Today, a tattoo artist send me home without tattoo because the acne on my back has gotten so bad, he refused to work on such an 'unpredictable surface'. FML

Today, I was getting my first tattoo done. My parents told me it was a bad idea. My friends' parents told me it was a bad idea. I told them that people get tattoos done all the time and nothing goes wrong. Fifty minutes into the tattoo on my back, the artist said, "Oh shit, shit, shit. We can fix this." FML
Today, my quite squeamish girlfriend came with me to get my latest tattoo. She saw a few drops of blood, screamed in the tattooist's ear, and completely fucked up part of the outline. She had to alter the tattoo drastically to cover up the mess and now it just looks bad. FML
Today, I got into trouble at work because a customer complained about my face tattoo, I don't have a face tattoo but I do have one behind my ear. Nonetheless, I still got written up and had to cover it with a band-aid, which ripped out hair when I took it off. FML
Today, I went to a tattoo artist to get what I thought would be really cute, elegant finger tattoos. I left with wobbly, blobby messes all over my fingers. FML
Today, I was showing my unique new tattoo to my friends when a man approaches me with his digital camera and asks if he could take a picture of the tattoo for his website. I agreed. I find out later that it's a site about ugly tattoos. FML
Today, my girlfriends and I got a caricature painting while on a trip in the city. Unfortunately for me, the part of my appearance that the artist decided to exaggerate was my acne. FML
Today, I got fired for having a visible tattoo on my neck. The tattoo in question is a scar from a surgery I had 2 months ago. The same one paid for by my employer's insurance and missed 2 weeks of work for. FML
Today, my friend sent me a link to a "horrible" tattoo that he found online, that a guy had gotten at my tattoo parlor. FML

Lots of tattoo artists will actually refuse for that reason. Because the skin is unpredictable, the tattoo may heal irregularly or unevenly which screws up the art and that's bad for you and bad for the artist.

Lots of tattoo artists will actually refuse for that reason. Because the skin is unpredictable, the tattoo may heal irregularly or unevenly which screws up the art and that's bad for you and bad for the artist.

This is actually pretty common. It can affect how the tattoo is carried out or how it heals, and can even open you up to infection. Granted they could have been more tactful in their wording but they were looking out for your best interest and your health.

if you knew your acne was bad maybe you should've had that taken care of. I would find it incredibly gross to tattoo someone with acne on their back.

Have you seen a dermatologist for it? Maybe you need an acne medication prescribed.

I know little about tattoos but would a tattoo have affected your skin in terms of oil content and other things that affect acne? Maybe are you tattoo would not react well

Tattooing over an acne makes the ink set into the acne instead of the skin cells making for an ugly tattoo. It also makes it way easier to get an infection because the needles would pick up the bacteria in the acne and spread it over the whole area. A reputable tattoo artist will refuse to tattoo over even a mild break out.

That's embarrassing, but reasonable enough. Would you rather have an increased risk of infection or good work turned to crud? Or would you rather have no tattoo until your problematic skin is corrected?
