Ans THAT'S why you should save every 2 seconds... No but that really sucks...
A new version of the dog ate my homework, cool :D Still sucks though!
YDI for not saving at the beginning but that sucks so FYL
ha you should of saved it :... that sucks though like majorly.
im gonna use that excuse next time i have a big paper due :)
#4 - On 05/25/2009 at 5:40pm by xo3velyn
YDI for having an itchy dog.
so yeah, that sucks...but I guess in the future you'll be more careful about saving, hmm? Kind of dumb on your part not to.
Awww fuck =/
I had a powercut when I was doing an essay one time
Even if your computer gets shut down, it automatically backs it up on the system...reopen the program and it's there... FYL for not knowing that
i'm pretty sure it autosaves lol.
#12 - On 05/25/2009 at 5:44pm by tianshi
Sucks for sure!
But when you've experienced it one time, you'll learn that you have to save every 1 minute..
It's a great habit to have.
Agree with #11 and #12. Autosave. And how does a dog hit a power button? They're not beveled. You have to literally take you finger and stick it in there... whoa, inadvertently made a sexual innuendo.
Start rewriting it now rather than posting your sob story here.
#11 - Not all programs have autosave
#14 - Not all power buttons are beveled? It isn't like ALL power button are the same! Wtf are you thinking? There isn't one generic computer design. Also, random shit happens I am sure that a dog can press a power button.
YDI. You have to learn to save very often. Especially when it is such an important paper.
hahahh #5 just made my day!!!
That's why you compulsively press control S every 5 seconds. In fact, if you were using Windows it would ask you if you wanted to restart, so YDI even more for using a Mac.
YDI, you should set it to auto-save every couple of minutes.
But that does suck.
#20 - On 05/25/2009 at 5:47pm by burrito_supreme
Yeah...it should autosave. Just reopen your word processor. It may not all be there, but at least there will be something. I wish the same applied to Final Cut Pro :/
This comment has been moderated.
Its possible to set word up so it auto-saves.... noob! YDI
And wait, doesn't windows (I know macs for sure do) ask you to save your work before shutting off?
#19 - you sound like a complete douche. when you press the power button on a mac it asks you what you want to do unless you turn that option off (you can turn it off on Windows also). Also, don't think that the only operating systems are Mac OS X and some form of Windows. ever heard of Linux or many others?
#11: something like this happened to me, and nothing of my document was saved..
Apparently its an option you need to change, or something?
u can deffinately get that back... but if u can.. THAT SUCKS... i would want to die.
YDI, learn to save
FYL, because it's your last grade
aahh that sucks in the worst way- I remember that happened to me one time, then I got super-paranoid about losing my work. It happens, I hope your new one is going to be better than your last. all the best!
YDI for not saving every now and then.
#19 - who said they were using a Mac? i use one. hitting the power button doesn't make it turn off either.
Wow, it could be the power button for a power strip, which is quite easy for anyone to hit, is not beveled and instantly turns off all devices connected to said strip without asking you if you want to. My username is, and always will be, correct.
YDI for not saving, retard.
Sucks for you. I save it every-so often to prevent that from happening.
As a recent college graduate who wrote many, many papers over the past 4.5 years, while I do feel some sympathy toward your situation, this is still a YDI.
I mean as it is, Word 2003 does (or is at least supposed to) autosave your paper every like 10 or 20 minutes or something, so it should be recoverable...but even if it doesn't, if you're writing a very large paper, you should be saving every few pages or so, just in case.
You poor bastard, but in the end, it's your own fault.
Auto-save. Learn to love it.
That's why you save your work after every sentence or two you type. It's become a reflex for me. It sucks, but shit happens.
#40 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:02pm by milkradio
Why would anyone design a computer to shut down at a touch? Usually you have to hold them down for 5-10 seconds don't you? To keep exactly that from happening? I'd say anyone who designs that kind of power button should probably not be working with computers... If its a switch then maybe... but if computers even still have those they're usually hidden in the back aren't they?
sucks so much! But you should save it every few sentences or so.
Always ALWAYS save as soon as you start the word project- I think every student has suffered the misfortune of losing a paper that was not saved.
Wow, and just like that your computer turned off? I thought you usually had to hold down the button for a couple of seconds.
