Not a geography major
Today, I had to show my daughter where the USA is on a map. She's 17, and we live in the USA. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, while teaching my history class, a girl asked me where North America was. She lives in North America. FML
Today, my teenage daughter tried to convince me that the UK is a part of Canada. After I pulled out a map to prove her wrong, she got all angry and defensive, and said that nobody's perfect at "geometry". My daughter is an idiot. FML
Today, I discovered that apparently my six-year-old daughter actually believes that the United States is the only country with advanced technology. FML
Today, my daughter tried to argue with me that Scandinavia isn’t a real place. She’s 17. FML
Today, I was telling my girlfriend about how my parents are flying out to Japan today on vacation. She was shocked at how short the flight will be, because "It's on the other side of the world." We live in the USA, and it seems I'm dating a Flat Earther. FML
Today, I had to slowly explain to my daughter why her Facebook profile isn't a valid piece of ID. FML
Today, my only daughter and her boyfriend sat me down for an important talk. I was thrilled, thinking they were engaged or pregnant. They actually wanted to tell me they're moving half way around the world. FML
Today, I have been teaching my 5 year-old step-daughter how to read and write. She came bounding up to me with a piece of paper and said, "look what I did". It was a letter that said "My dad misses my real mommy, not you". FML
Today, my daughter asked me why NASA hasn't gone to the sun yet. She's seventeen. FML
Today, I had to explain to my 18-year-old daughter why she can't pull a duck face pose for her driver's license. She still doesn't believe me. FML

You would be surprised at how many kids actually don't know this stuff then.

Unfortunately it's becoming more and more like this and it's not just teenagers. The general public does not know basic information like what does D.C stand for in Washington, D.C. Or what country we declared our independence from (a woman said Mexico!!) or who the first president was. They do know all the latest sports stats or celebrity scandal, etc. this is why the bankers that run this country can get away with so much crime. They know the general public are always being distracted by trivial things. You can like sports and other things but u have to know these basics and stay informed

I had to learn that in first grade. I use this as exhibit 1 in showcasing that our school standards are getting lower and lower, not higher like they should.

I just can't... how is it possible that nowadays some young Americans are so deprived of such very basic knowledge?

I could identify almost every country on the map by age 10. then again i went to Milton Hershey School. a private institution something like a boarding school for "disadvantaged youth". it was free since we were "poor kids" and the education was outstanding.

Unfortunately teachers don't really teach those types of things anymore. The only reason I know the world map is because my mother made sure I knew. A big part of education is up to the parents. Putting in the hard yards after school is the best thing you can do for them.
