Man or woman?

Today, my parents, who are divorced, were arguing over who has to pay for my bus pass. They decided they wouldn't pay unless the other one did too. Neither will pay the £60 it'll cost for my bus pass. I now have to walk to school every day, in freezing winter weather. It's 9 miles. Each way. FML

she clearly meant 9 miles each way, not 9 miles in total

#60 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:02pm by hazaaar

#57:
You're an idiot and you can't spell. OP meant "9 miles each way" as opposed to "9 miles round trip". Had they just said "It's 9 miles," we would've assumed they meant round trip. Now shut up.

#62 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:02pm by Intoxicunt

orrrrrrrr ask your parents to split it so they're both paying half...

#67 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:13pm by youreanidiot

In order to get to class on time OP would have to leave the house three hours before the start of school yes, but that doesn't mean its fake.

#71 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:24pm by boatkicker

"It's 9 miles. Each way. FML"
Now stop bickering ffs

#77 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:32pm by Bud

#52 There are something called decimal points. 4.5 miles + 4.5 miles = 9 miles. Anyway, it was nine miles each way. The period was used for emphasis.

#81 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:35pm by bugmenotmofo

How much is a bus pass in the UK?

#84 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:39pm by w100wdm

Holy shit, just skip school dumb ass. If your parents want to pussy fight over 30 pounds, let them. Then, also let them get their dumb fuck asses thrown in jail for child abuse (making a kid walk 18 miles a day in snow).

Not to sound COMPLETELY ignorant, but why isn't there a school bus? yes, i'm stupid, now tear me to pieces.

#113 - On 11/04/2009 at 8:03pm by the_stereotype

Ok dude ur an idiot. OP didn't probably didn't mean 9 miles each way as in to and from the school. OP's parents are divorced which probably means each way as in each different house. And come on!!! R u that stupid? OP obviously has different scenarios in this FML. Like having to wake up really early and probably still being late for class. And how could OP pay for themself when he or she probably doesn't work and their parents r the only source of money?? Yeah that's wat I thought -.- don't be so negative. They should ride a bike to school :)

#138 - On 11/04/2009 at 11:53pm by CruNKmONKey

Try calling social services and be done with it.

#139 - On 11/04/2009 at 11:56pm by GreenHacker

If you are old enough to put this on fml then you are old enough to ask your parents for it yourself. If there is something that concerns you, it make you a party too.

#140 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:02am by wtfwts

#1,41: What are you, nuts? Do you honestly expect her to pay the $100 herself? You must be joking. Give her a break.

@OP: Sounds like it's time to call social services or whatever passes for that in your country. Your parents are asses and deserve to be treated as such.

#173 - On 11/05/2009 at 4:33am by blastvortex

If it takes you 3 hours to walk 9 miles then you clearly suck. Also one can try running.

#191 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:38pm by Ronan_Adams

Maybe she lives somewhere very isolated and there aren't many people who live nearby and attend the same school? Or for some reason can't attend the nearest school so attends one further away?

#12 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:02pm by blackie123

Yeah, today it was 11 degrees! (That's 52 degrees for you Americans.)

#18 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:07pm by IndieSinger

Yeah, everyone on earth lives in exactly the same place as you... with exactly the same weather. Right

#20 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:10pm by usernamesarehard

Yea... but we're having REALLY bad weather at the moment.

I call fake. In England you get a bus pass for free if you live over three miles away from your school

#21 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:12pm by tikimuppet

@21 - No you don't. If you're out of the school's catchment area, travelling to school, by law, is your responsibility. Bus passes are sometimes reduced or free for people from low-income families but your free bus passes must be a regional council thing. It's certainly not country-wide.

11 degrees? Fuck, I wish. That's beautiful weather, whereever you are.

#55 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:41pm by Envy

#50, I think they mean the difference between celcius and farenheit. You use farenheit in America don't you? Meaning that 11 degrees farenheit would be pretty damn cold, but 11 degrees celcius isn't tooo bad.

get a job and stop whining. if you arent old enough to get hired somewhere, i'm sure you can help out with odd jobs and get the money. 60 isn't that much.

