Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, my mother-in-law confessed that for the longest time, she had fantasies about killing me for "ruining" her daughter's life, basically because I'm not wealthy enough for my mother-in-law's standards. She made sure to let me know the situation hasn't changed at all. FML
Today, my boyfriend's mother told me she had fantasies about throwing him out a window when he was a baby because she was so depressed and couldn't handle the stress. The worst part is he wants to get married. She'd be my mother-in-law. FML
Today, my mother-in-law called to find out how the first week of school went for the kids. She spent most of the call complaining about her husband. I'd like to send her a bill for her trying to use me as a therapist. FML
Today, my mother-in-law said I was manipulative, awful, mean, incapable of love, and the reason for my husband's depression. All because I got him to agree to inpatient psychiatric care after he expressed suicidal thoughts that included our children. She says it's ridiculous and he's fine. FML
Today, my mother-in-law had a bitch fit because I had a miscarriage and my husband and I are having a difficult time. It’s her birthday and she said I should, “stop being an attention-hogging drama queen” and that, “shit happens, get over it” She doesn’t see what's wrong with her statements. FML
Today, I was feeling depressed. I overheard my mom crying on the phone. She said, “If my daughter kills herself, who’s going to do the dishes?” FML
Today, my mother-in-law passed away. She wasn’t even cold yet when my wife told me she wanted a divorce. Apparently, only her mother guilt-tripping her kept us together the last few years, but now she’s dead, she’s dumping my ass. FML
Today, I can no longer tolerate my mother-in-law. She's not a bad person, but anytime she opens her mouth it is only to criticize, chastise, scold, or blame me. My husband is too terrified of her to ask her to leave our home. FML
Today, my mother in law accidentally cc'd me on an email she was sending to my husband, telling him that his youth is fleeting and that he should leave me while he still has time. FML
Today, my mother in law likes to baby my partner. Gets him drinks, kisses him on the forehead, talks to him like he's 8, does everything for him. And she gives me death stares, especially when she hugs him when I'm around. FML

Tell him you will commit suicide if he keeps paying her bills. See who wins.

(1) This is an example of why the treatment of depression or mental illness is best left to a mental health professional. We have no way of knowing if MIL is actually depressed and likely to kill herself or if these threats are a form of manipulation to get what she wants. If it’s purely manipulative behavior with no actual serious depression, I would call her bluff in a heartbeat. (2) Does MIL make consistently bad spending choices that cause her to be unable to pay her bills such as excessive spending on gambling, “recreational” drugs or alcohol or even tobacco, or being a “shopaholic”? If something like this is the root cause of her financial problems, then those problems have to be addressed or no amount of financial assistance will ever be enough. (3) Everyone except MIL has my sympathy in this FML. And it is possible that MIL actually is in dire straits and desperate, but I have serious concerns about how she is getting the financial help she seems to need and why is she in this apparent situation. By the way, before you condemn me for being heartless - I have suffered from depression on and off much of my adult life. I never threatened to commit suicide to get what I wanted and would never do so. I considered suicide when I was at the bottom of the pit (not as a threat). But this sounds more like sick, manipulative behavior to me than depression.

He’s already putting his mom before his wife so I don’t think she’ll win that battle either

When you get married you forsake all others 😬 Your parents come first until you start your own family

Is this affecting you financially or just him? Has she got other kids? Who can help? What is her financial situation actually like? This is a hard one to answer without more info.

this. instead of being petty like the top comment says she's his mother. if she genuinely can't pay her bills he should support her if he can.

If she threatens suicide, call the cops to do a wellness check. An aggressive threat like that deserves an aggressive response to show you take her word seriously. He needs to stop enabling this manipulation but stopping payments. Threats like this are manipulative and used to torture and extort people. It's abuse, plain and simple.
