Translation: That was not very professional for her to say that. I am sorry.
What the hell? How does she deserve it? If Russian isn't her first language, it probably takes her longer to translate in her head. And its annoying people claiming "First" all the time... it's retarded.
Don't even pretend you speak Russian! Shame on you, using an online translator!

helloxrina, this is what you were trying to say, only with proper syntax:
Это было не очень профессионально с её стороны. Я сожалею.
Translation: read helloxrina's...
To the rude Russians on FML: Вы ребятки очень дружные, я конечно понимаю. Но всё же, постарайтесь себя вести немного более адекватно, особенно со своими. Было бы здорово.
А кто себя ведет не адекватно? Я бы не сказала, что кто то сказал что то особенно "rude". Я конечно не совсем поняла что ghadir пытался сказать, но может быть это таковы мои знания русского языка?
#51 - On 07/10/2009 at 3:34pm by twist_n_shout

Goddamnit people, speak English!
#68 - On 07/10/2009 at 4:37pm by hawkmadinejad

I have never said YDI in this site but I start now.
Who in the world would study abroad in Russia? Of all the warm places like France, England, Switzerland, Brazil,Dubai, Germany and such who would choose Russia???? Its cold there and the few Russians I know are complete assholes and you might take a hint that the country reflects their people. The OP should have researched what countries are friendly to begin with.
Google translator didn't even know what to do with this shit - it churned out a bunch of gibberish where at least one word didn't correlate to anything at all. Can't we all be the Anglo-centric assholes we know ourselves to be and speak English?
Geist, you are a moron. End of story.
#94 - On 07/10/2009 at 7:23pm by twist_n_shout
By popular demand, I'll reply in English (guys, long story short, we were at length and without point discussing the poor syntax of the first comment you see in Cyrillic, and the issue of politeness).
hawkmadinejad, I don't condone rude behaviour at all, nor do I believe that people should engage in it selectively. I just notice a trend among Russians that they are more often than not courteous and measured with everyone but other Russians. Camaraderie exists more so in many other cultures (excluding Russian when people of the same culture meet one another – as if by default. That’s why I said, let’s behave ourselves adequately, especially with one another. I never said “let’s behave adequately only with one another.” In fact, I’d rather not have anyone bicker or quarrel at all.
Hopefully that clears some fog.
zdorovo. russkoe sobranie .hahaha.
to the poster, sorry you had to go through that :D

Geist, it's idiots like you who make Russia look bad because you don't know shit about the weather there. You've seen your stupid movies that show Russia covered with snow and you assume that's all there is to the country.
#110 - On 07/10/2009 at 11:46pm by capricaz
i know goddamn speak ENGLISH
lololol
sif there's so many of you guys that can speak russian ==
You speak for yourself you Anglo-centric asshole.
Russia is full of fascinating cultural history, plus I think the fact that she spoke Russian might have influence that decision a little.
HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!! Bolshoye spasibo za vash rozgovor. Ya sam v shtatax i ploho pishu po Ruskie, no horosho govoriu slavabogu. :)
In Soviet Russia, you don't lose keys. KEYS LOSE YOU!

lol, perfect response
@ OP: you should have called her out on it and got her fired or something
Doesn't work that way, but one can dream. OP better hold her head higher and not let this get to her. Russia is wonderful, but you get little gems here and there, like the lady in the office.
They have really nice staff there. -.-
#4 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:15pm by Stephai
Sometimes the truth hurts LOL I'm jk but tell her to kiss your ugly ass bc it's prob better looking than her face!
XD aw man, i'm sorry! i really wanna just slap people like that. >.>
#8 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:21pm by Raaar
Same here. That was incredibly rude of her. But don't let one stupid girls opinion of you, get you down. Because its very apparent that shes REALLY ugly on the inside.
YDI for going to Russia, and for being ugly...
exactly my thoughts andrewms
you should of said " the ugly girl can hear you" in Russian to her
#13 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:28pm by WFMS
yes, then she would've been posting on here instead of you and she would've gotten lots of YDI votes.
#25 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:47pm by 1381
YDI, grow up and stop crying
What makes you think she was crying?