That sucks but you deserved it. I'm sure you've heard this same story numerous times. Maybe you should save every once in a while next time.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH I hate that so much! I feel your pain. D:
#45 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:08pm by Niqi
You should've been saving as you went along. But still, sucks for you.
i'm finding this one hard to believe..
but if it's true, you should definitely learn to save things like every 2 minutes.
#47 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:09pm by betwixt
YDI for not saving. But FYL cause that sucks.
@#44: When I hit my computer's power button it restarts. So does my mom's laptop and my aunt's computer.
#48 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:09pm by AuriPantz
I'm pretty sure you learned your lesson.
Don't have your dog in the room when on the computer.
And save every minute of something.
#49 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:09pm by AliciaContreras
lmfao #6.
but yeah, save every two seconds! and its weird that your auto-save didn't kick in. :l
#50 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:10pm by jennikins
If you're on a Mac and not using Word for Mac, download SaveCircle. It's freeware (you can find it on freemacware.com) and you can set it to auto-save your documents in any programme so shit like this doesn't happen.
Did anyone consider the fact that the computer was probably hooked up to a power strip and the dog turned the power strip off? no need to to poke and hold the "off" button and no warning.
YDI it's just common sense to save like every 5 to 10 mins.
Especially when you have the power cord/bar in reach of young children, angry parents, or pets.
The paper can't have been that big, or you would have saved at least some of it. Even the n00biest person knows to save occasionally, and if it really was a huge paper you would have probably written it over a day or two rather than in one go, and so saved when you turned off the computer to sleep. So I can only assume you lost half a page of introduction, or your 'huge paper' was in reality only 3 or 4 pages long.
time to put that dog to sleep..PERMANENTLY
YDI for not saving. Isn't there autosave? And you can't really blame your dog, what does he know?
It doesn't even have to be the power bar's switch. If it's a tower & the dog hit the power supply's switch in the back of the box just sit back & say , "Bye-bye."
Ever heard of a laptop? Yeah... There's a reason to why I've never bought anything but a laptop. Can use it anywhere, can use it without power in the house and can easily be transported to school and back home.
Well if you had Mac it would have asked you if you wanted to save it before shutting down :P
But that still sucks :(
well depending on what program you use, I think the program itself can show recent documents you have worked on like microsoft word even if you didn't save it to the desktop I believe...
Isn't there a recovery feature? Usually when my pc shuts down suddenly and I didnt save it, my work is recovered when I go into MS Word.
ctrl+s=save. press it ever couple of lines, as a novel writter, i know how important it is. also, doesn't the computer have auto recover? i mean, that really sucks but, i guess you learned the hard way.
Weren't you doing it on Microsoft word or something of the sort? Because, if so, there's autosave. If not, you're a bit idiotic -Not- to use it. : D
And this has happened to me before. It sucks hard.
and THATS why you don't have your computer on the floor, where the dog can reach it.
#67 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:29pm by Marii
MS Word has an autosave function to it. If you saved nothing anywhere, it's usually locaed on your home folder. Like in \Documents\Your Username\.doc. Check that out.
doesn't Microsoft Word autosave stuff? and then when you open word again, it'll show up as a recovered document?
I do believe YDI for not saving it after working so hard on it... CRTL + S.
you do know that most word processors if it closes suddenly will reopen EVERYTHING you have even if you didnt save
you are a fucking homo for posting complaints on this website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
usually computers re-load anything that closed suddenly.
it's called recovering :D
i hope you live recovers from its fuckedupness.
Haha
ur stupid cuz u dont press ctrl + s every several seconds!
how difficult is it to press save after every paragraph?! "click", there, it's saved!
#72, shut the eff up. that's kind of the point of FML.
HOLY FRIGGEN CRAP!!
THAT SUCKS BIG FAT MONKEY BALLS!!
sorry dude...
a lot of word processors have a crash protected save built in that lasts about an hour after you restart... that really sucks but if it was truly that important you would have at least part of it done and saved in sections over the last week or so... you totally deserved it :/
#77 - On 05/25/2009 at 6:40pm by Kaylia22
wow dosnt that suck you should have saved my teachers always tell my class that when we write an asingment
Your a fucking dumbass for not saving your work regularly.
make him sit there whn you retype it in fact use his paws
This sounds sort of fake. If he just hit the button it won't turn off straight away, and it will probably not turn off until you answer the prompt window "do you want to save this before exiting?" or whatever.
