Grades go both ways
Today, I was scolding my 8 year-old son because he was getting bad grades in school. I told him that he should get straight "A"s like his friend Ceejay. He told me that comparing him to Ceejay was unfair. When I asked why, he said, "Because his dad is actually smart." FML

There's no need to compare to the other kids in the class. What if the kids parents do everything for him? Tell your child to do what they can do, don't push them to be something more than what they are. YDI. And #2, scolding doesn't necessarily mean hitting.

You don't compare your kids to other kids. It's unfair and incredibly rude to your child. If he's not getting A's, maybe something else is up. Maybe CJ's dad actually helps his kid with his homework? And your kid's 8 years old. They don't even get letter grades yet I don't think. You should be encouraging him.

YDI for comparing your son to some else's son. I'm a teen and my parents compare me to others. It's not a nice feeling. So stop comparing. that's your son, be proud, even if he's dumb.

I agree with your son. It's terrible that you would compare him to another child. He shouldn't be expected to make straight A's until he's proven that he's capable of it.

Isn't it just CJ? Not Ceejay?

Straight A's are excellent. So are B's. You know, a C is an average grade. Even teachers forget that. I think there is way too much pressure on kids these days. then again, kids shouldn't be getting F's and D's.

Youre an ass for trying to turn your eight year old child into a grade zombie. Poor kid.

What the kid hears is probably that you rather have ceejay as your son

Enough with the 'dont compare your kids' talk! Asian countries compare their kids all the time! In studies, you don't have to do well, you only have to do better. OP is stressed enough convincing his child to study. How else is he supposed to motivate him?

"How else is he going to motivate him?" Really? Have you ever heard of a thing called psychology? I mean, I really hope you are trolling, but seriously, comparing is the dumbest thing mankind has invented thus far. I shall now quote Einstein to avoid me having to actually get mad: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”. Everybody who thinks that comparing person A with person B is a good thing should be ashamed of himself / herself. You want OP to motivate his kid? How about not scolding an 8 year old kid? And how about having OP putting some effort in himself? I am 99% sure that OP barely ever goes to a parent-teacher meeting and that OP barely ever helps his kid with school / homework. Why am I so sure? Because the kid pointed out his friend's dad was actually smart, which makes me pretty sure that OP can't / won't help his own kid with his homework.
