Today, my soon to be mother-in-law sent me a birthday present. It was a necklace for me to wear at my wedding. The pendant is a well known lesbian symbol. I'm a woman and I'm marrying her son. FML

Well known lesbian symbol ? I dont know any lesbian symbols ...

I bet you cry "First!" when you're having sex, too...

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt that she doesn't have a clue. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain things like that to my mother...and no, she's not elderly and senile. FYL anyway. Hope you find a way to handle the situation with grace and dignity.

Perhaps she's just a parent who isn't aware of all the latest politically correct BS. (there's no such thing as a "well-known lesbian symbol" for most of the world) You received a gift. Stop whining.

What 'well known lesbian symbol'?

http://www.glyni.org.uk/assets/images/being_gay_grphx/sym_les.gif There ya go.

You know, I have never actually seen this particular symbol used myself. However, being a reasonably intelligent person (according to my own very low standards that is) I believe I could have taken a WAG that this was in fact, oh, something to do with females and togetherness... Not just a new age symbol for best friends (female of course). The male "best friends" version could have the -> through the 0 in the middle, but again, that just means friends too.

"The male "best friends" version could have the -> through the 0 in the middle, but again, that just means friends too." Wow, those must be REALLY good friends.

I'm going to assume that she means the pink triangle, not the two interlocked female signs... I mean, you'd have to be a complete moron not to know what the latter meant. The first, however, could easily be mistook as having nothing to do with lesbianism.

Why would you wear a pink triangle in your wedding?

I suppose if it was a triangle shaped precious stone, such as a pink ruby, unmistakably the symbol but still some sort of attractive piece of jewelry, the mother-in-law might think it looks nice. /shrug

No, I was on while doing a blog entry for history class

She's probably just that clueless. It'll be something you two can laugh about later.

God, no one knows what it means to have a "******" life. This is turning into MLIA with people just entering what they think will be good stories instead of following the spirit of the site. By the way sweetie, what's well known to you might not be well known to others...I bought my friend a pot necklace in high school because I just thought it was a pretty plant.

Oh boo hoo get over yourself. It still is insulting and even if she didn't mean it, that's crushing to the ego.

Today, I went on FML and saw my FML wasnt accepted. I was bitter so I slagged off someone elses FMLs. FML. Get over yourself, sad sad woman.

Maybe she really didnt know.... did u actually wear it to u wedding? maybe no one will notice.

Easily fixed by wearing it on a long chain. A very long chain. Thanks for being clear about being a woman marrying a man.
