Keeping it real
Today, I went to visit my dad for the first time in over a year, as I have been studying for my Master's degree in history halfway across the world. The first thing he said to me? "So, gotten a real job yet?" FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I spent my first day with my parents for the first time in a year as I've been away at university. My dad went to work, and my mum spent the whole day playing mahjong with her friends as they all told me "how fat I've gotten" and how "boys won't like it". FML
Today, I talked to my father for the first time in several years. I proudly told him that I have been attending Beauty School. He looked me up and down and said, "Doesn't look like you've learned much." FML
Today, I spoke to my dad for the first time in over a year. I've been volunteering in Mongolia, I have no running water, freeze my ass off everyday and communication with anyone who speaks English is scarce. One of the first things my father said to me was, "out of sight, out of mind." FML
Today, I saw my dad for the first time in almost five years, at his funeral. FML
Today, my father contacted me for the first time in close to 2 months. The first thing he did was ask if I wanted to buy some weed. FML
Today, I got the guts to call my dad for the first time in nine years. He said he "almost didn't remember" he "had another daughter." Another? FML
Today, I was talking to one of my supervisors at my new job. He asked if I knew a professor at the school I recently graduated from, and I decided to babble on about how shitty of a professor he was and how much I loathed his class. He then looked at me and said, "That's my dad." FML
Today, my dad's cremated remains came in the mail. This is the first time in my entire adult life that he has visited me at my home. FML
Today, after over 30 years, I visited my home country. My nephew was driving us around, with my daughter in the backseat, and I was proudly telling him about her MBA in English and Communication. We passed by a mugging, and she went, "Did you just seed what I just sawed!?" Without looking at me, my nephew just went, "....a degree in what again?" FML
Today, I got back home from work and casually asked my dad, "What's up?" He casually replied, "Wishing I'd had a son instead." and stared glassy-eyed at me until I left the room. FML

Argh! This could have been my FML! What is it with parents who don't get the concept of a post graduate course? The time and effort that goes into it equals a full-time job, but pays (if you are lucky) shite. Of course you do this mostly because you hope for a better job at the end of the very, very dark tunnel...

I'm getting my masters too, but in something else. History is so fascinating and I bet that's a very fulfilling degree. Keep your head up and your eye on the prize. I know how difficult that can be.

I have a master's degree in history and I can say with full certainty: it equips you with badass research skills, if not anything else. Academia is a rough road, but the degree has been useful for me in communications jobs.

please don't get me wrong, but history is all interesting and stuff, but what do we really benefit from it?

Good for you for doing what you want to do with your life. I'm soon starting my degree in Drama, and I do get similar responses. If you have a genuine business plan as to what you'd like to do, then you go ahead and you do it. I've no doubt you will make everybody very proud!
