Today, while at work at a call center, I got a call from an elderly man who needed a new credit card because he'd accidentally cut up his own card instead of his wife's. Trying to be funny, I said "Trying to keep her in line, eh?" Turns out his wife had just died. FML

OP here! Thanks for the support and all. The cardmember was actually really understanding about it. I immediately apologized, but he was really cool. Could have been a bad situation furshur. I'm glad he wasn't a grumpy old man!

It's not like you knew she had passed away. Don't beat yourself up about it.

He was keeping her in line for the crematorium.

Sorry but I'm gonna say you deserved it, it's not really that much your fault, but it's a pretty easy guess if they're old.

I agree your life sucks because you didn't know and the outcome, but you kind of deserve it for making the joke in the first place. Probably shouldn't be making jokes with strangers over the phone.

You are serious? Wow I bet you are fun to meet in real life.

So that must mean your greeting is now "Hello, thanks for calling! My name is Caller IDick, how can I help you?"

Although he is probably very upset over his wife's passing I don't think your comment did any extra damage. It was probably just awkward for you both. Don't worry, OP, you couldn't have known

I'm sorry that happened but I'm glad you got someone who was nice and understanding about it

I have to say, I don't see anything good possibly coming out of your comment, in any situation. Obviously you didn't think about her being dead, but what other options are there? either he actually is as controlling as you "jokingly" implied, or he had a huge fight with her or something and is getting revenge. I can't imagine your comment being appreciated either way... that's not to say I've never said dumb/offensive things accidentally myself :P

What if she asked him to cut it for her ? Did you think of that ?

He seemed like the kind to laugh it off. Not the kind to blow up about it. I had been talking to him for a while. If I thought it was an inappropriate thing to say to him at that time, I wouldn't have said it. But thankfully he was really kind in assuring me he was offended in the slightest.

that's not a funny joke anyway, asshole.

That's a horribly sexist thing to say. YDI.

How is it sexist when men do all the work while all women stay at home painting their toenails and gossiping?

I was so hoping I'd get that response. I'm a girl, just so us know. Honestly there's nothing wrong with making a harmless joke.

Im still confused on how this was sexist.lol

Sexism is internalized. Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you can't say misogynistic things.

Before I read the ending, I thought it was kind of funny for you to say OP. I think more people should be like the man you were talking to and lighten up. Taking offensive easily makes you grumpy! (#58 & 60)