Sounds a bit fishy =/
Um, they poster could be talking about the power button on a power strip for a desktop. The power strip for my family's desktop is under the desk and the dog we watch sometimes likes to lay under the desk when someone is at the computer. It's very possible that something like that happened.
So you finished the entire lengthy paper without thinking to save? Really? Yeah, YDI.
This comment has been moderated.
#85 - On 05/25/2009 at 7:00pm by mimimi
YDI for not periodically saving
the dog deleted my homework!!
(see if any teachers believe that one:D)
#87 - On 05/25/2009 at 7:09pm by kbbe48
Thats why you should always save your stuff every couple of minutes! YDI
ohhhhh i feel bad fo you
from now on start saving after a couple
sentences [:
Either turn on auto-save or get in the habit of hitting Ctrl + S every time your train of thought ends.
YDI, YDI, a thousand times YDI.
This is a lie. No matter what computer you're using, unless it was made before 1999, anything being written in a word processor is automatically saved to your memory along with anything else you were doing when it shut down.
I agree with #92. If you turn off the computer and turn it back on, the word processor program will ask if you want to recover it. It might not be to where you were exactly, but it would have most of it still on the computer.
YDI because if this really was an important paper, you would have been saving it every time you paused to think or look something up.
#94 - On 05/25/2009 at 7:25pm by onigiriqueen
on top of the auto-save comments, if you hit the power button while you have a program open that you can edit with (such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and other things), it will ask you ARE YOU SURE..... so either... you hit the wrong button after your dog hit the power button (you idiot) or your lying (go get a life. then post the stories here). Either way. FYL.
#81- not so. If you hold the power button, the computer will just shut off. When your computer freezes, how the hell would you get a prompting to shut it off when you hit the power button?! Thought so.
It's amazing how little people know about computers! And I'm just a regular user, too. Sad.
#96 - On 05/25/2009 at 7:27pm by onigiriqueen
AIIGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
no! This sucks!
#81 if you HOLD it. I said hit it. BIG difference. The dog probably didn't hold it if it's viciously scratching itself.
Don't say I know little about computers when you know little about reading.
There is only one thing that can be definitively said here: YDI for not saving.
That said, there are a _lot_ of stupid people commenting today who apparently don't know anything about computers and/or think every computer is set up exactly like theirs.
Not every program autosaves, for example. Sure, Microsoft Word and Open Office both do, but I don't use either of those. Ever. They both suck. Plus, we don't even know what kind of paper it is. If it's at all mathematical, I'll cry if OP was using one of those. My chosen editor doesn't autosave. Thanks to a decent saving practice, this has never been an issue.
Not every power button is configured to send the shutdown signal, and power button behavior freely configurable on your computer. I, for one, prefer to keep my power button to send the power off signal instead of the shutdown signal. Further, there's the switch on the power supply and the surge protector the OP is using if ey has any intelligence whatsoever. Plus there may be a restart button on the computer. Mine, for example, automatically powers down the computer and repowers it, for use when really bad things happen.
I'd say totally believable, but still, how stupid do you have to be to get an appreciable amount done and not save?

#92 & 94 = FAIL
I have a DELL and its a 2001, and it doesnt save it. What now?
thatsss why you're supposed to save it every few seconds... =P
i've lost sooo many papers because of that. well now you know =] lol
#92 is a complete moron who is trying to sound like he knows what he is talking about. I could name several applications that do not auto-save your shit because you are too lazy but I won't bother
all of you idiots who are saying "but Microsoft Word autosaves!!!!' yes, it does. but guess what? MICROSOFT WORD IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND THEIR ARE MANY OTHER KINDS OF APPLICATIONS SO DON'T BE A CLOSE-MINDED PRICK THINK "oh they are lying or just stupid because it autosaved" BECAUSE MAYBE IT DIDN'T!
YDI for not saving, your computer could have just as easily crashed.
2 things.
1. my microsoft word does NOT autosave
2. why the hell are you on this website when you should be rewriting your paper?
YDI for not saving often.
I save every second no matter what. I add anything I need to save it. I don't trust my computer.
I modded this one. :D
That sucks. Try to get into a habit of saving every 10 minutes or so.
Then situations like this won't happen.