Shes probably just pissed that her vibrator broke and is taking it out on everyone around her. Send her a dildo with a note saying "Go green"
hahhahahahahahaahahahaahaha
omg, that is the funniest thing I've read on here
If it makes you feel better I've never seen a good looking old Russian lady.
You have, but you probably didn't register her as "Russian" in your head at the time. Russians are usually split between extremes regardless of age or sex: either drop dead gorgeous, or drop dead to save your eyes the agony. The majority being in the former category, however. ;)
something which you have found in all your studies of Russian beauty or lack of it.
Lol FYL. On an unrelated note, I've noticed that ads on FML pages seem to correspond to the FML. I'm looking at one right now that says, "Find your Russian beauty today!" It's good for a laugh.
Say back to her in Russian : "We have a bitchy office lady . Fix it ." :)
Whoah a Russian chickl called you ugly? Burn.
Haha, I'm sorry. I'm Russian, so here's a response I'd say to that bitch: Ya ponimayu shto t' govorish, suka. Chyert s toboy.
(In English: I understand what you're saying, bitch. Damn you.)
#22 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:43pm by awdorable
Dont worry, we use the word ugly incessantly here in Russia but that doesn't mean you are ugly, often we use it to describe a person who is in a bad situation. so Ugly girl may imply to a girl who is in a bad situation.
Exactly what I was going to say.
I was just going to say. That's just the way Russians talk, showing off negative emotions more than positive ones. But that doesn't mean the person is actually ugly.
I believe it was offensive not because it necessary meant 'ugly' but because the girl got offended by the receptionist for loosing her keys -- that's highly unprofessional, regardless of what the word itself means, since it's a negative one.
#70 - On 07/10/2009 at 4:40pm by hawkmadinejad
Again, it's NOT unprofessional in Russia. Besides, ask how much a receptionist in a dorm gains in a month - no one would care to be "professional" for that.
I have noticed that most, if not all, Russians I've met are very rude and lacks any form of sophistication.
u live in new york where most of the rrude russians are but in russia and other parts of the world russians are very nice people ...once you get to know them
just like russians think that americans are rude and innappropriate ...dont hate just because you havent found a russian person thats nice to you
ps i'm russian and i am quite sophisticated for my young age
so please dont make generalizations about other people and cultures if you arent in that culture or have had close relations withh them
k thanx bye
anyone who ends a message with "k thanx bye" obviously isn't that sophisticated, you actually kind of sound stupid.
way to prove their point that russians are rude and generally whiny people.
lizzippi's reply wasnt rude at all if that's who you're referring to...
i think lizzippi meant the last line as thanks for reading..i don't see it as rude, it's just she saying thanks, and bye because she might not come back and read your posts.
i hate this russian guy i know from highschool, he was just so rude but i also have a best friend who is russian. i love her very much because she is very supportive and she's always there for me when i need someone to talk to. so please do not say negative things about this culture or anyone's culture unless you've formed close relationships with them. :)
Leave our sophisticated young friend alone.
k thanx bye
just because I wrote k thanks bye ...doesnt mean anything
1. I was running late and I didnt know how to end it politely so i thought this would be the best way to end it
2. I'm 15 for crying out loud (I am like every teenager texting and talking sometimes in chat speak)
3. I am a regular ticket holder (I buy these tickets with my own money) at the opera and i got to 5 ballets (min) a year(this shows I'm sophisticated on top of this I do tons of charity work and read good literature and actively participate in the community)
4. I am proud of my culture and don't want people to say mean things about it ( as well as about other cultures)
5. in my reply I was never rude or whiny, I just dont like people making generalizations about sometthing that they might not know well about
thank you PTERONOPHOBIA and dragon.
and of course there are Russians that are rude and mean and whiny but every culture has a group of people that are just like dragon said there are some that are very rude and some that are quite polite and likeable.
so please don't make genaralization
thank you for reading!

wow y is everyone preteding to speak russian wow thats not very nice of her to say that
#26 - On 07/10/2009 at 2:48pm by tina_xox
That's a cool way to use language^
What an unprofessional bitch.
What a BITCH! You should get her ass fired!
EFFF HER! That's so mean...
I'm a large North American living in Beijing for work. Very often the assumption is that I don't speak Mandarin 不 对 (not correct)
So I love it whenever someone snickers "tai peng" (very fat) when referring to me.
