I'm right here

Today, after applying for a promotion to a position which I've been working my ass off for two years to get, my managers thought it would be appropriate to discuss other applicants in front of me, even asking me to compare my resume with theirs to see the "caliber" of what I'm up against. FML

Very unprofessional of them. Details of other applicants should really be confidential. Anyway, good luck on getting your new job. However... something unfortunate could happen to the other resumes... >:)

Hopefully you have a kick ass resume..

Actually not. As an existing employee OP has the ability to not only review the applicants but also to interview them! Sometimes a company is legally obligated to consider other applicants. OP you are in a great position. I hope you told them why you are better than these other applicants.

Sounds like they have know intention of promoting OP. The last job my Grandmother applied for she was told that they weren't going to hire her, but wanted to keep her resume to compare against their other applicants.

Be happy that they have an interest in quality employees. Some companies will hire anyone. At least now you know you are being promoted (or not) for your skills and talents related to the job.

42- Those are from all the people who did not compare well to OP.

Not sure if they're trying to help you be better prepared, or if they're just being rude...

It sounds like they're trying to be helpful. I had someone apply for supervisor after a couple of years because he felt he deserved it but he was grossly underqualified. Maybe they were in a similar situation. OP, if your bosses have mentioned any specific qualifications that the other applicants have and you lack, maybe they are trying to avoid having you become bitter if you don't get the job. Ask them if there's something you can do to strengthen your CV.

Maybe your boss is hinting that you need more qualifications/school?

Hopefully you have a kick ass resume..

That's harsh. I hope this still means you get the promotion. Hopefully he's just trying to scare you.

To me, it kinda sounds like they know that you are driven and are trying to push that side of you because they know you will excel. Good luck!!

At least you're a step ahead of the competition! Damn management though >:(

Take that opportunity to improve your resume so it's better then any of the others you have seen

take out a 9mm, and show them what "caliber" they're up against if you don't get that promotion

I would not recommend taking 12's advice unless the job you seek involves making license plates at the local prison.
