You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone
Today, my only daughter and her boyfriend sat me down for an important talk. I was thrilled, thinking they were engaged or pregnant. They actually wanted to tell me they're moving half way around the world. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, after my daughter fell in love with a city I didn't want to move to and I caved to make her happy, after a year of which she got engaged at the age of 18 and moved with her fiancé back to his hometown not far from where we moved from, she called to tell me she's pregnant and my first grandchild will be hundreds of miles away. FML
Today, I called my mother to tell her that I got engaged. In the 15 minute conversation that followed, 13 were spent listening to how this is going to affect her. FML
Today, I introduced my girlfriend to my dad. I thought it was a good idea at the time, at least until he took her aside for a private chat. During the chat, he told her all about my two previous marriages and advised her to "get out while you can". FML
Today, my daughter and her boyfriend excitedly told me that after months of trying they are finally pregnant and that I'm going to be a grandmother. This would be great news if they weren't 15. FML
Today, I had to call a parent and tell them that their special needs daughter is pregnant. FML
Today, my daughter told me she is pregnant. The father is the foreign exchange student who just moved back to Germany. FML
Today, I found out that my daughter not only has a boyfriend, but that they're trying for a baby. She's barely 15. FML
Today, my daughter told me she wanted to divorce me. FML
Today, I heard my boyfriend talking with my father in the backyard. I thought he was asking for my hand in marriage. He was actually telling him about his plans to break up with me. FML
Today, my eldest daughter announced she was getting divorced. She never even told me she was married. FML

Good news is video chat and internet technology is advanced enough to keep in contact. Sorry to hear that, but try to keep the relationship with your daughter open and positive. She may become successful and your support of it may make your bonds deeper. Then every year or two come visit her (or have her come back for a week or two or switch every other year). Bonus if you visit her, you get to go tourist in a place you’d never see otherwise (as long as she’s not going to N. korea or something)

When I immigrated to the US age 21, after getting married to a US citizen, I left my home and my mom. My family! It was the first time I actually extremely appreciated my mother, and the bond between her and I, as well as myself with my sister went through the roof. We are closer than ever and even though it's hard sometimes to be apart, we are able to visit sometimes (haven't since Jan because of Covid, obviously) and those times were better than the years leading up to my leave. Relax and encourage your daughter!!