#4 - On 11/04/2009 at 4:53pm by Jordie210

Whether the OP gets a job or walks 18 miles a day this is still a FML. Until you're 18 education and transportation to it is supposed to be someone elses responsibility. The OP could work for food and rent too, it doesn't mean that its not a FML when you have to worry about that shit beffore you're an adult.

#6 - On 11/04/2009 at 4:55pm by Erindub

@#6 In England, people go to secondary school until they're 16 and you can't drive until you're 17.

#9 - On 11/04/2009 at 4:58pm by IndieSinger

Umm... in England we stay in secondary school till were 18. We have the option of leaving at 16, after GCSEs, but most people don't. But they're moving the driving age up to 18 now. FML ;)

#23 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:13pm by usernamesarehard

@#23 - No, you stay at secondary school until you're 16. You then have the option of going to sixth form or college until you're 18. This may be at the same educational establishment or a different one. Many schools don't even HAVE a "post sixteen" facility.

Current Year 8 students will have to stay on until they're 17 and future students will have to stay on until they're 18. However for the time being, the age you finish compulsory schooling is 16.

#35 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:19pm by IndieSinger

Where is this??? In New Zealand you stay in secondary school until you're 18 generally, but have the option of leaving after you turn 16. Id say more people definitely stay right through though, and I havn't heard of any schools in NZ that DON'T let people stay after 16... that seems very strange.

#90 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:52pm by hornetchik

#9, actually, you leave school at 17 now, and when the next primary (elementary) students move up to secondary (high) school, they'll have to stay in formal education until 18.

Wonderful. Dumbing down affecting the globe.

#186 - On 11/05/2009 at 10:48am by Kervik

Get them to go halves?

#13 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:03pm by Lisa89

1) It's snowing some places, so "winter weather" is not an unreasonable thing to say.
2) £60 is over 100 USD. Not necessarily that easy to come by, especially if...
3) OP may be a young kid with limited options.
4) Your parents totally suck.

You could buy a pretty cheap bike and ride to school. And if you don't have the money, shovel snow (if there's snow) or do some silly jobs until you can afford a cheap solution.

#14 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:04pm by ahimsa7

Due that really sucks i know somewhat a feeling like that yes deff make friends who can drive :)
besides i would just ignore your parents what kind of parents are they if they cant even pay 60$ for a bus pass i mean if they actually cared about the situation i know jobs arent easy and odd jobs come on people thats how people get raped and killed by helping people they dont know! fyl

#108 - On 11/04/2009 at 7:29pm by Mx_Rider

Was it really necessary to point out that it's 9 miles *both* ways? I would have thought that would be obvious.

#17 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:06pm by littlegolferboy

Could have been 9 total.

#45 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:25pm by n0lovesongs

That sucks for you, it seems logical that your parents just go halves, no? Also, OP may be under 16, meaning it is impossible to get a job and therefore pay themselves. Even if they aren't, the current economic state makes it near impossible to get a job. And to the person who said 'FAKE' because it's apparently not even winter yet, well today was fricking freezing. Nine miles! Jesus.

#19 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:08pm by w26l32

It's not "impossible" to get a job under 16. You can get a job on the till or cleaning (for example in McDonald's) when you're 14. Or you could get a paper round or something.

#22 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:13pm by IndieSinger

Assuming the poster is in the UK (they used pounds, not dollars) I'm under the impression they have to apply for a working permit in their area if they're under 16 - which takes time and could easily be denied.

Also, the poster could easily be under 13, in which case it's not legal for them to work, but even if they're not, there may have a deadline by when the bus pass needs to be ordered - many districts work that way.

#75 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:30pm by red_orchid

I would like to inform you that 19 did not say that it was "impossible" they said "near impossible." Which I will agree with. Although I've got (very) minimal knowledge of the current economic state of the UK, I do know that they're also in a recession. Which makes getting a job pretty difficult. And its also pretty difficult to get any job when you're a teenager. I have been looking for a job since I was 16. Actively looking. Applying to places (between 2 and 20 places a week), and interviewing on occasion. I am 19 this month. I still don't have a job. I'm going out on a limb here and saying OP is a teenager, so yes, it is probably 'near impossible' for them to find a job.

