Go get it

Today, I was excited to teach my new puppy how to fetch. I threw the stick, and he just stared at it, then stared back at me with his tongue lolling out, as if to say, "You threw it. You go get it." I’ve now spent the past 30 minutes fetching my own stick, hoping he'd join in. Nope. FML

Halloween

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.

That not how you train a dog to fetch a stick. These days when there are millions of videos and howtos online 5 minutes of looking would have saved you the 30 min.

But how do you get the dog to watch and understand the video?

I'm imagining your puppy as hyper intelligent and responding, "Really? Hurling an inanimate object to crudely simulate the behavior of a prey animal, in the hopes of triggering some ancestral instinct to chase it? *groan* Very well. *heavy sarcasm* Oh heavens, the stick is fleeing. I must pursue and subdue it, or I shall surely starve, because it isn't the 21st century, and I know not the convenience of formulated food in a bowl." Joking aside, he probably just wasn't in the mood for fetch. Try again later.
