Today, I tried to buy a bottle of wine from the supermarket. The scrawny, acne-ridden kid at the checkout asked to see my ID. I didn't have any on me, since I'm 37 years old and didn't expect to be asked stupid questions. I complained to his manager, only to be asked to leave. FML

You shouldn't be surprised, that is the law, ID is required to purchase alcohol. Its nothing new. This is your fault for not having your ID...

For the last time. OP is in the UNITED KINGDOM. In the UNITED KINGDOM you are only required BY LAW to ID someone who you do not think is 18, although most shops WILL ID anyone who looks under 21. Many companies now have a policy of ID -ing all who look under 25. But whatever way you look at it, OP had the right to not expect to be ID -d ALSO, in the UNITED KINGDOM you are NOT required BY LAW to carry ID. Not even your drivers licence. Not even when you are driving. No, he should not have insulted the cashiers personal appearance, but yes, all of you who keep saying its illegal not to card etc are WRONG.

If it's the store's policy to ID everyone, as it appears it might be since they carded a 37-year-old, then the OP should either comply with that policy or shop at another store. He deserves it for expecting the policy to apply to everyone but him and then insulting the cashier when he refused to bend the rules.

the my knowledge, there are NO chain supermarkets in the united who card everyone, particulaly not the larger ones. As i belive i have made it clear, only a handful card up to 25 e.g. when i had just turned 18 i was buying alcohol in my local tesco, the cashier was not 18 so had to ask his supervisor, she looked me up and down and decided it was ok, no id required, because she judged me, and 18 yr old girl, to look 18. but clearly a 37 year old man NEEDS to show id.

In south Carolina if the person looks under 40 we have to card. If you were under the legal age and were sold alcohol and they found out that you were underage, the store gets fined, the person who sold it gets fined and the employee can potentially lose his/her job because they can no longer sell alcohol or tobacco. Its a rule, get over it.

I depise people like you. People like you think that you are so great because you are a customer and you have the power over the people working at the store. The kid was doing his job like everyone replied. I would of kick you out of the store too for being such an ass.

idk why when people get older they are not going to get carded. ur an idiot

Its not his fault you couldn't get the bottle! It's yours. Who dosent carry thier ID with them all the time? He's just doing his job.

Since you described him as scrawny and acne ridden, something tells me that you were less than friendly when you spoke to both him and the manager. I would have kicked you out, too. Besides, many cities require carding for anyone who appears under 40, and many stores do that independently of the laws. God forbid the kid doing his job inconvenienced you in some way.

Well legally they have to no matter how old you look....
