Yeah, Mike
Today, I finally put the finishing touches to a huge project after 8 months of gruelling work. My boss had used the promise of a 5-figure bonus to motivate me. When I casually brought the bonus up later in the day, my boss just said, "Gratitude's its own reward, Mike." FML

Was it agreed upon officially ? And was the work extra or just a part of your job description?

From now on ask for it up front

I'm surprised it didn't turn out to be a five finger bonus in the form of a high five

Yet another example of why you always get it in writing.

I would suggest looking for a reassignment or work elsewhere. That manager clearly doesn't appreciate you. If you do leave, make sure someone higher up knows why.

Your correct use of grammar is so refreshing.

You should do your job without thinking you will get rewarded. Your pay check is your reward. Think it of a vacation from poverty.

Most jobs are below the poverty line anyway.

Report it to HR, and point out that if this is allowed to stand, you should be allowed to categorically refuse extra 'bonus' opportunities. And if they agree, follow through. Be the biggest pain in the ass you can manage until they relent.