After they've dug a sufficient enough hole I calmly say "wow and to think some ignorant people back home told me to expect rudeness and uneducated behavior from some people in China, clearly they were not talking about you."
In Asian culture this strips away all "face" and gives me an advantage in the relationship going forward. Try to find the Russian equivalent.
And finally, comfort yourself with what many have already pointed out - Russian women don't age well!!
This comment has been moderated.
Don't worry about it... that woman in the office is just pissed off because she is stuck working in an apartment office in RUSSIA. She can't even dream of working in an apartment office in another country. FHL.
I hate to break it to you, but not everyone dreams of living in America. She is probably quite content living in Russia and doesn't dream of being elsewhere because she really has no desire to live in a different country.
#54 - On 07/10/2009 at 3:42pm by twist_n_shout
Apparently, everyone has to dream of living in the worst and terriblest bullshit filled country.
NO.
I, as a Slav living in the USA, I would RATHER be living in Russia right now...
I HATE IT IN AMERICA! When I turn 18 I am going to go live in Russia. Why? Because it's like an awesome country. :D

So true.
#145 - On 07/21/2009 at 4:20pm by SuperNowa
Hi there, OP, I'm Russian. That woman is a bitch, but she didn't mention your appearance, I'm sure. "Ugly" is often used as a swearword. That woman could call you, for example, "fool" (дура) instead.
OP really needs to keep studying, but probably not in Russia, as she has enough trouble with English.
Someone speaking fast doesn't effect your hearing, it effects your comprehension.
She used 'she' for the office lady before identifying her; a pronoun w/o antecedent .
Someone assuming you don't speak their language can be an advantage, don't screw it up.
Big girls don't cry.
With all of this big talk about grammar and the English language, I was surprised to see that you used the noun 'effect' where the verb 'affect' ought to be.
Hey, how long you've been studying? Not long, I believe if you are surprised. People here called her unprofessional - well, they don't understand Russians. That would be "unprofessional" in Europe or America, but it's quite common in Russia. You were not strictly told off? No one yelled at you? Feel lucky.:) She might be a good woman actually, we are just not used to hide our emotions and being polite with someone who lost his key to a dorm is not generally considered necessarily.
Too long to explain actually, and no foreigher will understand anyway.
But most important - as was already noticed above - she most certainly didn't mean anything about how you look. What did she say - urodina? That just refered to the fact that you lost your key, nothing more. Russian words often have nothing in common with their translation.
Agree 100%. That is not unprofessional in Russia, and noone is going to fire that girl.
that sucks......... :( hope u dnt loose ur keys again.....
#47 - On 07/10/2009 at 3:31pm by bb1_00
was the word she used "ooroda"? thats the only one i can really think of since "nekrasivaya" wouldnt really fit the situation. anyways, doesnt necessarily mean ugly, well literally it does, but anyways. im trying to piece together the sentence based on your translation, what i have is "toot ooroda shas rasplatchitsa, priydee pomagee" is that right? if so, shes basically just showing her displeasure with the situation and not really calling you ugly, or even saying that you are about to cry. translating literally from russian to english will often get you into trouble, but that is what you are there to learn. either way though, it was unprofessional of her, but seriously, being called ugly (not really) by some receptionist is FML worthy for you?
Are you sure she would say урода, i think she would use уродина, even so saying this word also seems awkward, just because it has so many syllables, it makes it hard for me to believe that she used a word that means ugly but rather something else.
yes, it is urodina, but it is not that difficult a word. It may be difficult for a non-russian speaking person, but its an easy word for a russian
the fact that it has many syllables doesn't make it a difficult word, after all the syllables aren't hard to pronounce. i think it is just an awkward word.
Let's get to the nitty gritty here, is this an FML because the desk jockey was talking about you behind your back, but to your face - or is it because you are fugly and the clerk called you on it?
way to show off your online translator skills.
you are pathetic...
Reporting her won't help, as her supervisors would probably be even more rude, since they are in a higher-ranking job position that the receptionist. No one actually cares about employees being polite to clients..
Western social norms are not really accepted in most of post-Soviet countries. I am from Azerbaijan, and I speak fluent Russian, but when in Russia I often get racist remarks (such as "Hey blackass, can you even speak proper Russian?) from random people on the streets because they generalize me with some other people who happen to have the same skin tone I do. In Western countries you go to jail for that, over here it's kind of okay... Racism? Who cares -- that's basically the attitude.
