Today, while he was eating chicken, one of my friends asked me why I'm a vegetarian. I responded that I believe in animal rights and don't like the conditions the animals are forced to live in. He looked at me incredulously before explaining that "chickens aren't animals, they're birds." FML

...So? That is just what vegans and vegetarians oppose, that they are treated so badly. A fair share of vegans and vegetarians wouldn't have any problem with eating meat if the animals were treated better.

Im vegan and i don't eat animals for many reasons but the main reason that animals do have a soul and emotions too .. So in this case what is the different between birds and animals?? Why you eat chickens?

You do understand that you can buy free-range meat, right? I really hope that isn't your only reason for being a vegetarian. Supporting organic and free-range goes much farther than not buying at all. Money talks and if the money is going toward humane treatment people will follow.

Agreed; unless someone truly feels uncomfortable eating meat, I really see no point in being vegetarian or vegan if you can just buy free range products.

I think he has 'animals' confused with the term 'mammals' which birds aren't. If not, then he really is ignorant. Strangely, I've heard this mistake before where chickens are birds and not animals.

It's kind of scary how many people think like this. My middle school principal and my high school history teacher both believed fish aren't animals. And not in the vegetarian sense either, but the biological sense. They honestly believed only horses, pigs, dogs, ect. are considered animals. Just one of the many examples of how the education system is going downhill.
