Which is worse?

Today, my husband was diagnosed with cancer, but that's not the worst part. He immediately told me he wanted a divorce afterwards. He insists that he's doing it for me. FML

I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis, but he may be divorcing you so you can keep half the assets and the hospital can't come after you for to pay his bills. Otherwise, his care might deplete ALL the assets you have together. You could still act like you're married. Hear him out.

This was my first thought, too. My SO and I are not legally married because we both have more benefits that way. Instead we formed a trust and both have medical and legal POA's for each other. Welcome to our crappy health care system. 'Merica! fu©k yeah! /s

I have heard of married couples doing this. But they only do it if they know the cancer is terminal.

Perhaps he just wants to spend his final days in peace and freedom.

Cancer isn't always a death sentence. Depending on his prognosis, this could be a misguided decision at best or a suspect one at worst.
