Even if you were only staying with an acquaintance and paying him rent directly, how did you not notice that they weren't there and that they took their stuff with them? Plus, most apartment places will send you information about resigning a new lease with them before your current one expires; usually the month before expiration. If it's also YOUR lease for YOUR apartment ("Our lease" implies you signed it too), how do you not know when it ends? Even if you were just paying the person you were living with, I'm sure he told you when the lease was up...and that would definetly be something to remember.
It had to be obvious your roommate was no longer living there, due to lack of belongings as well as physical presence. It's also something you would think would be mentioned in casual conversation..."hey man, where you gonna live once our lease is up next week?"...

(0)Regardless of why you were out in the rain, it was your fault because a landlord doesn't have the legal right to physically remove you from the residence unless there have been legal proceedings and, usually, an officer to escort you out. If you left on your own, well, sucks to be uninformed.
As bad as that may be for a landlord who wants his property vacated, there are laws that prevent him from throwing you into the street.
