Time for a freakout
Today, I was on the elevator at work. As it descended, a roach started scurrying about around my feet. I freaked out and started screaming, hitting the panic button without thinking. Now I'm facing a hefty fine for using the panic button when there wasn't a "real" emergency. FML

A roach! OMG. ok I got this, I'll press the panic button instead of stepping on it!

While everyone else is laughing, just realise you did the right thing, OP. Cockroaches are no laughing matter. Those sturdy bastards will be around; devouring stale sweets and power cables long after the rest of humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war.

Hey, it was just a knee-jerk reaction. I might have done the same thing (if I did't step on and kill it). I HATE BUGS!

I would understand why you'd panic like that. Roaches can smell fear.

man, I would HATE to work or live somewhere that a building owner can fine his tenants based upon subjective interpretation of what constitutes an emergency worthy of disturbing the Police Academy drop-out in the security office!

Well considering that most panic/alarm buttons in elevators are routed through to the police/fire department, that would be their call, not the employers.

I like how OP puts real in quotes, as if to mock the person who told her that a roach in an elevator isnt an emergency. Well its not an emergency. Get over it and kill that damn thing.

How is your first impulse to press the panic button instead of squishing it...?

YDI for not shimmying through the ceiling panel and scaling the elevator shaft to safety.
