Today, I finally determined the source of the horrible smell that periodically invades my apartment: there's nothing wrong with the plumbing as I previously thought, I can just smell my neighbors pooping in their bathroom on the other side of the wall. FML

Today, I cleaned my entire apartment hoping to find the source of the terrible odor I've been smelling for the past week. It's me. FML
Today, I found the source of the bad smell that has been plaguing me for the past two weeks in my apartment. The police knocked on my door asking if I've seen my neighbor recently. I haven't. The smell has been that of a dead person. It's a smell that even Febreze can't remove. FML
Today, I realized that having the apartment bathroom next to my bedroom space isn't so great and convenient when it's occupied by my evil roommate, Fartzilla. I hear every constipated grunt, despite having music turned up. Worse, it's like living next to a poop-pourri factory. Nose bleach, anyone? FML
Today, I realised I can tell which family member has just left the bathroom from the smell alone. FML
Today, after scrubbing every surface twice a week for a month, I finally found the source of the pee smell in my bathroom. Under the toilet. The people who built our house didn't think it was necessary to seal around the toilet. There was two years of pee under there. FML
Today, the landlord of our building constructed a bathroom in the space under the stairs, outside my office, on the other side of a thin wall. He must have some kind of bowel disorder, because now I get to hear the sounds of his loud, wet and gassy pooping several times per day. FML
Today, I noticed that the walls of my apartment are ridiculously thin, when I heard my neighbor slowly walk up the stairs, slam the bathroom door, lift the toilet cover, take a pee and end with a nice "AAHH." FML
Today, I finally found out what the weird sour smell that's been in my dorm room for a while is. My roommate's sweat. FML
Today, while going to the bathroom, I noticed a smell lingering. It smelled good so I kept sniffing the air. And then it hit me. My poop! My poop smelled good and I'd been sniffing and enjoying it. FML
Today, I now know why my next-door neighbour can't look me in the eye without smirking. He can hear every grunt, groan, fart and strain that happens in my bathroom from his bathroom. FML

You need to contact your building services. You clearly have leaks in that wall. Smell won't go through two panels of sealed drywall and whatever insulation should be in that wall as well.

You could open a yankee candle in your apartment and fight the smell with lots and lots of candles. Just hope your thin walls aren't also fire hazards!!

Ask your neighbors nicely to make sure they use the toilet for pooping. Pooping in the room that coincidentally has the toilet is not "close enough."

It's probably that the vent fan ducting in both of your apartments is connected together, so it's easier for their poopy air to go into your place than out the ductwork. A piece of cardboard over your vent fan, removed when you need to use it and replaced afterward, will do the trick. Or you can leave your vent fan on all the time, which is neither energy efficient or good nor good for the fan.
