Today, I tried to contact a support group for parents of mentally ill adult children, because I’m at the end of my rope. Turns out there are none in my area and if I want one I’ll have to start it myself. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, after years of struggling with poor mental health, my depression convinced me that no one would ever care enough about me to help if I reached out. I called the local suicide hotline anyway. They didn’t answer. Twice. FML
Today, I decided to try an online therapy site, seeing as I have been feeling very lonely and don’t have any friends to talk to about my issues. After filling out all the initial forms, the site told me there was no one available to speak to me. FML
Today, and every time I meet a new therapist for support, I’m told that my issues are out of their scope of practice, and I get referred to someone who’s supposed to more experienced, and then get told the same thing. I’m too fucked up to even get the therapy I need to get better. FML
Today, I’m massively depressed and I live in a state that will prosecute you for attempted suicide, but will do nothing to help you afford mental health. FML
Today, while scrolling through my contact list, I realized I have more therapists and support workers than I do friends. FML
Today, I started self-harming again. My therapist keeps switching the subject when I try to bring it up, and my best friend has called me attention-seeking and selfish so many times in the past year that I’m too scared to ask for her support. I have nobody else to talk to. FML
Today, I wrote a post about how I was thinking of attempting suicide. Not one single person contacted me to see if I was alright. FML
Today, I had to break off all contact with my toxic ex and my even more toxic adult daughter, for my mental health and suicidal urges. My elderly parents, who don’t think mental health is a thing, not only took their side, they’re taking me out of their will and putting my daughter in. FML
Today, I called a suicide prevention hotline. No one picked up. FML
Today, I was at hospital and the nurse asked me for an emergency contact number. I was about to say my wife, but she divorced me last month. I couldn’t think of anyone else. My parents are dead, none of my other relatives live in this country, and I have no children or friends. FML

Mental health is no joke. You’re a strong person and a strong parent. And if I can make one suggestion: try seeing if there’s anything like that that can be done over Zoom.

If you build it, they will come. Seriously though, how do you think those other support groups got started? If you start one up you'll probably find that there are other people in the area who also need help. I know it probably sounds like a lot of work to start one yourself but it might even turn out to be good for you to have helped others as well as yourself.

Yep. And there’s probably a broad/national unifying body for these groups, and they can help you with starting a local chapter if you reach out to them. You could start off online (Reddit and Facebook groups come to mind) to find others who are interested, possibly find someone to lead the effort with you, organize and schedule your first meeting, and advertise it. Like the other person said, if you build it, they will come! I understand you probably have your hands full already with your adult child and the rest of real life - if starting a chapter isn’t for you, I’m positive you can find support groups that meet online. Good luck, and I hope your struggles get better!

Ok, then start one. Was that so difficult? Next question?
