Well...try meeting real women in the real world instead of 'dating' online. Nothing wrong with meeting people online to date in real life, but to spend a whole year talking to someone you've never met and calling it 'dating' is just sad.

I think the real "FYL" is the fact you think talking to someone online for over a year is classed as "dating". The fact it was in fact a teenage boy is not surprising, people actually worth dating tend to do it in the outside world...
Dating online can work. Worked for me. But for gods sake, use common sense. I highly doubt he was so thorough as to completely fool you. There were probably lots of signs, you're just dense.

Dating online is lame enough (with seemingly no intention to actually meet or your thousands of miles apart so you can't), but the fact you never audibly spoke a word to eachother or saw a single picture is even worse. I guess he could have shown you pictures of some other girl, but I mean, webcams are built into alot of computers, same with microphones, how could you go a year without knowing?

that actually happened to my roommate-- only she wasn't dating the guy, they'd just been talking for a few years. A few weeks ago though, he said he had a confession to make.... he turned out to be a really creepy lesbian, that's obsessed with my roommate now, and won't leave her alone...

After just four months of dating online, I met my now husband in person. He's Japanese and lived in Tokyo and I'm from Wisconsin. I think there is a distinction between meeting someone online, and thinking that you are actually in a relationship if you haven't met them.
When I was 29, most of my friends were coupled up and didn't want to go to bars/ concerts anymore. My sporting interests (combat sports) were not a good way to meet girls. The dating pool was shrinking as people paired off.
Dispassionately, I realized that online dating was my best option. I gritted my teeth and put up a profile.
I met a few people, some not so great, some perfectly nice but no chemistry.
I met one girl online, had a preliminary email, then a phone conversation, before meeting. We had a nice time, hit it off and are still together 7 years later.
Obviously, I am never going to tell anyone we know how we met.

I can understand MEETING someone online, and I can understand LDR's, and I can understand being in a relationship before you've met in person (thanks to the magic of telephones, webcams and various other technologies) and I can understand a combination of all three factors. You've got to be smart when you enter an "online relationship."
Make sure you know that person, make sure they're consistent in their identity. Also, make sure there's a way to communicate with Skype or something.
