Today, while at my aunt's funeral, my grandma who has terrible memory loss asked me whose funeral we were at. I had to explain to her that her daughter had died. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, at my grandmother's funeral, my senile grandfather kept asking me "Where's granny? I've been looking for her, but I can't find her." FML
Today, my mom asked me to help pick out clothes for my grandma to wear in her casket. I didn't know she'd died. FML
Today, after mourning and making my girlfriend cancel her big birthday party, I found out my grandma didn't actually die. FML
Today, at work, I served a customer who looked so much like my grandma that I thought it actually was her. Then I remembered she died 6 months ago. I had to serve customers with a smile on my face while choking back tears for the rest of the day. FML
See you around, then
Today, at the end of my great grandmother's funeral, her daughter (my grandma) told me and my mother that she doesn’t have a reason to come back and visit anymore, and that everyone in her life is now gone. FML
Nice try
Today, I told my boss that my grandma died to get a day off work, but then my grandma showed up at the office looking for me because she wanted to go shopping. FML
Today, I was at my grandma's funeral. While giving the eulogy, I accidentally mixed up "You will be missed" and "You won't be forgotten" and instead said "You won't be missed." FML
Today, I was standing in the parking lot with my sister, after my aunt's funeral, when my grandma walks up and says to my sister, "You're the one going places in life, I'm proud to have you as a grand daughter." She then looked at me, and walked away. FML
Come on, dude…
Today, I was at my mom's funeral. My sisters and I were sitting in the front row. The funeral director, whom we had met with twice before, was going around greeting everyone. When she got to us, she asked where our mom was. Seriously? FML
Unforgettable
Today, I was mistaken for an employee at my grandmother's funeral. There were only twelve of us there, all family. FML

That must have been a horrible thing to tell her.

Tell her to hop in there with her. Sounds like she's pretty much done anyway.

I can't even imagine how hard it would be to explain that. :( Sorry for both of your losses.

This is without a doubt the saddest thing I've ever read on this website. I'm so sorry for your loss and I'm deeply sorry that you and your grandmother had to go through that. I don't know how the care system works where you are, but I hope you're getting help if you need it. Family Caregiver Alliance, Dementia UK (Even though you're from Illinois, their website still has good information) and Alzheimer's Society all give pretty good advice and support if you ever need it. There are also forums where you can talk to others about anything that's troubling you. I'm sorry if I'm overestimating your grandmother's memory loss and I know you might already know about these, but I was just making sure. :)

In the US, there's the Alzheimer's Association. Their website (alz.org) has great info, and links to local support groups (several in Illinois).

It's always tough to be the bringer of bad news, not to mention potentially having to do it more than once.

Most of the FML's on this site have some element of humor to it, but this one is just really sad and make me want to cry in a corner

All the YDI's must have clicked it on accident with their big thumbs, because nobody with a heart would say that.

I'm not looking forward to telling my nan if any of her children die before her. The last funeral she wasn't invited to because her memory would just upset everyone.

I know what you're going through, OP. My grandmother has Alzheimer's. I have to explain to her about 50 times a day that her husband of 60 years (my grandpa) died back in December, that's why he hasn't come to get her & she lives with me now. It's torture

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but have you considered just telling her something else if she's going to forget anyway? Like maybe her husband had something to do while she's visiting you. Sorry if you've already thought of that and it somehow didn't work. I'm just trying to help.

Why tell her? Does it achieve anything other than upset her?

it isn't her fault. I mean she has a faulty memory. at least in her mind most things are good and well ... sorry for the loss OP
