Today, my boss requested that I re-organize every file in the office, because she wanted the filing cabinets alphabetized right to left, not left to right. To thank me, she came into my office to give me one uncooked ear of corn. I think my boss has mistaken me for some kind of farm animal. FML

This isn't a FML because the OP is being paid to do a job so why should they get anything extra? Hell in this economy they should be glad to have a job and a free ear of corn! Part of working means doing bullshit tedious work sometimes, but its what you do. I dont expect my boss to give me a gift every-time I finish a project (although he has brought in fruit or drinks for us before).
There is no FML at all in this one, yeah an ear of corn is a little weird but how is the OP's life even remotely fucked?

I think it's the frequency with which NON FML stories are posted that is so annoying and that's why people comment about it.

Move the filing cabinets that are on the t left to the right and the ones on the right to the left. Seems pretty simple. AND you get corn. Win win in my book
filing cabinets are usually stacked... like A-D are all in one cabinet, but in separate compartments. if you simply move the ones on the left over to the right and vice versa, then you'll end up with something like Y-Z, U-X, Q-T, M-P, I-L, E-H, A-D.
i do agree about the corn FTW though.

I was at Walmart earlier and they had ears of corn on sale for $0.20 apiece. 20 cents for an ear of corn! Unless she grew the corn herself she might as well have tossed you a quarter for your trouble.

I can't believe anyone would say this isn't an FML. FMLs don't have to be life-destroying experiences--just bizarre inconveniences that throw off your whole day. And besides, the FML here is clearly not doing a whole bunch of work and then getting an ear of corn, it's that the boss went out of her way to thank the OP, but she did so by giving her something completely random and kind of sad (you can't share one ear of corn), instead of something substantial or meaningful. All she got was corn.
Anyway, this sounds like something my boss's boss would do to me, so I empathize.

the ear of corn thing is a bit odd- though I actually do eat corn on the cob as a lunch or a snack. you are lucky to have a job. if it really makes it easier for her to do her job to have the files switched, then so what. even busy work is work after all.

at my old job, the boss of my boss came and tried looking for a file. When she coudn't understand our filing system, she just started ripping everything of the shelves and got everyone in our department and several other departments to come and spend the next 3 weeks re-alphabetizing and filing them to "fix" it. If she had just asked somone in my group for help, we could have had her file for her in minutes and saved everyone a major 3 week headache. This was a government job.

I just got back from a trip to Ohio. Neighbors bring each other a few ears of fresh corn from the garden -- even corn with worms -- and the recipients are *damn glad* to have it. You don't know a perq when you get it.
Ask a few questions -- did the boss grow the corn themselves? Is the person sharing food that they would otherwise put on their own table and serve to their own family? I think you're just not very appreciative.