#76 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:31pm by boatkicker

No, not in the UK. You cannot work in a professional environment until the age of 16, with VERY occasional exceptions which usually breach the law.

#202 - On 11/05/2009 at 6:04pm by w26l32

As she's nine miles away from her school, maybe she's in a very isolated place and there isn't anywhere nearby she could work? It happens. I used to live somewhere there wasn't even a shop for 4 miles.

#205 - On 11/05/2009 at 9:46pm by BonnieJade

what. the trip would magically shorten going home then going to school? is it uphill too? both ways? idiot

#25 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:13pm by Th217

Get some advice from your head teacher or head of year on how to get a free bus pass, on account of the fact that you live more than three miles from school. I'm surprised you haven't had a free bus pass before, actually.

If you're in Sixth Form, you may also be entitled to an Educational Maintenance Allowance. Again talk to your head of year or form tutor.

I don't actually believe this

#26 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:14pm by FozzieGirl

You people have to be daft to believe this.
-In the UK they don't use miles they use KILOMETERS
-Walk 9 miles each way? It would take about 20 minutes to walk one mile. You do not spend 6 additional hours each day walking to school.

#27 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:14pm by smilemonkey

Nope, we use miles.

#34 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:19pm by as260191

Err yeah, we use miles.

#39 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:21pm by drachir

@#27 - Why on earth do you think they use kilometres in England? They definitely don't, they use miles.

#40 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:21pm by IndieSinger

yea..we definatly use miles in the uk

#46 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:27pm by whatwasthatnoise

Haha in my elementary school, we were always pushed to learn the metric system because "America is the only country who doesn't use it." Apparently, they just really wanted us to learn it! I would have assumed the same thing, though. I thought England used Kilometers.

#47 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:27pm by n0lovesongs

You have to walk 9 miles to school?
That's ridiculous, I don't believe that you could have such malicious parents.
Walking at an average pace, that'll take you about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

#28 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:15pm by FernandoTorres

Ah suck it up and pay for it yourself. Or wear warmer clothes. I'm Canadian and that's what I do.

#29 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:15pm by Arietie

That would be over $120 Canadian, which is a LOT of money for a kid in school to pay. Plus even wearing warm clothes can be a hassle since you heat up as you walk, eventually getting too warm for the coat but not warm enough to take it off. Plus walking 9 miles each way? thats about 14.5 km each way. That sucks even in nice weather.

#115 - On 11/04/2009 at 8:14pm by XOfiestypixie

Quit going to school until they cough up a bus pass.

#30 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:16pm by aback

I say protest it...don't go to school till they figure it out amongst themselves.

#32 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:16pm by Erindub

that is fucked up.

#33 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:17pm by powermad80

It sounds to me like you shouldn't have to obey anything they tell you. Why should you listen to 2 people who care more about what someone else does than take care of their responsibility? They sound like children to me, and last time I checked, you don't have to obey to the whims of little bickering children.

No pass ---> No chores, favors, errands, etc.

#36 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:19pm by MamaC

@27 No, they use miles. Not every country in Europe uses kilometres. Don't make points on subjects you know nothing about.

#42 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:23pm by Skull_300

And it's uphill, both ways!

Walking is great exercise and you will get lots of time to think and meditate. And you won't become some out-of-shape fattie that all of the boys hate.

Good on you, mum and pop!

#43 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:25pm by perdix

Um.. no. She said each way. 9+9=18 miles.

#53 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:41pm by sexy_chan

why can't they just split the damn £60 fee 50/50? it took each of their reproductive organs to create you so why wouldn't they go 50/50 with other things? your parents priorities are fucked up.

#48 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:28pm by lrb081

Refuse to go to school until they pay for it.

.. bad idea?

#49 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:30pm by wakawakawaka

instead of blaming and being angry, take control of your situation... offer to pay 1/3 of the bus pass and get a job by offering to do chores or something.

#51 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:40pm by dragonflygal

Harden up kid, when I was your age I had to walk 33 miles to school in blinding blizzards, with no shoes and my family was to poor to afford a jacket so I had to cover myself in leaves and if I didn't walk fast enough and was late I would be whipped and put in solitary confinement.

