Today, I finally finished a drawing that someone had asked and said they would pay me for. I worked on it for multiple hours and was very proud of it. When it came to discussing payment, I asked what his best offer was. A pack of cigarettes. FML

Please tell me you told him no, and went searching for a new buyer. Or at least keep it, you are proud of it after all!

yikes. now you have a new painting at least.

This is why you discuss payment beforehand.

YDI. you really should have come to an agreed-upon price based on supplies, amount of time, etc. And asked for half payment in advance. Sorry OP. Hope you learned a lesson.

Because you have not discussed the terms of payment beforehand, past consideration is therefore no consideration.

You're only going to get thumbed down because people can't push a button to punch you instead.

One of my sons is an artist & got screwed the same way ONCE. He's learned to inform his "friends" up front he doesn't work for free & needs 1/2-down to buy supplies.

You should have worked out the payment before you started
