Today, I was driving my car like any ordinary day. My dad had been harping on me about not checking the oil, so I finally checked it. Driving down the road my hood flew up and shattered my windshield. I forgot to latch my hood after checking the oil. $300 for a new windshield. The oil was fine. FML

Today, I purchased a new car. On the drive home, gusts of wind blew up debris and pebbles and caused little chips in the paint and small chips on the windshield. FML

Dad, stop driving my car

Today, my dad was looking for something in the garage and accidentally knocked over a heavy box, which crushed the new side view mirror I'd bought for my car, because the one my car originally had, he smashed it against a pole while driving my car recently. FML

Today, it was a VERY windy day. A tree blew over and landed on my car, obliterating the windows, and totalling it. I only bought it yesterday. FML

Today, I was driving to visit my parents for the first time in two years. After spending about $4000 to make sure my car wouldn't break down on the journey, around the halfway point, the front tire popped and the engine blew out. I'm about 5 states away from both my parents and my home. FML

Today, I found out the real reason my dad bought a new car and generously gave me his old one. He knew the engine was about to fail and didn't want it to be his problem when it finally did. It blew out while I was driving at high speed on the motorway. Just my luck. FML

Today, I couldn't get my car hood to open to check the fluids. A few miles down the highway, though, it popped right open. FML

Today, while driving home from work, I heard a loud crash immediately followed by the sound of wind and shifting glass over my head. My sunroof exploded for no perceptible reason 5 days before Christmas. FML

Today, my father took me out for some driving lessons. Out of nowhere, a huge, apparently suicidal bird dove into the windshield, putting a crack in it. My father yelled at me as if it was my fault, and is demanding I pay for the repairs. FML

Today, my car broke down. My dad insisted he could fix it, but screwed up in the process. After finally getting the car towed to a mechanic, I was told that I'd only needed a new water pump, but thanks to the damage my dad did, fixing it all will cost me a small fortune. FML

Today, I was driving home on the highway with my wife and her parents. As I overtook another car, a rock got kicked up into our windshield. My wife screamed about the crack it created, while my mother-in-law goaded her on and mocked my "piss-poor driving." FML

I think that along with a driving test, a "Simple car care 101" test has to be taken too in order to have a licence. If you can't take care of your car you shouldnt have one !

Umm dude...the hood is supposed to latch itself. It's not this persons fault for having a car that doesn't do what it was built to do.

To the people down voting, this comment makes perfect sense. All newer cars (I have no idea exactly when it started) have a secondary hood latch. You have to both pull a lever in the car, and physically open a latch on the hood, exactly to avoid this. OP's car must be quite old to not have that feature.

Ummm. fail. Only way that happens is on a freeway, and it would be shaking dramatically with wind getting under it. There is no way you would miss that. Honestly, I've done it.. but it didn't flip up, it was still on the latch.

My car is a 78 nova. Before I finally adjusted the hood it would come up all the time right at 40 mph. But the latch always caught it. That said I have seen one come up at 20 mph.

I've actually seen this happen to people. and #4 I have driven with my hood unlatched on the highway. Im notorious for hitting hood latch instead of my trunk when I go to put things in it. Anywho, it doesnt shake dramatically, mine is hardly noticeable.