#63 - On 07/10/2009 at 4:28pm by hawkmadinejad
oorodka is most likely but theyre all just diminitive from ooroda
I understand English and German and have been in such situations in Europe myself.
I have also heard tourists from my country (Russia) talking laudly and rudly about everyone around on the street or in the cafe in London or Vien and thinking that no one hears. And I felt shame for them.
I think it is a common sin. To many people think that they are really clever and would not get cought.
Bitch slap that bitch haha FYL
Actually, OP, in Russia, dorm room keys lose you.
that is sucks, it happened to my Japanese American friend haha, my parents were the ones that supose she did know the Japanese.
You "really need" the job? You've only been laid off a month. Try six months. Or try never being able to get a job in the first place.
I would've said "don't call me ugly" in fluent Russian. that would have been enough to make her feel embarassed
I am pretty sure she said "strannaya"(strange) not "strashnaya"(ugly) they sound simular..
i don't think she would say "yrodlivaya"(ugly) or "nekrasivaya"(not pretty) it just doesn't make sense...
it would sound just kinda weird in russian at least.
That's what you get for being ugly. YDI
#84 - On 07/10/2009 at 6:14pm by mkivsuptt
The same thing has happened to me a couple of times in Germany. My family is from there so I speak fluently, but when I first get there I have to adjust to how fast they speak. They assume I don't speak German and insult me...next time feel free to tear them a new ass hole, they probably wont do it to anyone again.
But putting this bitch behind the counter in her place isn't going to change the fact that OP is ugly. OP should go ahead and focus her efforts on a makeover, that'll show that desk whore!
we're supposed to believe what, you asked her for the key in english? clearly if you asked in russian she would know you spoke russian. idiot.
russian is cool looking when written
and one of the most beautiful languages when spoken.
that and urdu. :]
THAT'S when you say, "The ugly girl can hear you." in Russian. ;)
eto ne ochen' nice, no vsetaki ne znau, ya by nebyla porzhena
im Russian living in America and I'm an asshole... lets review why.
Since American chick's love my accent im always getting hit on, me opening my mouth is enough to get a girl wet. Considering the fact that most hot girls like guys who are assholes i began acting and dressing like a total douche. Now im going out with our highschool's prom queen.... life is good when your a russian asshole :)
#102 - On 07/10/2009 at 9:50pm by gnomester
hahahaha, life is good because you're dating a prom queen? High schoolers are so cute. You do realize that when you get closer to the real world or even college you're going to be one in a sea of douchebags. Enjoy it while it lasts, no one cares about that shit.

I would've said something back to her in Russian.
so many russians on this site is niiiice
# 85 u are pretty funny, i just got it lol!!! wish u wrote it in better russian ; )
I hope every single one of you creeps who said "you deserve it for being ugly" consider that you WILL get old someday. And people will consider you ugly.
While that might be true, how do you know the OP is not 18?
If you are ugly at 18, then you will be D-Double Ugly at 50.
I was assuming the OP is young, since she is a student. And she probably isn't ugly, either. And you're a dick. But you will get old.
You did not know until today that you were ugly?
No one gets fired in Russia. You get shot, or have plutonium sprayed on your salad.
Well, that comment really is a bit too far fetched, despite what I said below.
Dear FML readers,
I'm totally sorry for the Russian posters above who just come and start telling everyone to f*** off. In their own language and for no reason at all. "Ну ты и чурбан не русский" is, of course, the best way to show how well bred you are, isn't it, twist_n_shout? baby_love (#56) is correct. I'm glad I don't live there any longer, shame I'll have to return for holidays.
OP: FYL.
A Russian
I fail to see how what I said is at all the same as "telling everyone to f*** off", but I am so glad that you are SO well-bred that you feel you may take upon yourself the task of apologizing for the rest of us! You are so superior to the rest of us in your condescending ways and your lack of desire to ever live in Russia again. The expression I used is a quite commonly used Russian expression, which expresses that what someone said sounds really awkward, be it a slip of the tongue or an actual mistake, equalling in strength to "ну ты и чудак!" or, for the lack of a better English equivalent, "how ridiculous is that!" In no way is it very harsh, but maybe somewhat sarcastic. Oh and just so you know, "well-bred" usually refers to someone's physical description. The phrase you are looking for is "well brought up".
