Balancing act
Today, my physio told me that due to my illness, roller-skating is too ambitious an activity. I grieve who I used to be, and the life I used to be able to live… FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I tried to go rollerskating with my kids. I wasn’t even able to fully stand up before I fell and broke my leg. FML
Today, I bought some roller skates to go with the set my daughter got for her birthday. I haven’t skated since I was a kid, but I figured it was like riding a bike and I couldn’t have forgotten altogether. My broken coccyx disagrees. FML
Today, I didn't know how to stop while rollerblading and unfortunately, had an accident that broke my wrist. Then, because I have soft bones, I developed moderate scoliosis. It's been about 10 years of scoliosis. I can no longer rollerblade, downhill ski, cross country ski, or snowboard, even if I wanted to. FML
Today, I was feeling motivated enough to try longboarding again after a long stint of being a couch potato. Not even 10 minutes into cruising down the road, my board catches on a rock. Now I've got a sprained wrist and two inches of road rash on my right arm. So much for getting a little exercise. FML
Today, I managed to break my ankle by running it over with the wheelchair I've used on a daily basis for the last 6 years. FML
Today, I had my first ice skating lesson. I had to wait five years for a rink to open in my town, two weeks for my lessons to begin, but only ten minutes to fall and hit my tailbone so hard that I can't walk. FML
Today, I realized thanks to two injuries I have that I can't do two routines my doctor wants me to do. I strained something in my right hip so squatting causes me pain. Jogging is also out of the question because my right foot healed wrong when I sprained it, and requires pricey foot surgery to fix. FML
Today, at the age of 21, I've been diagnosed with arthritis in my knees. There goes my volleyball career. FML
Today, I finally give rollerblading a try, since it looked so effortless. I put on all the gear and started skating down the street. Within seconds, I lost control, crashed into a garbage bin, and rolled directly into my neighbor's yard. I was so embarrassed that I just lay there pretending I was "just fine, really" while their dog licked my face. FML
Today, I was talking to a guy I met on a dating site, and he asked if we could meet up and what we should do. When I suggested ice-skating he told me he was in a wheelchair, so I said we could go for a walk instead. I realised my mistake the moment I sent the message. FML

OP, I can sympathize. I survived cancer but chemotherapy left me with neuropathy in my hands and feet. That changed my quality of life. I hate it, but I am still alive and getting around… There some health conditions from which we never fully recover. What you have to do is to find things that interest you and apply yourself to that. You might discover something you like even better than skating, but you won’t know until you try. Not everything you try will ultimately be a good interest, but something will likely be.

🫂 Grieve, spend a few sessions in therapy straightening yourself out and then focus on finding what you *can* still do and pick new things you enjoy doing from the selection. My spine and right leg crapped out on me 20 years ago, I still miss my roller boots, bikes, dancing and martial arts but there's still a load of things I can do. I just never imagined it would involve things like Loom knitting, chair yoga or wood turning but here I am. Same for you, you just have to go find them. You don't feel like it right now but once you start finding things you *can* do, you'll start feeling better about life in general. It's a loss and a change, a lot of people never get over the loss, those that do can keep themselves out of the depression of it a lot better. Even the most gold medaled Paralympians still get hit by the depression stick about it but adapting, evolving and thriving generally means it hits you less, it's not so deep and you can pull yourself back out a bit easier and quicker. I've been told it's not entirely healthy to find things I can do just to spite the disabled bits but it works for me. The feeling of 'ha! **** you! I win' is petty as hell but sustaining. Start with the little victories and work your way (sensibly) up from there. You'll be surprised at how many you find yourself collecting once you start.
