Unlucky for some
Today, I went to a big family dinner. I didn't realize I hadn't been invited until we were about to sit down to eat. There were 12 chairs, 12 plates, 12 forks, and 12 glasses. I was the 13th person to arrive. FML

It's alright OP just serve yourself a plate to go. Just put all kinds a food and when you leave just say thanks for the food.

Sometimes, someone amongst the family hears the words "family dinner" and stars inviting other family members unbeknownst to the one actually hosting the dinner. My extremely elderly in-laws do this all the time to the point if we don't get a personal invite from the host themselves, we just don't go. Then again, my family in-law are also the type to let you find out that you weren't invited in the same manner as you OP. It's frustrating, and passive aggressive as well. We just leave, to be honest. Not the best solution but I can't waste my time in such petty behavior. Point is, you're not alone. Chin up.

Some of my friends took it upon themselves to invite other not so friends of mine to my hen do. It was well intentioned but I'd rather they mentioned it to me first!