#122 - On 07/11/2009 at 2:01am by twist_n_shout
FHL for being an unnecessary douchebag. That's not the first time I've heard of that happening though. Friend of mine went to get her nails done with a Korean friend of hers and they bad-mouthed her for being fat without realizing her friend spoke Korean. Girl's not even fat.
People are so uppity about their culture these days. I hope you told her off in Russian.
YDI for caring about Russia.
It's funny when people think you can't speak a language, when in reality you can, and try to insult you with it...
I hope after she got off the phone with her, you said something bitchy back to her in Russian.
;]
You are considered ugly in russia? You must be nasty
Oh, man, this reminds me of being in a Vietnamese hair salon. My sister was getting her hair cut and throughout the whole time, they were commenting on how awful her hair was. She finally said, "I can speak Vietnamese." They continued talking anyway.
Oh wow, that's a lot of Russian at the top of these comments...
OP, that's pretty rude of the woman to say such a thing. :(
#129, they kept talking about her, seriously? How rude! Reminds me of that Seinfield episode where the girl (always forget her name) gets someone who speaks Vietnamese to come with her to the salon and find out what they're saying about her... wish I could do that sometimes!
I am from Russia and it really hurts to read all these mean comments about Russians. there are good people in every country and sadly enough there are assholes too.
I totally agree! The main point of the post wasn't that it happened in Russia, but that someone was saying things about the OP in a language they thought she wouldn't understand! There are plenty of FMLs about someone overhearring someone else saying mean things about them in English, but it definitely doesn't reflect in any way on the offender's country of origin, so I don't understand why some are jumping all over this solely for the reason that it happened in Russia!
#136 - On 07/13/2009 at 12:20pm by twist_n_shout
you should have said something to her in russian about what she just did & watch her feel terrible
YDI for going to russia for exchange!
Stop being racist against Russians! Damn. Russia is not some kind of land for evil hideous people. It is a country, like any other, and you have no right to act like your nationality is somehow better. Every country has good and bad people. How about instead of shaming your own country by insulting Russia, you make your country look good by avoiding the racist remarks? Thanks.
It has been said many times in the comments to this FML that this is not considered unprofessional in Russia, and several Russians have told the OP to "ignore being called ugly because it's not really like she meant you are ugly" or whatever. It is socially acceptable to say these derogatory words, it has nothing to do with racism (racism is discrimination on the basis of race, FYI), we are talking about mentality here.
#138 - On 07/13/2009 at 5:11pm by hawkmadinejad
Ugh, does every fml have to turn into a serious debate about racism or something...sigh...but to be honest, how many fmls have there been that basically said "somebody thinks im ugly, fml".
hey everyone saying shit about Russia/Russians
Ughh, i'm so jealous i want to study in Russia
i just have a passion for the country and the language
i envy you
are you native russian? you might have misenterpreted what she said, and while there is probably no doubt that it was something negative , it is possible that she wasnt referring to your appearance. Either way, teachers and school staff get payed like crap in russia, maybe she was taking it out needlessly on you :/ or maybe its just because she identified you as a "western" foreigner. f.x. she could be saying:
"тут одна дура потеряла ключи, и вот вот заплачет. Реши проблему пожалуйста"
I would jump that bitch. Similar situations used to happen at the restaurant I used to work at. My managers would assume the mostly Hispanic busers didn't speak English, so they would say terrible things about them right in front of them and the result? They stopped doing their jobs.
that lady should be fired. what a bitch.
#148 - On 07/28/2009 at 3:08pm by iloveconcerts
It's mean, I know. But the way she says it sounds kind of adorable. XD I have issues. And I think it's cause she doesn't know what to do. You don't deserve it :/
#149 - On 09/08/2009 at 4:44pm by fmylife_hardcore
"She spoke really fast so I couldn't hear her" ?
No, what happened was; she spoke Russian at a NORMAL pace and you couldn't UNDERSTAND her. Sorry, but YDI for not knowing the language well enough yet. It's only expected that if you can't understand/speak very well the language of the country you live in, then you will be talked about. As if this happens more in Russia than other countries. Yeah right. Sorry. Learn Russian.
