Man or woman?

Today, I went into work to change a shift I was unable to work. I phone the first person on the employee sheet and they promptly answer by saying "You still work here? I thought the manager fired you..." I was fired last week and have been showing up for shifts without anybody noticing. FML

#25 - On 07/08/2009 at 8:41am by easylazy

bullshit they would have noticed u were putting in hours! im sure managers can see who clocks in and who clocks out dumbass

#39 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:46am by kflaherty008

@#39: Unless they have a system like I have had at two of my jobs... where you write in your start and end time on a sheet of paper by your name and the people/person that does payroll only sees the paper on the day they make out the cheques.

#40 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:49am by wolfy

That was probably the SECOND time somebody tried to tell you.

I bet someone stole his stapler. :(

#18 - On 07/08/2009 at 7:37am by bartoron

Sorry I have to call BS. Employers are required by state law to inform you of termination in person. They are also required to issue your final pay check.

Not to mention that it's hard to believe you where working shifts when you probably werent even put on the schedule. And doesn't the work have a Time Clock?

#4 - On 07/08/2009 at 6:12am by Timrlf

Agreed

#5 - On 07/08/2009 at 6:13am by whenskiesare_gre

State law? The OP does not list the state in which he lives, so how could you know if such a law applies in his state.

#6 - On 07/08/2009 at 6:17am by xpxp2002

For all we know, he might not even be in the US, so the same laws won't apply if it's the case.

You know, there's other countries aside from us. XD *lol*

#7 - On 07/08/2009 at 6:20am by Moemoemoe

Not BS, this actually happened to me when working at a movie theater. I was apparently fired, but was never informed. They simply removed me from the time sheet and never told me. I showed up one or two times more because I had always worked the same days, and didn't think to check. They finally told me during one of those shifts, but let me finish out the day.

#24 - On 07/08/2009 at 8:38am by ncoppola

It happened to me. I was left off the schedule, never told i was actually fired, talked to another of the managers who said I wasn't, got told by MY manager that he'd just "forgotten" about me, and then a YEAR after I got let go, he made a comment about how he'd fired me last summer. And the best part is, he apparently fired me when I was out of work for a week due to a medical reason for which I'd brought in a doctors note. Heh.

Funny, that I was never fired. I quit, according to my record of employment. Way to go, douchebag.

#46 - On 07/08/2009 at 12:56pm by Butterbuns

#46, please tell us you were being paid, during that year?! XD Right?? I sure hope so. *lol*

#61 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:03pm by Moemoemoe

Why wouldn't you have been notified of being fired?

#9 - On 07/08/2009 at 6:42am by emilysanftwsom

Because some employers just suck..

When I worked at Wendys, they often wrote people off the schedule instead of firing them, saying you quit, so that you wouldn't get unemployment. If they didn't have a real reason to fire you, that was the easiest way.

#49 - On 07/08/2009 at 2:35pm by iamme

Where I currently work, during fall semester, they fired 2 girls by not writing them on the schedule. I was working with 1 of those girls the day the new schedule was put up and then the other 1 came in to get food. They both asked me about it. I knew they were being fired and I'm a manager [not the one that does the hiring/firing, though], but I didn't know why they were being fired. I just told them to call our head manager since I didn't have the information they wanted.

#50 - On 07/08/2009 at 3:54pm by sickinlove13

Did you get your shift switched out?

Work sucks... Just put up and shut up unless you are a very high in demand associate. I have to do the same thing you do though. I'm just a fucking peon in a huge business.

#13 - On 07/08/2009 at 7:07am by 24788

Just go back into your office with an automatic rifle and clear out everyone like in the movies.... (JUST KIDDING) :p

#15 - On 07/08/2009 at 7:18am by DieterDerBlau

Wtf? And they still put you on the roster? :s

I know how it feels to be fired without being told..it happened to me the other week. And whenever I called to find out what was happening I got told the manager wasn't there and she'd call me back.
But its okay, I got a job that pays double wha they were paying me whe I left, so they can suck it.

#16 - On 07/08/2009 at 7:24am by roflstephh

They did it so they could get the free labor. They didn't just "not notice".

I had a manager that if you kept asking off days and you didn't work hard he would take you off the schedule and never put you back on.

#27 - On 07/08/2009 at 9:25am by rs_27

Hahh; i love how people call BS because of the law. Because /everyone/ follows every law everyday. :3

#28 - On 07/08/2009 at 9:36am by SusanaSaysRawrxD

Perhaps you changed too many shifts you couldn't work and decided your own fate.

#29 - On 07/08/2009 at 9:39am by BigSky

well.... if your doing your job so badly that no one notices that you're there for a full week, maybe that would explain why you were fired.

