Today, at the DMV, I was told I had to prove, with a doctor's note, that I was an amputee and that my disability was permanent to get my placard. Apparently, placing my prosthetic leg on the counter wasn't proof enough, and is considered "threatening". The police were called. FML

Today, I was so happy to finally get my disabled parking badge but I was not prepared for the abuse from members of the public because I don’t "look disabled." Just this morning a woman refused to believe I have a prosthetic foot, and tried to make me pull up my pant leg to show her. FML
Today, I got stopped at the bank by security for carrying a weapon and threatened to call the police. I had to prove my “metal stick” was not a weapon. I'm partially paralyzed in one of my feet and have to walk with a cane. FML
Today, my workplace demanded a doctor's note to prove that I can’t stand for long periods, and would benefit from a desk job. I guess my above-the-knee amputation and spinal surgery scars don’t count as evidence, but a piece of paper from a doctor is just fine. FML
Today, after parking in the handicapped spot of a lot with my placard, an older couple with their 7-year-old grandchild came up and yelled at me for being a lying asshole and taking the parking spot. When I showed them my prosthetic leg, the kid started crying and guess who got yelled at again. FML
Today, I received a $250 ticket when I parked my car, that has the disabled placard, in a handicapped spot at a Wal-Mart. The officer said she watched me get out of the car and walk to store without appearing to be disabled. I'm 59 years old, have a steel rod in my spine and a prosthetic hip. FML
Today, I parked in a "Disabled" space. A woman and her kids comes yelling at me about how I don't look disabled and I was just being selfish. I roll my pants up to reveal two prosthetic legs. She then yells at me that I should have warned her before showing my legs since it could scare her kids. FML
Today, I told a guy he should be ashamed of himself for parking in a handicapped space. He hit me with his prosthetic leg. FML
Today, I was at the DMV getting temporary tags for my new car. While waiting in line, a huge fat lady behind me felt the need to run her finger down the scar on the back of my neck. FML
Today, while shopping, an old man came up to me and told me I should be ashamed for walking around fake limping, and that it's horrible to mock people who actually limp from serious injuries. I wasn't faking, I was born without my right leg and I was getting used to my new prosthetic one. FML
Today, at the DMV, I was told to push my forehead against a vision testing device on the counter to activate a blinking light. When nothing happened, the employee started yelling for me to push harder. I tried again, only to knock the whole thing into her. FML

Even if there's a policy, an employee should be given the authority to accept such cases without abiding by the policy.

And here I thought that no state's DMV could possibly be worse than ours here in California. This is yet another thing I have learned from FML.

I work at the DMV and I've dealt with people like the OP. He should understand that even though it is apparent you are handicap, it is state law to provide the form from the doctor. If we don't have the form we get in trouble with the state office and can get investigated and fired. I understand it's frustrating but being yelled at for just doing your job is also frustrating. Maybe OP should understand that EVERYONE has to work inside the limitations of the law and no one gets special treatment.

Yes, it is very stupid, but government usually needs documentation for this crop. School sent me home when I was a kid because I gashed my head open, I needed a doctor's note to excuse me for the rest of the day. Visibly seeing my stitches wasn't good enough

They can't put you leg into the file. Doctor's note is more convenient.

Amputee veterans in Canada have to prove every three years that they are still an amputee. I'm not sure if Canada expects limbs to grow back or what... Should have beat them over the head with your prosthetic leg :) Would have made you feel better for a moment at least
