Today, yet again, I got into an argument with my dad. I have a PhD in the subject. But he's "entitled to his opinion", for, as he said, he's read a summary of the history of the country in a tourist guidebook, and the general view doesn't have to be based on more detailed information. He also corrects me when I speak the language, which he doesn't know. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my dad spent 30 minutes incorrectly correcting me about our legal system. He thinks he knows more than me because he's been divorced twice. I'm a lawyer. FML
Booksmart
Today, my dad accused me of being illiterate when I used a word he'd never heard of, saying it sounded like lazy slang, and that it wasn't a real word. He then yelled at me for being a "smartass who's always right" when I read aloud the definition from his 1978 copy of Webster's dictionary. Guess he's not enthused. FML
Geography for Dummies
Today, I had an argument with my dad about Venice being in Italy, not Spain. He wouldn't believe me, and had to Google it. He's an engineer for an aerospace company. FML
Genius
Today, my dad and I got into an argument. When I was proven wrong, he said, "Good job, genius." I shot back the first thing that popped into my head, which was "I am NOT a genius!" He laughed and says that if I die before him, he's having that engraved on my tombstone. FML
Doctor Google
Today, my mother-in-law 'corrected' me while I was trying to help her father with his Parkinson's medication. She went on and on about how she read on the internet about it. I'm a neurologist, but no, she knows better after a Google search. FML
Knowledge
Today, my mom hit me in the face after an argument she didn't win. According to her, Mexican and American are languages, and not dialects or nationalities. She even argued with my teachers, and threatened to remove me "from a school full of uneducated people" after they told her I was correct. FML
Today, I got into a heated argument with my mom, because apparently I'm an idiot for not sharing her belief that chickens are mammals. She has a university degree in this stuff. FML
Today, my dad forced the whole family to sit through a two-hour lecture, with supporting research, on how the "Mayan prophecy" is actually a load of shit fabricated by conmen. Nice to know he thinks we're all borderline brain-dead, gullible fuckwits who believed it to begin with. Thanks, dad. FML
Misunderstood
Today, I was trying to explain to my mother-in-law how I hated the way my father-in-law talks to me, the tone he uses. She thought I was attacking him and got mad at me. FML
Thanks Dad
Today, and every time I want to try something new, my dad starts pointing out why it’s a stupid idea, or how it will obviously go wrong, and gets himself so worked up that in the end he’s just shouting at me while I cower, yet it also makes him mad when I just sit in my room with no hobbies. FML

Some fathers have a hard time when they realize their children are smarter than they are.

Just ignore/ don't respond to his incorrect comments. And roll your eyes when he's not looking.... Or (obviously) exaggerate when you simply reply, "Oh, you're SO right, Dad!" In other words, "you can't fix stupid," so no sense in trying in this case.

I feel for you. Ignorance might be a bliss for your dad but not for who is chatting with him

I’ve noticed this is a generational thing. There’s a generation of middle-aged to older people who think that experts are wrong because their experience goes against said experts. My mom’s this way too.

he is technically right, you know?

If this is a recurring thing, why do you still allow it to happen? Simply don't give in to those topics/discussions.

Lots and LOTS of ignorant people loooove to use the "i'm entitled to my opinion" phrase. They are usually folks who are unable to admit they could be wrong or don't know something, and rather than educate themselves or be open to anything they try to drag every else's knowledge down. What they are really saying is "my opinion is just as valid as your actual knowledge or facts." For examples, see the 2016 elections. My favorite response is 'you are entitled to your opinions. But what you are stating are FACTS, not opinions. You are not entilted to your own facts."

Your dad may be wrong, but just because you have a PhD doesn’t automatically make you right. Calmly explain it to him or show him proof to backup your claim. If he still ignores it no point in discussing it further.

My father used to do the same with me. I have a science and mathematics degree, he would argue with me tooth and nail that he was right about things based on stuff he saw on since show on TV. I used to put the phone down on speaker phone and walk away.. Let him talk it out, then come back without him ever noticing. If I didn't do this, his stubbornness would drive me to insanity.