#30 - On 07/08/2009 at 9:40am by Lovely_Loser

I bet u will still show up tonite.

#36 - On 07/08/2009 at 10:48am by eli_guerra

That can be real. Same thing happened to me. I only found out when I had to ask why my sign-in card wasnt working

#37 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:17am by kiddo_nin

Proud_Liberal, you are an imbecile. I am ashamed to admit that I am a fellow liberal because of what you just said. Your comment is the biggest pile of rubbish I've heard in about a month. Government bureaucracy isn't nearly as efficient as it could be, because of how difficult it is to fire incompetent employees. I can give you PLENTY of real-world examples if you want, but I think just mentioning USPS is enough for now.

And people can be fired, even if they're in a union. Get your facts straight.

#42 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:59am by cellist1

now, 38 im going to correct you as nicely as I can
*types with growing intensity*
yeah and if there was such a law then everyone would be like "ohh I can't get fired im just not gonna work and go on FML all day"
Ever seen office space?? "people work only hard enough not to get fired, Bob"
and if they couldn't then they wouldn't work at all
and even if that didn't happen for some unrealistic reason, then would you rather a huge corperation go bankrupt and 5 million people lose their job instead of 5,000?
but youre thinking "ohh well, we'll just have the government bail them out so out children and grand children will pay for it" -- ohh no you don't cuz it's their lifes who are f**ked not this OP (no offence OP but in the big picture you'll be fine)
unemployment numbers are not the only basis of how well the econimy is doing
and the government is not "doing so well"
We're in like 11.5 trillion dollars in debt, thats 11,500,000,000,000 (and I rounded DOWN 27 billion dollars) and growing
I already owe $38,000 in taxes because of government spending
go to http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/
and to make you feel even more retarded, Im 15 yrs and have never taken an economics class

good day sir I'm going to eat breakfast now

#43 - On 07/08/2009 at 12:26pm by thabeast

#43 I agree completely, but just want to add that by making it illegal to fire people, companies would have to find ways to pay for employees they couldn't afford (My work just lost 4 employees from maternity leave, 1 from quitting, and one from going back to school and my boss never hired people to replace them as we don't have the money to). The CEOs COULD afford to give up some of their huge bonuses, but they will never agree to that since they're all so selfish =)

#44 - On 07/08/2009 at 12:36pm by XOfiestypixie

Wow, OP's situation is just like Milton Waddams' in Office Space.

Also, #38 is fucktarded and has absolutley no understanding of ecomomics

#41 - On 07/08/2009 at 11:57am by The_Derpinator

shows that your not noticed in life why dont you try doing something different with your life... it doesnt even seem your happy at all workin at a dead end job gosh im bust my ass in school because i will not be workin like a btch and make some jackass fire me hell no!

#45 - On 07/08/2009 at 12:49pm by ithedarkknight

The OP doesn't say they were unaware that they had been fired.

I read this as them turning up anyway, but no one noticed. I was wondering who the fuck would do that!

I realise that the problem was most probably that they hadn't been told. It's just funny the way it's been written.

#47 - On 07/08/2009 at 1:12pm by DecemberC

If they didn't tell you, you weren't fired and they have to pay you for the shifts you worked. They may have meant to tell you sooner, but it doesn't make a difference; it doesn't go into effect until they tell you.

#48 - On 07/08/2009 at 1:21pm by Kristoffer

Agreed with 48. Sucks anyway, but you should still be able to get paid for the time you worked since being "fired" if they failed to tell you. Also, what sort of boss forgets to tell an employee that s/he's fired? Way more company fail than yours...

#51 - On 07/08/2009 at 3:56pm by swagmonkey

I've been at places that schedule shifts in two week increments - and one business does it monthly. (if you want a day off, you have to trade - there are no requests allowed).

Also a time clock doesn't mean that a machine reads your name. At my last place, our timesheets were for two weeks. It wasn't until the manager collected up the time cards, that anyone would have any idea who punched in on which card. Many places still use paper punches rather than employee scan cards

I don't know about the real world, but in the university, students were fired without being informed of it. They'd show up for work asking why they weren't on the schedule. The same happened at a restaurant I worked at (in the case the girl came and saw a line through her name and shifts). Othertimes people were "going to be fired as soon as a replacement was found and trained" and we weren't to tell them until that happened.

#52 - On 07/08/2009 at 4:22pm by cxal

Is your name Chris Yop? I'm just curious.

#53 - On 07/08/2009 at 4:32pm by Dashiell

um interesting and i WOULD call bs BUT
it happened to a friend of mine when the manager fired him but didnt tell him - he didnt get any shifts tho that would be absurd

#54 - On 07/08/2009 at 4:52pm by notlovingit

Did they take your stapler too?

