find that your car is missing is the first thing you think of to check the tow lots? Really?
TheMathMajor 26
That's the first thing I think to do, yes. I check for signs around wherever I was parked. It could be, though, that OP's car was stolen from their house and then improperly parked somewhere else.

not really, no..