I gotta be honest... I get really tired of things like "It's 9 miles. Each way." NO DUH! I'd freaking hope that if you have to walk nine miles to get there, you'd have to walk nine miles to get home... otherwise, it would mean you had suddenly shifted location. -headdesk-

#72 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:26pm by pentameter

They meant nine miles both way, as opposed to nine miles total.

#80 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:35pm by boatkicker

yea, they were just clarifying...cause otherwise it might of been asumed to be 9 miles in total..

Either that or you're not familiar with the expression and don't understand #69 was being sarcastic.

#86 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:43pm by la_vie_en_rose

people are retarted. it cannot be uphill both ways unless the ground suddenly shifted while you're at school.

You're exactly right! Now if we could just get you to understand those postings were sarcastic we'll be all set.

Don't you have any male friends with access to a car who could help you out? Ask one to dress super scary then have him over in which he behaves like a prick. Leave with him a few times and stay out late. Tell them that he is your other option to get to school and I bet that bus pass money turns up quick enough.

#87 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:46pm by mercyFML

But the bus pass is for £38 for students and £42 for adults... If u've been paying £60 well YDI anyway...

#92 - On 11/04/2009 at 7:02pm by opeious

This FML is bullshit. Nobody would walk 18 miles a day. Nobody. Not even George Fucking Lopez. How about you smelly vaginas quit arguing over something that isn't even real. I hate Sarah Buckner. And Don't call me tonight.

He might not be in coventry, Im from Bedworth, but not many people have heard of our shitty little town so I say Coventry as it's much easier for someone to place. If it is for him to go to Uni, he's at least 18. which means hes eligible for student grants and the like, and should get a job, and really shouldnt be relying on his parents to get to and from. I suppose we cant really make an assumption until we know how old he is and where he's going etc etc

Then when he arrives, watch the ass pounding he'll have to take. For your mom, steal the car and drive it off the bridge, then walk back home. Don't say anything, even while they're looking for it.

To everyone telling the OP to get to pay it her self and/or to get a job: 1st I don't think she has the money to pay it herself if her parents won't pay her bus pass they are probably not giving her an allowance. 2nd if she was to go ahead and try to get a job (assuming she is old enough) how exactly is she going to get there, the bus? the one she has no bus pass for?

But that's pointless seeing as how this is fake as fuck.

#136 - On 11/04/2009 at 11:32pm by Calaura9

9 miles isn't that far walking distance. Get a job. Buy a bike. And everyone who is saying child services and/or the police should be called are dumbasses. Parents not paying for something expensive and not necessary for their child is not abuse or neglect.

#141 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:05am by AndreaHatesYou1

It seems like this was something the parents paid for before the divorce and are now not paying it just to get at the other. Unfortunately, I've seen this kind of childish, bickering nonsense again and again among my own friends' parents. It's not that out of the ordinary.

this isn't real. you know why? schools have rules about who can go to their school. its called living in the district. i doubt your schools district is within 9 miles or so. maybe 5 miles max. if you drove to school it would take like 30 mins to get there. so i doubt your story. nice try.

#150 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:54am by tigerg33

it could be real, my school is open district so people over an hour away come. it could also be private school. you never know.

#152 - On 11/05/2009 at 1:06am by andreaco

really? i never heard of open district before. schools make more money by charging people more when they live out district. kudos to your school for being so generous :P

#153 - On 11/05/2009 at 1:15am by tigerg33

I am guessing you are from America, as you are using the term district, instead of catchment area. In the UK schools have catchment areas which can span large or small distances depending on where they are and how many other schools there are. My secondary school had a 12 mile catchment area, so there were people that would have had to walk 12 miles if there were no buses.

What is important is that you do not have to live within the catchment area in order to go to a school, you can apply to go to a school which is not local for any number of reasons, and they will decide whether or not you can attend.

People within the catchment area, that live more than 3 miles away are entitled to free bus passes (usually, this varies depending on your council) if you live more than 3 miles away, but not within the catchment area, you will have to pay for a bus pass.

The OP is lucky, in Essex, the bus pass is over £100 for students and children!

