Today, I achieved a personal goal by completing a half-marathon for charity, despite being overweight and unfit before training. When I finished I cried, not because I was proud of myself, but because I ran the last 2 miles while being followed by kids on bicycles calling me a "fat cunt". FML

That's absolutely horrible I'm so sorry :( tbh I don't think I could've finished it if that had happened to me. You must be very strong willed. Congrats and sorry again.

Even though there's 14 pages of similar comments, I just wanted you to know that you those kids are terrible to say the least and you accomplished something amazing. You succeeded through your hard work while facing two obstacles: being "unfit" and having those kids heckle you. Your attitude will get you a lot farther in life than their's will. Congratulations, btw. :)

That's horrible! People can be so nasty! I'm sorry to hear that and congrats on finishing!

A friend of mine who used to be obese ran a half-marathon last week. But he did it after losing almost half of his weight. Imagine what you could do if you got into shape!

Dude. She completed a half-marathon. She's already "in shape." While she can probably improve her fitness level, and run a full marathon, that does NOT mean she is not already "in shape." No one who is not "in shape," can actually run a half-marathon. There are olympic athletes who are fat. It is how their bodies are. And people dare to tell these olympic medal-winners that they are not "in shape," just because the shape their bodies take is not the shape glamour magazines tell us is the only acceptable shape. Round is a shape. Fitness is NOT a shape. Fitness is about what the body can do, not about its shape, or size. OP is fitter than the vast majority of thin people in this world. She IS in shape. And what you just did? Trying to sound all encouraging? Well, sorry, but that was body-shaming behavior, and frankly, NOT GOOD ENOUGH! How the heck did this post get ANY YDI clicks? I'll tell you why. Thin-privilege, fat-hatred, and a general attitude of selfishness that makes people believe that anyone who does not look a particular way deserves no respect because "Ewww! I have to SEE that!". Right now, it's about fat. It wasn't always that way. Back in the paleo-times (you know, that paleo-diet that is supposed to make people thin, because "obesity did not exist in hunter-gatherer societies"), fat women were considered beautiful. That's why those ancient artists struggled so hard to sculpt FAT women, as their ideal. NOT thin women. Fat women were considered the ideal for beauty and fertility. So, you see, it's all about what people consider beautiful at the time, and the place, and the society in which they live. Currently, thin is considered beautiful, and people who hate on fat people are simply too selfish to admit that anyone who doesn't "beautify" their world even has the right to exist. They are only concerned with their own comfort level, and want to surround themselves only with those OBJECTS that give them pleasure. When you start looking at fat people as actual PEOPLE, however, you start seeing the beauty in them, as well, and stop denying them. And the kids need to be disciplined. Their parents need to be disciplined. The people in charge of administrating the marathon, who let them get away with this behavior need to be disciplined. And finally, I need to get off-line before I stab my eyes out with a fork. I am so angry.

At least you pushed yourself and you managed to reach your goal, screw what those kids think OP.

Ignore them. I bet they can't run half the marathon that you just did. You are awesome so, don't cry over a little bunch of losers (;

I will never understand why people feel the need to be cruel to those who are trying to improve their health & lifestyle. Good on you, OP!!

Ignore those little brats, I'm pretty thin and I could never do even a quarter of the race. You did amazing and it was fantastic that you tried, it's even more fantastic because you pushed yourself to finish! Be proud :)

Children are monsters. You finished the race- and they had to chase you on bikes because they couldn't do what you just did. They can say whatever they want because you now know you're not only in better shape than then but you also have stronger will power.

I'm sorry op. I think what you achieved is incredible. It's much better in the long run to have to work hard for what you want, even if it doesn't seem like it now. It helps build character and makes you become a strong, hard-working person. I'm skinny and appear "fit" but can hardly run a mile! When things are just handed to you, it's easy to become super lazy. I wish I was hard-working like you!

And this is exactly why we need to stop talking about thin = healthy or fit, when it obviously does not. Thin = thin. Fat = fat. Healthy = healthy. Fit = fit. These are *separate* attributes that often intersect, but not always.
