Today, I locked myself out of my apartment. I've just realized that I could have spent $30 on an Uber or Lyft to my parents' place to grab the other set of keys instead of calling a locksmith and paying $280 for him to drill a hole through my doorknob, rendering all my keys useless. FML

Today, I had to call a locksmith because I got locked out of my apartment. It cost a total of $350 to break in and repair the lock. Not even 3 hours later, I dropped my only key in the sewer. FML
Today, I was in and out of my room to cook dinner at 11:30pm and accidentally locked the door. I couldn't jimmy it by myself so called a locksmith who used two of those inflatable car door things and a screwdriver to pop it in 30 seconds flat. Cost me 180 bucks. FML
Today, I paid a locksmith $100 after I locked myself out of my apartment. All he did was hit it, and it flung open. It wasn't locked, it'd just got stuck. FML
Today, I locked myself out of my car. While walking home to retrieve the spare, I realized I locked my house keys inside the house this morning. Now I must decide whether to break into my house or car. FML
Today, I locked myself out of my apartment. But it’s 2024, so I have a smart lock I can unlock through an app on my phone. Except I also left my phone inside. The worst part? I had to ask my neighbor to call my mom so she could unlock my apartment from her phone. FML

Today, I locked my keys in my car. After looking for the spare key for hours, we called our insurance company, who then sent a "locksmith" with a wedge and a bar to open my car. All he did was break the driver and passenger doorhandles. My stuff is still inside. FML
Today, after being without my car keys for two days, I finally got a locksmith to unlock my car on the off chance I'd left my keys in there. $170 later, the car was open, but I didn't find my keys. Frustrated, I threw the paperwork in the garbage... where I spotted my keys. FML
Today, I spent forty minutes trying to break into my own house after being locked out. After finally getting in through a small unlocked window, I discovered my keys in my pants pocket. FML
Today, after locking myself out of my house, I let myself into my car to wait on someone with a spare key. It took me 15 minutes to realise the house and car key share the same ring. FML

Your locksmith ripped you off. They're trained to pick the locks. Drilling the lock is a last resort option...

picking the lock would have been a lot cheaper... but I'm guessing the locksmith wasn't happy with the cheap alternative.

Sounds like he did that intentionally to take advantage of you not knowing they're supposed to pick the lock first. Unless he did try to pick the lock and either sucks, or your apartment has a deadbolt on it.

Deadbolt doesn't matter. It's the same mechanical function as a doorknob except it's key access only.

To be fair to you, OP, those sorts of things are often afterthoughts. My sister did something similar once; locked herself out of her car and called me to come help her, only to remember after I showed up that she had a spare set of car keys in her office.

Get a touchscreen keypad deadbolt. No key required. I can even lock/unlock mine from my phone. And everyone (up to 30) can have their own code (my mom has one). It's easier for them to remember their own, and you can track who has used it that way too.

Yeah, not sure why you didn't go to the leasing office. They have spare keys to every apartment, ya know for maintenance issues and whatnot. Sure, they probably would have charged you a small fee, but still much cheaper than the cost of the locksmith and new door handle/keys.