FYL. D:
To computer and Word Processor arguers - Computers are complex and hard to figure out. Since the OP has not given us any info about the type of computer or what word processor they used, let's not waste space arguing about it. Unless someone here KNOWS the OP and what kind of computer s/he has. If so, please help settle this quarrel.
I haven't heard this kinf of story since I was in high school.
You should save from now on.
=X
you wouldve deserved it if it was like a power outage
not saving = sloppy habits, for that 1/2 YDI
however the way that you lost it was totally random so fuck ur dog but FYL too.
but thats what saves are for, random shit like this! sorry man !
#111 - On 05/25/2009 at 8:00pm by THISISAMERICA
This is like, such a last decade problem. x_x
#112 - On 05/25/2009 at 8:01pm by JonReb
Another reason you should save. You totally deserve it.
Lol how old is your computer? 14 years old?
Everyone knows you have to hold the Power Button for at least 3 seconds to forcefully shut it down.
haha, this totally happened to me and i was going to put it up but i read this, only mine happened when a fat mexican tore out the power cable with her backpack.
For all of you calling me a retard. Learn how to use a computer. It's really simple. Now i never said anything auto-saves, i said it is saved in the memory, Find your RAM cache and you have ur paper.
this is why it gets drilled into your head to save CONSTANTLY
..........I don't believe this, First of all my computer is from 2000 and it auto saves. So lets look at it in a different view, maybe it didn't autosave, BUT on/off button to the computer FOR ALL COMPUTERS! don't just turn off at once, u have to hold the button for a couple of secs. So you story is full of holes and next time plz don't make something up so dumb.
P.S. Computer off/on buttons r either in the back of the computer (if so y was he there?) and also it would be very difficult for one of his/her claws to actually press the button!
Koda: Are you an idiot? There ARE brand new computers that can be turned off by a single, quick press of the power button. Most computers don't, but, there ARE computers that still do this. Please, don't open your trap if you don't know what you're talking about. It was the biggest pain in the ass when I was dating my ex - Even if you barely bumped that power button his computer would turn his computer right off and it would make him SO mad.
Hey, OP- If you have a bad habit of forgetting to save often, get OpenOffice (openoffice.org). (That is unless anyone else knows of something better, excluding Microsoft Word) it's basically a freeware version of Microsoft Word. It's not perfect, for instance it's really hard to make custom tables, but, it has an autosave feature and a recovery option just in case something like that happens. I feel for you dude - It sucks to lose a lot of work to some bullshit or another. FYL/YDI - Get a program that autosaves or make it a habit to manually save more often. Good luck on that paper.

if you used word, it should have autorecovery.
i know for a fact that word has autorecovery. it saves ur stuff automatically if something should happen that the program gets shut down automatically...ur fine.
u most likely made this crappy story up, because most computers nowadays have autosave. ydi
Yea you can prolly recover it if your not retarded...
You should pretty much just ALT-F4 your life.
That sucks and YDI at the same time. That's why you save every few minutes.
If you hadn't saved yet, you couldn't have been that far in... right? Is there recovery like there is on a Mac?
HAHAHA number 5!
#128 - On 05/25/2009 at 8:27pm by iluvu21396
aaaand that's why you compulsively save every time you finish a sentence. And if it's anything major, you email it to yourself at least every few hours, so you have backups. Writing a lot without saving = YDI
Save early and often. Hopefully you'll learn from this experience.
No offence....buh dats pretty stupid...lol
[Please see #53]
And, good luck finishing your paper :]
Lesson learnt. Good luck with the rewrite, hope it's not fatal. X
hey 99. I'm pretty sure your running MICROSOFT ON THAT DELL. All dell did was make the outer shell or sub contracted it. Microsoft is the OS, not the outer computer. You failed twice. Alt-F4 from your life as someone said previously. I can send you some rope or weights if you need them.
If you're going to lie about something, at least have the decency to know what your lying about.
that truely sucks, i save every few sentences.. you will now to
#135 - On 05/25/2009 at 8:52pm by curlybrunette
I just love how everyone here thinks that their computer/word processor is the same computer/word processor that everyone else in the world uses. It's quite amusing. *ahem 121, 122, and the other*
FYI: not everyone uses the same computer as you and not everyone uses microsoft word. I know that must be a shocker. I know the program I use doesn't autosave.
And, like numerous other people have said - the OP probably meant the dog stepped on the switch to her power strip, which would instantly shut off the computer.