#151 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:59am by Dixie_Normous

ok for all those ppl telling her to buy it herself, or to get a job, or that this is fake or whatever....
I am 15 years old. I don't get any pocket money, at all. If I ever get money it's about 20 Australian dollars at Christmas (from my grandma who I hardly ever see), or maybe for my birthday (and that's still a maybe). Now I'm not one to complain; if I ever need money for something, my dad usually gives it to me. But basically, I don't really have my *own* money, I worked a bit last year but then we moved and with family problems and the like (my parents just separated too) things are a bit ... (er, I mean A LOT) ... complicated right now and I have too many things to focus on so a job will have to wait. Being able to relate to the OP, I can understand if the emotional stress of the problems she is going through is getting rather overwhelming, and now her parents are too busy acting like sulky children that they're neglecting their responsibilities. I think the main FML here is that her parents care more about fighting each other than her. Now this may sound fake, but I know how my mum's like and if the OP's parents are anything like my mum... I can imagine two irrational, bitter parents - and this scenario is very, VERY plausible.

Seeing as this issue happened 'today', and her parents fought over it and came to this immature conclusion... I'm guessing they probably don't REALLY mean it - they just got angry. (I'm just guessing, here). They might calm down tomorrow and whichever one is taking care of her surely will not make her walk the 18 miles each day just to defend his/her pride. Otherwise, that is just child abuse. But the fact that they did say this, is enough to make one feel really hurt and left out. They are her parents, after all.

#155 - On 11/05/2009 at 1:17am by OLOtheDemigodess

OLO - that was a poignant and well-written post. When parents go through their own tough times, it's the degree to which they can revert to childish behaviors is astonishing.
Things can be tough now - I'm sorry to hear about your parents' separation - but you've got a good head on your shoulders and will do just fine, without a doubt. Also, FYI - I've proofread the papers of college students who do not write half as well as you do. Way to go!

I could never degrade myself to start typing lyk dis all da tym :P
as a matter of fact, your support means a lot to me seeing as exams are coming up.. and they're scary!! lol
good thing is my mum starting to cooling down... I think... she seems as though she's not as bitter as she was before. I'm still a bit hesitant and nervous around her though >.> I keep worrying she'll just explode at any minute... smoke coming out of her ears and worsening our situation of global warming....
*keeps fingers crossed*

first of all, Americans invented celcius, and the metric system. we just use englsnds backward ass measurement standards as a running joke.

you should be greatfull that we even let you use it, or our Internet for that matter.

also, if she lived in a subterranean compound built in to a hill it could be uphill both ways.

i dont know how it is in coventry but in London, students get free bus passes

#174 - On 11/05/2009 at 6:08am by dj_bassflexx

The op is nine miles away from her school so she probably lives somewhere in the country in a small village. If she is the only child coming from that area then there isnt going to be a free bus and she would have to use the normal service bus into the town where the school is.

I honestly do not think this is fake. Some people who went to school with me could not get a school bus to wher they lived and if they missed the normal buses then it was one hell of a walk for them. Not quite nine miles each way but still a long distance

#175 - On 11/05/2009 at 6:14am by monnanon

First of all, we use miles - not kilometres.
I used to have to travel 13 miles to school, and there was no free bus service/pass. My parents refused to buy a bus pass for me so therefore ended up paying around £40 per WEEK for bus travel to and from school.
Expensive much?!
Noticed how it's usually the American's calling fake on this FML because the majority of them can't be bothered to learn anything about our little country ;)
Oh - and it's near impossible to find a job right now.
I'm 18 and left college with decent A levels, and still I'm only a secretary with an apprentice wage of £100 a week. It still took me 6 months of being unemployed after finishing college to find this god-awful job!
So to all of those saying "find a job - get a paper round" etc;
OP might not even be of working age (which is 14 for a part time job in the UK - and even then you can only work around 8 hours a week) and minimum wage is around £4.something, so you wouldn't even get enough money a week to pay for the bus pass. Oh - and who'd work another 8 hours on the weekend/night, after walking 18 miles a day?! That's just me.

Haha, that's a right little rant :|

#178 - On 11/05/2009 at 7:22am by bbsfdwdw

Now you can tell your future grandkids when you're all old and wrinkled "When I was your age, I had to walk 9 miles, BOTH WAYS, in the drifting snow" and they'll say "Well, we don't give a shit. Now, hurry up and die so we can buy a new dog" and you'll just cry yourself to sleep in your geriatric ward, unloved.

