Today, I was talking to an art critic at an exhibition. He told me that the artist had no talent and went on to tell me everything wrong with each painting. I'd painted them all. FML

Well in fairness if you got them showcased in an exhibition surely somebody finds your work good! Besides that don't let critics stop you from painting if it makes you happy.

Im sorry..you just gotta choose how to handle what he said, possibly use it as constructive criticism?

Well it is. I feel bad for the guy.

1- you say 'bummer', and it makes me think of .... Oh what's the movie with the Quija board, from the 80's? 'Multiple sadness, dude.'

1,10. You should change you name to double post or re-run.

On a completely unrelated note, 46, your profile picture scares the crap out of me...

What's wrong with posting twice is it a crime?

It's annoying as ****! Just read for goodness sakes! It's not that hard!

Im sorry..you just gotta choose how to handle what he said, possibly use it as constructive criticism?

Constructive criticism is supposed to be a "helpful" form of criticism. What this douche bag did was straight up insult op. Art is unique in that no one can really judge a piece of art since all artists have their own style. Op, **** that dick head. I'm sure you're a wonderful artist. He's probably just jealous.

Seeing as the critic did go on to tell the OP what was wrong with each one, I'd say that OP got some constructive criticism.

Ok ok.... I think Picasso isn't so great. THERE! I said it! I also like the blue dog. That is all.

40 Yes, OP was insulted at first but the critic did tell OP what was wrong afterwards. That's the "constructive criticism" I was talking about.

Not all things labeled "art" should be labeled that way... Nor are all opinions valid. Who's to say OP wasn't a terrible artist?... Who's to say le critic wasn't an asshole?

So you thought being an artist would mean everyone would love your paintings and no one would ever criticize you? You're very wrong

@34, That was what I am thinking. Art is not structured, there is no rules of art. As long as it has (deep) meaning to you and your intended audience (could be you as well), then you did good. People love paintings, sculptures, music that is different because it could relate more to them. Everybody has little quirks, art should as well. So OP, if you think that you did something wrong just because a critic told you that you did, then you do not understand the full meaning of art.

Had to be better than the jesus restoration.

How exactly can art be objectively judged? How is an insightful painting by picasso objectively any better than a todler's picture of a house. To anyone who has been berated for their art, remember: any way to call it "bad", or I suppose good, is sheerly a matter of arbitrary values and oppinions.

Looking back at famous artists, the public didn't like most of their art until years after their deaths, correct? Obviously the only solution is to kill yourself. (Note: this comment contains sarcasm. For everyone incapable of noticing it, here you go.)

Just because you know not everyone's going to like your work doesn't make you immune to the emotions that follow when someone criticizes your entire exhibition.

@58 & 78, then again there are general criterias, as society likes, such and such a thing, and it depends of the movement. But art can be as easy as making a dot in a blank page, but if you work hard on a art piece it can also be rejected. That's why you have to be able to justify and defend your art.

I guess there goes your chance of becoming the next Van Gogh. Shame

No one rated Van Gogh's paintings in his lifetime either. So maybe he's absolutely the next Van Gogh.

True that. Ok Shame op won't be the next Dent

Take it as constructive criticism to make you next painting better :)

Asshole of the year award goes to... Don't worry op! No two artists are the same. That's what makes art great! You do what you do and don't give a **** about what ppl say :)

Sorry OP. Take their criticism with a grain of salt. There's always going to be someone that doesn't like your work. Keep some of that criticism in mind the next time you start a piece. Obviously you have talent. Good luck :)

Hey, everyone has a different eye for things! I'm sure your art is great :)

It's the eye of the beholder. Everyone will have different views upon art whether it's a positive or negative opinion. Don't let it stop you from doing what you love. :')

Don't worry about it. Myself being a musician, I learned that there will always be "haters". The only person that can point out wrong aspects in your paintings is you since art is so subjective. Keep painting for you, not critics.