Op - that really, really sucks. I did something similar once. Sometimes you just have to learn things the hard way. Hopefully you remember a lot of what you wrote.
Write a post-it note to yourself and stick it on your computer... "SAVE YOUR WORK!" I hope you have time to re-write the paper and submit it.
what makes the OP stupid by not saving? Smartasses. Sorry to hear it, it's happened to me before and the autosave didn't recover much. Even more annoying is when you finish something, spend hours correcting and editing then lose the work because of a power cut etc and then can't remember what you had and hadn't done and have to start over again!
YDI - every one knows by now to save, at least once every 15 minutes, minimum.
I once had a problem when I started college with a bad box of floppies. I had lost work from a computer dying before, so i decided to save to the floppy first. Took me three times to realize that the reason my computer immediately shut down, erasing my work, was due to a problem with the floppy I was trying to save the work too
ah man, that's worse than "my dog ate my homework" sux!
Yes save frequently.
I had something similar happen to me at college - someone accidently hit the "emergency off" switch that powers off all the monitors... and apparently the computer tower I was using was plugged into that circuit.... 2 hours of work down the drain. I'd been saving the work to the desktop, but the computers were programmed to wipe out all changed data upon logging off or rebooting... after that, I made a point of working only off a thumb drive, using frequent saves.
Gotta remember to keep saving that shit, bra!
FYL, but i also have to say YDI because you didn't save. i hit the save button after like every little change lol.
that's why you should get a mac
the power button is on the back of the monitor so no button to be pushed by your careless dog
that sucks, I've had that happen to me but my nephews were the one to push the button
you need to save very often or use Microsoft word, they auto save it for you.
These days the newest versions have the recovery option. It temporarily saves your file so you can retrieve it...hope you were in such luck.
The exact same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I was editing a music video i was making for my broadcast/journalism class and it had already been extremely stressful and i had already had one emotional breakdown over it. So as i was getting everything under control my dog gets under my computer desk and laid directly on the power strip disconnecting everything. I was thankful for the auto save every ten minutes on movie maker
Sorry, but YDI for not saving :| everyone should know by now to save frequently.
#150 - On 05/25/2009 at 9:56pm by liquidskyfire
Dude i feel you that happened to me twice!
First off to all those saying your an idiot for not saving... I think the OP realizes that now, we've all had something similar happen and then you start saving every 4 seconds after it happens. We all make mistakes and it fuckin' sucks. Something similar has happened several times (don't think I've ever lost everything though).
To all those talking about auto-save and auto-recover - I agree with the others... you're dumb... not every program has it.
BTW my old computer used to have a power and reset button that would turn off instantly
#125 - Hilarious! But I think the OP should probably ALT-F4 the dog's life
LMAOOO... awww, that sucks! but why don't you SAVE your work?
#154 - On 05/25/2009 at 10:15pm by randomgirl13
next time, you should try saving every five minutes.
Always "save as" as soon as you open a document, then either rely on autosave or just do what I do and obsessively hit ctrl-S every time you stop to think.
That sucks but you should have saved. Sorry though.. so yeah, FYL AND YDI
#157 - On 05/25/2009 at 10:30pm by love15
Doubt this one.
First of all, most word processing programs autosave.
Second, most computer power buttons require you to hold it until the power goes off. Unless you're working on a PC circa 1995, I highly doubt your dog pressed and held the power button.
two things can prevent this again.
one-save often(Ctrl+S are your friend)
two-change the settings on your computer so the power button doesn't turn it off but instead puts it in stand by.
there you go problem solved.
@ #157- it's easy to go into BIOS and change what happens when you hit your computer's power button. I haven't even touched those settings on my PC, but it will still start the normal shutdown procedure when I push it without holding it (and holding it for 5 seconds will shut it down immediately).
I'm a big proponent of saving often, but every normal human being gets "on a roll" and forgets to save when they have good ideas flowing quickly.
Were you more than 2 words into it?
Ouch, sucks dude, but I have to say YDI. That's why you save every 10-15 minutes. I mean really, what's harder than pressing the button that looks like a floppy disk? Shoot, I know people who are even more paranoid and do it every 2 minutes.
But I'm not going to lie about that having happened to me before. When you get into the groove, it's hard to just stop. Ah well, LOL to your unintended recreation of the old "dog ate my homework" excuse.
wouldn't your dog have to hold the power button steadily for 5 seconds for it to turn off?
well you should have saved!
