Today, I told my mom I was going hiking with a couple of friends and wouldn't be back for four or more hours. Not even two hours later, she called the cops and reported us as missing. She didn't realize that we wouldn't have service up the canyon so we could call her back. FML

Today, I went on a hike with friends, but as I'm the worst outdoorsperson because I rarely venture outside of the city, I ended up getting lost in some woods after straying from our group. I ended up having to call 911 to be rescued. My friends will absolutely not let me live this ordeal down. FML
Today, I lost my phone during a hike up Mount Washington. Luckily, it was reported to the office, and they called my wife. Too bad we had already been driving for at least four hours. FML
Today, I went for a hike with the local search and rescue volunteer group that I recently joined. I got lost and spent 5 hours wandering aimlessly. FML
Today, I have no cell phone reception as I am visiting family who lives on the side of a mountain. They told me there was service on top of the mountain, so I hiked up. Only when I got there did I realize I'd left my phone back down at the house. FML
Today, I noticed that my mom had left the house without her cell phone. I called her phone to let her know she forgot it. FML
Today, my mom and I made the bad decision to go hiking for some mother-daughter bonding even though we had little experience. My mother tumbled down a mountain named Tumbledown and I couldn't even enjoy the irony because I had to half carry her all the way back to the car. FML
Today, my mum and I decided to go on a hike. Beforehand we left my car at the end of the trail and took my mums car to the beginning. After 4 hours we arrived at my car. I had left my keys in mums car. It was a long walk back. FML
Today, even though I was very clear before I went on holiday that I was going completely zero contact to de-stress, my mother rang at least twice a day. When I stopped answering the phone, she found the direct number of the local police station in a foreign country and sent them to find me. FML
Today, my mother panicked and was about to report me missing when I didn't answer her calls while I was at a movie. I'm 31, and have lived on my own for over 10 years. FML
Today, my family and I drove to a mall an hour away. We split up, and I went into a store by myself. A little later, I get a call from my brother asking me where I am. They had already left to go home and didn't notice me missing from the car. They were already halfway home. FML

Honestly in this case I do not see it as abusive. Her kid was gone on a dangerous trip for "too long" and she got worried. I think it's sweet.

OP told their mother that they would be gone longer, if she was so worried about the 'dangerous trip' then why didn't she remember that? It seems more like she didn't listen fully or didn't think it was too dangerous until after OP left. And I have to agree being overprotective can really mess with a kid. Usually as soon as they get a little bit of freedom they go crazy because of it and become huge partiers and sleep around because of what they never had the chance before.

It's not caring, it's abuse. Like the parent that calls you up and threatens to call the cops when you won't come home that instant. When you are 35 and visiting for Christmas holidays, and getting coffee with a friend late.

No, OP told his/her mother about being gone for 4 or more hours, the mother panicked when she couldn't call him/her because she didn't realise that there would be no reception there. So she still should have waited the 4 hours before reporting him/her missing.

Untrue. You can report them missing at any stage. It is possible however the police might not immediately take the report seriously.

It depends on the case. Say a young child or elderly person with Alzheimers went missing, the police should investigate no matter how long they've been missing.... Say if a 30 year old husband went out on the piss with his mates, they's go by the 24-48 hour rule

I think it would depend on whether OP is a minor or not.

No set rule on that, it varies per county/town usually. Some will let you if they are not busy, others make you wait. Minors, mentally unfit or medically unfit are able to be reported prior to 24 hours almost everywhere though.

I know emergency services here tend to wait until your return time has expired before considering starting a search unless there is serious wether or other event that would make them act earlier.