#183 - On 11/05/2009 at 8:32am by Vertoule

11 degrees isn't that bad, for a comparison i have to walk about 2 miles in about 5-0 degrees, in Celcius of course, But still, Man that sucks for you, but hey look at the bright side, after a while you'll get fit and all the chicks will go for you.

and also the bus is free for people living in london if you apply for a oyster card if your under 18 and its only £2 for a travel card im sure somebody could spare that until they get it sorted out

#199 - On 11/05/2009 at 4:37pm by ihate_those_days

I used to get the bus to work every morning and that's about £40 a week from where I live (the middle of nowhere). It was about 15 miles, and I didn't qualify for a bus pass :/
And it's the same for school as well. My school was 12 miles away and my parents wouldn't get a bus pass for me or my brother. So we had to pay a load for our own bus fare.
Just cause that's what the prices are in London doesn't mean it's the same everywhere else

#209 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:23am by cartoonelvis

@ capeicaz - actually smarty pants, France was the first country to officially adopt the metric system. they got the information they needed for it from England. it was from a guy you may have heard of - Benjamin Franklin. I dont know if you're up on your history, but is pretty much the original American. he may not be responsible for the original idea, but he is responsible for it's application. since he denounced his English heritage and became American, that makes +1 for America and 0 for you.

#210 - On 11/06/2009 at 3:45am by MaddogTotten

Wow, from where did you get that info? The redneck's manual?
France was indeed the first country to adopt the metric system. However, the people that promoted this idea - Gabriel Mouton (French), Jean Picard (French) and Gottfried Leibniz (German) - had NOTHING to do with the US or Benjamin Franklin.
Btw, France adopted the metric system in 1791...... Should I remind you that the American Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and that, before that, there was no United States of America to speak of?
One more thing: most Benjamin Franklin discoveries/inventions are related to electricity. How could he have given the information France needed to adopt the metric system?

#213 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:23am by shalizzz

I can't believe Benjamin Franklin has found his way into this FML.
wow!!

(no offense intended)

#226 - On 11/08/2009 at 4:38am by OLOtheDemigodess

if you think that most of Benjamin Franklins work involved electricity then you don't know much about him. I site my source as wikipedia (if major news corporations can then so can I)

and the basis of the metric system has been around since the dark ages, those are just people who have worked on the standards it uses. not to mention that the first modern publishing of the system was from a Finnish man, who you didn't mention.

#218 - On 11/06/2009 at 1:44pm by skinnyfatkid736

1. I did not say that the people whose names I've mentioned were the inventors - the verb I used was "promoted". Of course that the basis of this system had been around long before and it took centuries for it to be perfected and to become cohesive (a sine qua non condition for any system). However, I am glad that it was you who stated that the information had been around since "the Dark Ages" .The US started to form at the ending of that period, so it is quite impossible for any American to have had anything to do with the development of the metric system - it just seems hard to believe that anyone who is part of a nation that is trying to evolve and to obtain its independence gives a s*** about helping out with a project that would only benefit another country.

2. I did not say that most of Benjamin Franklin's work was about electricity - I did, however, say that his discoveries and inventions are mostly related to electricity. I do know that he was a politician, a diplomat and so on, but I did not mention anything about these activities simply because I considered them irrelevant in a discussion about physics. What I was trying to say is that most of his research (scientific research!!!) revolved around electricity - whereas the metric system is used for measurements in other branches of physics (such as mechanics or thermodynamics). Therefore, I believe that the French politicians of the time would have probably asked for the opinions of scientists who specialized in those particular branches of physics.

3. The fact that you are using wikipedia as a reference is a clear indicator of your shallow knowledge of the subject so it's obviously pointless for me to carry on with this debate.

P.S. The verb is "cite", not "site" and when using the genitive you are supposed to put an apostrophe between the noun and the "s". Dude, if someone like me, for whom English is not the first language, can spot 2 grammar errors in 2 paragraphs of yours ..............:o :o :o

Dude you own. Kudos for this not even being your first language, you sound like you have a degree in english

Maybe they're not arguing about money, but actually just playing a mean trick on you. They don't care about the money, they're using it as an excuse to make you walk 18 miles a day, (don't you people walk kilometers anyway?) because they hate you. You're probably the reason they got divorced.

no we don't use kilometres - as about twenty people have already stated
learn to read.