#164 - On 05/25/2009 at 11:05pm by beauty88
I found out that my keyboard had an immediate shutdown/power key on it (ie, no "are you sure?) the first time my cat stepped on it. Didn't lose anything, but it can be absurdly easy to accidentally power off your computer.
why do people put YDI? Ok yea yu should save often when writing a big paper incase of accidents but it's not his fault his dog got too close to the laptop... FYL...
dude u need 2 save often. thats so ur fault & it wuz so stupid of u 2 do that. everybody knows 2 save often
That sucks, so I chose FYL. But ALWAYS save often and back that shit up. I have an external hard drive too just in case my computer crashes.
#170 - On 05/25/2009 at 11:40pm by coffeennicotine
normally the computer recovers the things that weren't saved when the computer shuts down unexpectedly
Lies Lies Lies... dogs aren't that smart.
For all those that claim that MS Word sucks and that there are plenty of "good" applications that don't autosave: apparently, not *that* good. I consider MS Word to be the bare minimum when it comes to standards. And apparently there's a lot of software out there that doesn't even come up to par with Word.
A tip if you use that kind of software: switch to something that *does* offer an autorecover function.
Some of you people are retarded.
I've been using Word and Works for over 10 years, and its ALWAYS auto-saved.
"But he/she might not use word"
True, but Word is pretty much the standard now. If s/he isn't using Word, then it's something they chose. They are not a computer novice, so they are FUCKING RETARDED for not knowing to auto-save.
"But they might use a mac"
well then they deserved it. Kidding. But yeah, you Mac people are supposed to be hip and smart.
Someone said Ever hear of a thing called Linux?
Listen, if someone used Linux, there is NO WAY IN HELL that they would forget to save. Linux people are smart. This wouldn't happen to them.
But yeah, new versions of windows (7, for instance) won't shut down until you close all apps, or force a shutdown. And, 90 percent of computers have to have the power button held. AND the OP said "the power button on the computer" not "on the powerstrip" you retards.
This is why you should always save so often while writing something. Especially something important as that.
#173: Whoa, since when was Word auto-save? Eh, might be the newest version. I need to get my hands on that.
@#172:
It's funny that you consider MS Word the "bare minimum" since it's a bloated program with *way* too many features that few people, if any, ever use. Like, seriously, more than 90% of the features are used by fewer than 10% of the people.
Since I actually know how to *save* my work, I never considered autorecover that big of a deal. I'll gladly take something smaller, lighter, faster, and easier that does what I need over Word any day. And, in fact, I do. I use vim for all of my editing purposes. Granted, it also autorecovers, but it's not a feature I _ever_ need, and I essentially turn it off.
@#173: I think most of the people who were saying these things were making the point that this wasn't necessarily a fake FML and that it was actually a YDI for the reasons you pointed out: OP had to be pretty retarded.
Besides, you're assuming that the OP set up the system all by emself, which isn't really a good assumption. I know a lot of people who have Ubuntu systems that other people set up for them, and they would probably not be saving every ten minutes, either.
And, even if 90% of computers require you to hold the power button, the point is that it's stupid to call fake on this FML. And, again, the power button behavior is _configurable_, so you really can't try to say how other peoples' computers work.
For people saying that there are many diff programs and some don't autosave...
Get one that does, wtf is the problem?
OP, FYL dude. Srry
#180 - On 05/26/2009 at 1:00am by lilcuti3pi389
Probably said before but usually a computer needs the power button to be pressed for 4 or 5 whole seconds before it shuts down... and yes you should always save in between...
That sucks...this is why I save my papers after every paragraph.
Your a fucking dumbass for not saving regularly
I always save the second I have to think of more to write. Or If I finish a page, and normally after I finish a paragraph. YDI
This happened to me, too, except it was an online exam that I couldn't re-enter, and my cat walked onto my laptop and hit the power button. :( I frantically e-mailed the professor saying that I'd accidentally hit the power button and closed the exam. All better now! So yeah, FYL, not mine.

