Thoughts and prayers
Today, after six months of writing a 40 page paper criticizing a famous method, I found out the professor who conceived it has transferred to my favorite college to head the department I'm applying to study in. They require I submit the paper with my application. FML

Awww. Maybe he'll appreciate that you actually studied him and made an effort :)

I'm sure he'll enjoy a good challenge. What's the point of knowledge if not to be challenged?

And he (or she!) may appreciate your balls to stand up for your opinion anyway!

If the professor is actually smart and not some egotistic a-hole then he could possibly appreciate the constructive criticism :) Edit: I now look down and see #4 said something similar.

So long as OP didn't senselessly tear apart the method but simply proposed some possible ways it's not yet perfected, the professor should be impressed.

YOU HAVE BALLS!! (that's an actual tourette's guy quote).

That's exactly what I was thinking. Most professors like people who come up with their own ideas. Just hopefully the paper wasnt insulting

YDI. It's gonna suck, but there's nothing like healthy debate.

Rarely do dreams and reality actually mirror each other... Good luck on the admission process, OP.

You'd think so but professors have egos as well. Maybe this professor is a decent person who takes constructive criticism well, but that's certainly not a given.

Any good scientist will scientist will consider your argument and data regardless of your stance, if he's intelligent at least. Hopefully your intelligence and paper are strong enough to win out!

My excitement at posting this caused me to creat a wording error, I'm sorry! *commits suicide*

Assuming it's science and not something a little more fluid or subjective.

Geokid (OP's username) sounded like a geology buff to me, so I made an assumption based off that and the 40-page paper, and that it was about a "method" which always makes me think of science. Sorry if I'm wrong, I guess I shouldn't assume.

This comment really should have many more thumbs up.

I wouldn't be too worried. Sometimes it's nice to have a fresh head and different perspective. :)

Hopefully he's the kind of person to appreciate criticism. You have nothing to lose at this point.

If the professor isn't a total conceited jerk, he could probably appreciate a thoughtful criticism and incite a debate. Or he could childishly ignore you.

7 - Your comment made me think of Sheldon Cooper for some reason.

Except his grammar was off...

That's bad luck man. I hope he just sees it as a fun but of criticism and doesn't go ape shit and fail you (he shouldn't)

Just be confident. He should take the essay as an professional opinion and be ok with it. Maybe even learn from it.