You forgot the part where it's uphill both ways.

But really, pay for your own bus pass or you know, buy a bike and quit complaining.

Steal the dough. They deserve that if they're making you piggy in the middle.

Right, i'm english. Firstly it takes me 15 minutes to walk one mile and if it takes you much more than that your fat, end of. Second, secondary school goes until your 16 here and the OP is in secondary school so most likly 14 or 15 and since you legaly can't get a job until 16 unless its a paper round or something which averagly pays a max of £15 a week, if that, and as i had to buy my buss pass every month that wouldn't be enough for her to manage. Third it is snowing here, it does up north all year round and the south most of it. Fourth who cares if it's nine miles here or there or whatever, she clearly means one way not round trip, and even if she didn't the grammer and English used isn't what we are supposed to be talkig about. Fifth my school didn't have an option for a free bus pass, not all do, only the good ones, and it certainly didn't have the funds to give me money, it was basicaly tough luck that i lived 15 miles away, except that i could afford my pass, i'd imagine it's the same for her as she wouldn't willingly walk 9 miles in the cold.

I rekon it's real, and i rekon it's a bitch to live with. i wouldn't cut class because of what it would do to your grades, but i would definitly complain about your parents, if a slap and shouting sesion doesn't work. They need to sort there F***ing lives out. FYL

On the bright side, just strategically add the word "uphill" and you have a story to tell your grandkids.

I don't know why you pay £60, my girlfriend lives in Birmingham and hers is like £45 or something like that. Does Coventry not use Travel West Midlands?

#235 - On 11/13/2009 at 7:30pm by samisaBEAR

My bus pass costs £55 GBP a month for college, so I can totally believe the £60. It's barely in my budget as it is and I have a job too. In Sheffield, where I am, 16-18s have a 40 pence bus pass, but when I started my third year at college, I have to pay for a "full time work/educational" pass. OP, if you are under eighteen, it would be good to look into the travel pass options available to you. If you are in a low income situation, some city councils offer free travel passes to education-goers.

OP also needs to contact their forum tutor/head teacher or who ever they can at the school. The parents are being jerks and someone working at the school will most definately be able to help you sort it out financially, or at the very least talk to your parents.

As for the metric vs. imperial thing goes - in the UK, we use miles in general as a unit for measuring distance, but for smaller measurments we are taught to use centimetres and metres, grams, kilograms etc. but also to be able to convert these measurments to inches, feet, yards etc. I rarely see the term 'kilometres' used outside of car theory tests.

Also, driving age is seventeen, which they are hiring. We do not have drivers ed in school. Driving is not a given and is a very expensive process costing around £20 GBP per hour lesson, so I doubt 'take their car' is an option. Of my adult friends, it's maybe 1 in 4 are drivers. Most people don't bother while still in your teens because insurance can be £1000 GBP plus.

I wish these idiots posting retarded comments would be a little more knowledgable before they respond. I thought the '9 miles, both ways' was perfectly acceptable to describe a 18-mile-all-round trip. =/

ydi for using too many fucking periods noob

#237 - On 11/15/2009 at 12:34pm by Brouhaha

for all those people yelling at the OP to get a job.. have you tried to get one recently?! It's bloody difficult, and she would only get the minimum wage, which makes trying to make £60 (which is VERY expensive for a bus pass) a month near enough impossible.
But, in any case, I think this is either greatly exaggerated or, if the parents argued about this 'today', the the OP doesn't actually have to walk 18 miles round trip, it was just said as a solution in the heat of the moment. I'm sure they wouldn't make her walk 18 miles, because it would take about 12 hours.

Don't you have $60? idk how much 60£ is but.... it doesn't sound that much

#241 - On 01/25/2010 at 6:47pm by mmmazingmary

241, Go learn something about the world instead of just guessing around with completely wrong answers. £60 is equal to roughly $90. Same number + different money system = NOT THE SAME AMOUNT