oh ffs this is fake. If you don't use Word (since it didn't autosave), you are computer literate enough to have downloaded a word processor and obviously would save often. If you post on FML, you are computr literate enough to save. The poster is either lying or is exaggerating about losing the first sentence since it doesn't say that he began working substantially on the paper. Why do the mods even approve stuff like this? It's not funny. It's just stupid as hell. No one wants to hear about something who lost their work even if it were true, which it isn't. Completely boring. This site didn't get popular because of dumb stories of people not saving their papers.
And NO ONE loses long papers because of power button issues like this. You might lose a 2-paragraph response paper your first time using a computer in elementary school, but by the time you are doing senior papers for hs you probably save automatically without thinking about it. BS
Theres a Good dog
At least Your dog now knows a new trick:)
Wow! Your teacher will say "u might as well just say that the dog ate it".
You must have an old ass computer if simply touching the power button turns it off... most computers/laptops today have the built in feature where in order to do a hard-shutdown you must hold the button for 3-5 seconds...
Also, another reason why Cats > Dogs :) and why having your computer on a desk != having it on the floor.
( != means 'does not equal' for those less techno savvy people )
A sort of duel "your life sucks" and "YDI"
It's a shit situation, for sure, but you should always, ALWAYS save often.
At least you still had the general idea of everything you typed in your head? And now you know to keep your dog away from the computer.

#102; Only morons pay for software! (except games, the game industrie must live on) Piratebay w00t!
Lol, excuse. Backup, backup, backup. Nobody should type 2 pages without saving.
idiot :P
normally when that happens to my computer, and i havent saved it, it never gets lost bcause the pc restarts from where it shut down, therefore nothing is lost :D
ur computer sucks dude
And THAT'S why you should always save every once in a while.
F2.
The button is right fucking there and it takes half a second for the paper to save. You deserve every lost second of time.
Umm, auto-recovery? What are you using, Windows '97?
YDI for one reason.... You should made backups several times!
I know it sucks, but next time I know you won't forget it! ;)
Don't worry, mate. It couldn't have been that long of a paper if you forgot to save and did it all in one sitting.
Power buttons have to be held in for a few seconds to shutdown. Unless in the case that your dog flipped the switch at the mains. Then fyl.
Whenever you hit enter, hit save.
......
Sucks for you!
Get the hell over it. turn your computer back on. go back into the program and it will have a recent memory of most of the stuff you did
If you've ever written a paper before, you should know to either turn on autosave or use the magical Ctrl+S combo ever couple of minutes.
I've got no sympathy for you. You don't write an entire paper, or article without saving one. You're a moron for doing that, and then not promptly making a save file. Why do you think the first thing you are taught when using a word processing software is to create a save file? You can also set the stuff up to save every few minutes. It's not the dogs fault, it's yours for being ill-prepared.
That cant be right. If you're using a word processor, those usually automatically save to the last available copy after forced shutdown.
Unless its something like Word 98 or something.
That wouldn't happen on a Mac. It just goes to sleep. I agree, though, that does suck, but why didn't you save along the way? It's your last grade! You should know by now to save along the way, but yeah I know exactly how you feel. On my final paper for a class, the power went out… My paper lost a ton of progress. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed.
Did any of you guys think that maybe the dog turned the computer off by hitting the power button on the surge protector?
If that were so, there would not be time for the computer to do anything such as backup or auto-save.
First rule of doing ANYTHING on a computer: Save early, save often.
Also, what the hell kind of computer do you have anyway? I don't think I've ever seen any computer that won't shut off unless you hold down the power button for a few seconds - something which seems incredibly unlikely to happen just from your dog scratching himself.
What kinda computer has a kill switch? I have to hold mine for 10 seconds to do a manual shutdown. If I just try to shut down normally there are several steps required and all my programs prompt me to save....
Then again...it's an Macbook Pro.
Name one decent word processing application released in the last 5 years that doesn't have autosave. Unless you were writing it in notepad or something, in which case you probably would've gotten a shit grade on it anyway.
For any given paper I'll likely have about 5 different files open. One for notes, one showing the planned outline, one for citations, one for whatever else (likely a spreadsheet or something), and the main paper. Once the other four are complete and saved, the actual paper writing takes about 10 minutes a page. Lern2rite.
By the way, all you anti microsoft sheeple, MSOffice is a damn fine program and the best office suite out there. I have openoffice on my home PC, and it's more unstable than grouphug writers. Anyway I call fake.
The last computer I saw that turned off the second you hit the power button was made in the 90s.
ctrl + S, early and often, lesson learned.
