Today, I got into an online debate about reproductive rights, healthcare, gun laws, and education in the US, all in one thread. Someone told me, “This is the greatest country in the world.” I asked, “Based on what?” He blocked me. FML

Today, I was chewed out and blocked by several of my “friends” because I never post anything political, and am therefore right wing. FML
Today, I was berated, then unfriended and blocked on Facebook by an Ukrainian girl, all because I reacted with a “Care” on Facebook on her status about her family back home dealing with the war. Apparently, I’m a “hypocrite” for voting for warmonger Biden, thus “getting them in this mess.” Huh? FML
Today, like for the last year, I’ve been on Tinder. I was having a great conversation with a man and we were planning a date for next week when he asked for my number. When I politely responded that I’d rather wait to exchange numbers after meeting in person, he blocked me. FML
Today, the guy I've been dating online for the last year and who I'm madly in love with blocked me. FML
Today, my country told me that I don’t matter, and my right to my body and the care for that body is not my own. FML
Today, I was on my favourite forum when I saw a guy ranting at some pro-lifer fanatic. For fun, I replied "umad bro?" apparently moments after the forum founder also left an angry reply. I'm now banned for a month for "trolling the founder" and all my posts have vanished without a trace. FML
Today, I had a debate at school. I had diligently studied my position, digging up historical parallels, researching the economics, and preparing citations. I lost to a guy who just yelled, "Tax the billionaires" to every question. FML
Today, my husband got so worked up in an argument that his blood pressure spiked and he burst a vein in his eyeball. He was arguing with a guy on the internet, trying to convince him that Donald Trump is evil. We're not even American. FML
Today, after I'd decided to give online dating another shot and I matched with someone who seemed interesting, during our actual date our conversation quickly devolved into a debate about whether pineapple belongs on pizza. I ended up blocking her after she sent me a thesis on the subject. FML
Today, I posted on a forum asking if I could be a moderator. Instead, I got banned. FML

American propaganda always tells you to look down your nose at dictatorships without free speech so you don’t look up at countries with free healthcare, sane gun laws, clean streets, better food…and also free speech.

Even if he were factually incorrect on every specific issue, and I'm not saying he is, he's right about this. In most other countries, including so-called free countries, he (or you) could take a contrary view of the official government line and get his (or your) ass locked up, charged with an actual crime. Not marginalized, not de-platformed, not shouted down, locked up by the authorities for expressing a contrary opinion. Just the act your were engaged in - disagreeing online without fear of criminal penalties - is a strong argument supporting his assertion.

You're right, we aren't the best by any metric. And the other commenter who claimed we are, is full of shit. No, pretty sure you can't be jailed for expressing a negative opinion of the government in any of the countries that exceed us in other measures of freedom and general wellness.

There used to be an old me titled “arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics…”. At the risk of pissing of those who don’t have any humor, i’ll skip the rest. That said, it’s pointless to argue on the internet. They may be an idiot, but at the old addage, “it takes one to know one.” You aren’t going to win a conversation on the net and arguing is pointless and stupid.