#55 - On 07/08/2009 at 4:58pm by Dragonmouth

If you did major in econ (proud_liberal) you would understand econ. You see, becuase we all rely on a monetary system, we need to have monetary units to continue the system. In layman's terms, you need money to spend money.

Even with a cut back on CEO pay, that is, even if the CEO earned the same amount (or if everyone earned the same amount) he/she would still need money. One reason people are fired is because the company will become bankrupt. If firing people is illegal, we would create a communist system.
Let's travel back in time.

During the reign of Stalin. People were given jobs and recieved pay. They could not be fired. So, people drank on the job and did absolutely NO work. In the end, the communist society collapsed.

What you propose is communism. As an american, I am sure you wouldn't want Communism.

And besides, look at Iran. What has your hero done there?
Personally, I don't look up to government officials. And government has failed us repeatedly, and vice versa. It's not overly fantastic.

I won't change your opinion, and you will probably bite my head off. I just wanted to offer some insight.

#57 - On 07/08/2009 at 7:29pm by Hawkysu

lemme guess Proud liberal you JUST got out of college, right?
little bit of advice...

college isn't like the real world... at all

so youre not going to listen to any common sense, and obviously Hawksyu and I aren't going to change your mind... the only reason I continue this is because I want to try and understand where youre coming from, all these other guys should be aware of the crazies like you and its funny watching you lose this argument.
alright the gov't has no athority to stick it's hands in the private sector
If you really want to cut CEO pay then you should organize a CEO pay cut strike and if you don't do that then its obviously it's not THAT important to you. The CEOs worked their asses off to get where they are and now youre going to try to demonize their success? You should be like " thats where I want to be in 10 years" not "ohh, those greedy bastards got lucky and I hate them "

second if you want to take money from anyone who is "making too much" it should be actors/actresses cuz they get like 20 mill for 6 months of work

and I'll put another hole in your "perfect scocioty (spelled that wrong)" if no one can get fired, then no one can get promoted, what if the OP was slacking off at his job and the company found someone better to replace him??? (not saying that this happened to the OP just saying that this is a main reason people are fired)

1 more metaphore

What if in your Econ class, no one could Fail? What if the Prof. just took points off the highest grades to add to the failing ones? How hard would you work? not hard at all and you wouldn't do anything, this is what you are proposing we do to america and IT WONT WORK

Another liberal Tactic- making generalizations and unorthadox assumpsions aka bush wasn't/ isn't my hero reagan is

now I answered all of your questions will you answer mine? (this post and last post)

or do you know that you are wrong? will you not post again? cuz you are scared of losing what little credibiltiy you have left (spelling not my strong point)

please see the error in your ways and if I wasn't clear in this post or #43 let me know so I can help you understand my points

umm, thats all i got 4 now

: )

#62 - On 07/09/2009 at 12:06am by thabeast

that's why u were fired, standing out is helpful

#58 - On 07/08/2009 at 8:19pm by Squirrellord911

First thing I thought of was Milton.
Also, likely not BS because this stuff does happen. This also sounds like a part time job most likely since there aren't as many full time jobs where you can just get people to cover shifts like this. If it is actually a part time job, then the OP cannot collect unemployment.

#59 - On 07/08/2009 at 10:19pm by luxornv

although this sounds somewhat like office space, this surprisingly happens a lot at retail stores where they have hundred of employees and can't keep track of them, such as Hollister and A&F. I know several people who got the fired card way late.

#60 - On 07/08/2009 at 10:57pm by SuzyQ4u5

Stapler
Stapler
Stapler

#63 - On 07/09/2009 at 2:18am by ivoryXkiss

That's stupid on so many levels.

#64 - On 07/09/2009 at 5:14am by danineteen

From what I see, proud_liberal needs to start paying attention in economics class, and hawkysu needs to look up Stalin, Socialism, Communism, and the difference between the latter two. Thabeast pretty much hit the nail on the head without blaming the current state of our nation on a society that has never actually existed on a widespread scale. At least someone appears to remotely understand the concept of economics.

#65 - On 07/09/2009 at 9:01am by evilpenguinsmoo

I know the difference.

I spent this entire year studying the difference.

I know it wasn't exact... but it's similar.

Jeez, now i'm the one biting people's heads off..

Sorry. I was hungry

#66 - On 07/09/2009 at 6:05pm by Hawkysu

If it's true,
1) You're dumb.
2) You work in a grocery store for pot money.
3) You're barely ever "available" to work a shift.
6) The reason you "didn't know you'd been fired" is because you called in sick your last 3 shifts.
finally;
5) NOT TRUE! dumbass!

#67 - On 07/10/2009 at 12:12am by subierat84

how do you not realize you were fired? make it more believable next time