Oh and the guy above me, if you unplug the power cord or turn off the surge protector the computer will turn off right away. Oh and on PC's there's a switch on the back of the power supply that will kill power right away.
WTF...ppl are right it auto saves dumbass, just reopen it. And how the hell does your dog hit the power button? For most computers you have to HOLD it down and then it turns off.. I don't believe this one..but many ppl are fackin dumbasses...
Protip: Configure your APM (advanced power managment) to put your computer on standby. That way no lost work if you accidently hit the power button.
Its suppose to autosave when ur comp shuts off, everything is automatically turned on even websites
sucks for you, but have you never been taught to save every 10-15 minutes incase anything happens. and if you're using mircosoft word, it'll recover it for you.
That really sucks, but it's not the brightest thing to NOT save. Seriously, weren't you told over and over in school to save your work every few minutes? Shouldn't your computer recover it anyways? You must have an ancient computer or something.
haha you need some k-9 advantix!!!
i always save my papers every five minutes or at least after each page i type, it doesn't take long, ctrl-s or file-save. anyways your an idiot number 11 if the power is cut without it being shut down properly nothing is backed up, the RAM is instantly cleared! so your essay was erased which sucks, and yeah get your dog some frontline or something.

That sucks, but ALWAYS save, save like every 2 seconds, also since you didn't have it saved that means you were doing the whole thing the night before, always a bad idea
I usually save every half-a-paragraph because I'm paranoid, lol. But whatever. My best friend's nephew likes to come up and press the power button constantly. It is SO SO SO SO SO annoying! Ugh. I get annoyed even thinking about it. lmfao
i would shoot my dog if he ever did that to me.
My dog locked me out of my car for a few hours over the weekend. I know how you feel.
I WOUD HAVE KILLED THAT FUCKING DOG... MAN FYL
YDI, now you'll remember to save HUGE documents
How many computers nowadays turn off when you hit the power button? When Windows XP was released every computer that was able to use it was required to have a second way of entering into sleep mode. Same with Energy Star machines. I'd say it was your fault for not updating your machine. Even the less superior computers (Macs) have a "Are you sure feature"?
YDI for not saving.
#233 - On 05/26/2009 at 10:15pm by B00
autosave? but that does suck. i would beat my dog for it if that happened to me
Microsoft word has always kept things saved automatically in case the computer shuts down spontaneously
Hah that sucks... but seriously dude, YDI for not saving your work.
I suppose you learned a valuable lesson, especially if you already had a lot done. XD
But why don't you have auto-recovery?
You were writing a "huge paper" but hadn't saved once? YDI...
P.S. Learn the ways of the save Jedi: Ctrl+S every 30 seconds.
Lesson learned the hard way: Save every ten minutes.
I still don't think he "learned" anything. People are complaining that he didn't save often but apparently he didn't save once on this large papers which is hard to believe. If the dog hit the power button, it may have started the shutdown sequence (to just kill it you usually hold) in which case a notification would ask you sure...there are programs open etc. This FML doesn't make any sense and couldnt' have happened.
YDI. Thats why you save after every line* or when making a fix*. If you're writing a paper all in one go without any thinking pauses save every 30secs or so. If you need thinking pauses, save on every pause, if you need to think after every sentences, save there.
It's little hard of course if your program takes like 5-10 seconds to save, but it's better than losing the whole work. Totally YDI.
*when you're coding at least.

Save early and often. YDI, no questions asked.
Duuude. That totally sucks. FYL and YDI for not saving.
newer versions of Microsoft word autosave stuff like that :P
Oh wow. You really should save it every so often, but that sucks. I wonder if your teacher would believe that excuse. Probably too close to the dog ate my homework :p
YDI, you should be saving important papers like that often.
you should to save frequently
MS Word and most other word processors have an autosave feature. The next time you open the program, a recovery list should pop up, and your paper should be one of the choices.
That's an fml and ydi for not saveing
My little sister did that to me..
Except she wasn't scratching herself..
And she did it on purpose =|
This is clearly made up. In order to turn off a computer with the power button, you have to hold it down for a period of time. My dog is smart, but she's not that smart!
Yeah, you should have saved every once in a while, but sorry to hear that. Did you manage to finish it anyway?
haha, myspace is way better than that sheeeeet!!
This is why you save frequently xP
