Not a good look

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I confessed my feelings to the girl I like, who also happens to be my coworker. She told my boss, and they're laughing about it as I type this. FML
Today, I found out that a co-worker of mine that I had originally hired, trained, and mentored to work in my department for the past 4 years had just got the promotion that I had applied for. He is now my boss. FML
Today, a coworker told me she may be in love with me. I admitted similar feelings and we agreed, since we're both happily married, not to spend time together anymore. Two hours later we were both promoted to run the same project, where we'll be "working hand in glove for the next couple of years." FML
Today, I found out that the man I've wanted to be with for the last year and a half also wants to be with me. Two weeks ago, I got a promotion! I'm also legally no longer allowed to date him. FML
Today, I found out that the co-worker I have been dating and falling for is the same co-worker that had been spreading rumors about me and getting me in trouble with my boss. FML
Today, it was the first day after my promotion. Everyone, including myself, was shocked that I was promoted so quickly. I figured it was because of all the hard work and overtime I'd put in. However, my coworkers figure I'm just sleeping with the boss, and constantly glare and snicker behind my back. FML
Today, my girlfriend who trained me at the job we both work at received a promotion, which left a spot for advancement. I was chosen for the position, and now the guy she's been cheating on me with is training me. Congrats. FML
Today, my boss was fired by the board. A few days ago, he dropped several strong hints that he was going to promote me soon. FML
Today, after working at my job for months, I quit. Why? My boss tried to convince me that we are in a secret relationship, after he told me he loved me. FML
Today, I walked in on my boss masturbating in the supply room of our restaurant. I pretended I didn't see him and quickly closed the door. About five minutes later, he came out, cupped my face in his hands and told me I was getting promoted. I'm happy, but scarred for life. FML

As long as you're not breaking any policies, you should be alright. Congratulations OP!

I think the policy is that they can't date if she's a higher up or even at all since they had to hide it in the first place. Many places don't like a higher up dating someone who they're the boss of for obvious reasons.

Most business prohibit office dating when it is a boss/employee.. they need to come clean immediately or both could lose their jobs

If you like each other and he's a good guy, there shouldn't be a problem. If he gets jealous, well who wants to be with a person who would hate your success anyway? I have my fingers crossed for you OP

While that makes sense, I have a feeling that there are policies forbidding bosses from dating employees.

Policies can prevent them from being together. Many workplaces don't like coworkers dating for business reasons although some only have policies where higher ups can't date the people they're in charge of. Very few places have no policies against it. My boyfriend and I applied for the same job once and we had to hide the fact we were dating. Luckily neither of us got hired and now we work separate jobs but still. It's not that he's a bad guy, it just conflicts with business priorities.

It should be ok as long as there's no company policies being broken. However, you should sign a contract with the company, and even between each other, saying neither, particularly him because you're his superior, can't sue or go after the other/the company should the relationship go bad. In Canada, even if company policy allows it, an employee can go after their boss for sexual harassment through the human rights commission, even if the relationship was legitimate. And they will win because the boss is in a position of power which does/can exploit the inferior party, even if it isn't intentional. Bosses are also expected, as an authority, to not put employees in a position where they could potentially be exploited and their rights violated. It isn't romantic, and I know people don't like to think of their relationships possibly going bad, but it's better to be safe. If it isn't needed, then no harm done. If it is, then you have the law on your side and the means to protect yourself.

Listen OP, I know it may be awkward at some points but don't let other's basic judgements change the way you feel. Keep kickin ass

I know in the US that it is forbidden to date anyone you work with, but does it apply in Canada?

That's not true. It's up to each organization to set its own policy on that issue. Every place I've worked has had different policies regarding co-workers "fraternizing", but they all strictly forbid boss-subordinate sexual relationships. Without that, companies are vulnerable to harassment lawsuits.

When offered the promotion, you should have immediately informed whoever your superior is about the relationship. Wether you intend to continue the relationship or not, the company needs to know so this cannot come back to bite you in the ass later.

This is perhaps the most level headed comment I've seen on this cesspool of stupidity.

Except that it might have resulted in the promotion being revoked, or OP even getting fired. We don't know the company's rules.

I'd be careful! I was promoted to supervisor and I'm not supposed to fraternize with those below me on grounds of termination! But best of luck and congrats!!

Promoted? Aww, that sucks. Fyl!
