Today, some well-meaning soul told me to just pray my depression away, which would be about as effective as praying away a knife in my shin. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I opened up to my best friend about my depression. Her response: "If you're so depressed, why don't you just kill yourself?" FML
Dad of the year
Today, my dad told me that people requiring psychiatric treatment are just weak and pathetic, and what they really need is a kick up the ass and to get a fucking grip. He told me this not 30 seconds after my doctor recommended I spend some time in a facility for my severe depression. FML
Get a second opinion
Today, I saw my specialist and I told her that one of my medications is messing with my head too much. I said that it’s making my depression so bad I have started cutting again, and want to walk in front of a truck. They said I just have to "suck it up". FML
Today, a therapist told me that I was too depressed to attend his depression group meetings. FML
Wow, thanks, I'm cured
Today, I told my mom that I'm bulimic and have been for a few years, and that I needed help. She responded by saying, "Well that's clearly not working for you. Why don't you try anorexia?" She then patted me on the head, smiled, and walked away. FML
Mixed feelings
Today, I somehow have both crippling depression and a fear of death. Please end me, but don't. FML
Wow, thanks, I'm cured!
Today, my dad told me that I'm a weak and negative person because I suffer from depression and anxiety, then he told me to just snap out of it. FML
Wow, thanks, I'm cured!
Today, I got the best advice for my depression and anxiety from my parents and relatives: "Get it out of your head, there's no such thing. And get married!" FML
Today, I was diagnosed with depression. My girlfriend's idea of consoling me was to break up with me because she can't date a "psycho". FML
Keep it down
Today, my wife told me to stop talking about my depression, in case the neighbours hear and think she’s a bad wife for not being able to keep me happy. FML

I'm religious and even I think people get a bit too crazy about God being the only answer, don't worry OP, there are people out there who will and want to help you!

I feel ya. I suffer from very severe depression, as well as schizoaffective disorder, and I can't tell you how often I'm told to just "look at the bright side of life" or "just ignore the voices". People just don't understand.

as a Muslim Imam (well almost) and someone who has suffered from anxiety for years, I can say that at least the Islamic view is that prayer isn't the only treatment. I definitely respect the work of psychologists, and medications. However, I have experimented with some prayers as well that do wonders for my anxiety! so i guess balance is key here :)

I'm a Discordian and so the idea of prayer is probably not one that meshes well with other perceptions of it, but I have found the Litany Against Fear from the Dune novels is very helpful if I can manage to recite it to myself mid panic attack.

I know that feeling!!! Although I do strongly believe in God, people don't understand how difficult dealing with depression is. I pray and take my meds. When I don't take my meds for days at a time, people notice and ask if I've taken them.

Prayer can help, but if you have already decided that it is stupid and can't do anything then you are defeated before you begin. If you pray for help with your depression with an open heart, help will come to you. It won't magically disappear, but rather the exact kind of help you need will become available at just the right time. God answers prayers, just not always how you think He might.

I find that prayer and spirituality help me with my depression and anxiety. But they are only part of how I deal with it, prayer alone won't help and if you are not a spiritual person then it won't help at all regardless. There are many forms of treatment, find the ones that resound with you.

Look, this is headology. Plain, simple headology as practiced by Granny Weatherwax. If it isn't going to actually cause harm, most any useless remedy will have the same degree of effectiveness as any other that the patient -truly believes in- Headology is well and good in many cases, and when headology isn't working, then you know to bring out the big guns. Be they Magrat with her herbs or other medicines, or the serious stuff, the down in the bone magic that's knowing things others don't. But that's advice for those who live on a world that goes about on the backs of four elephants atop the shell of a giant turtle, a world that runs on narrativium. Most of us don't live there. At least not all the time. (But it is a good place to visit.) Well intentioned or not, you can't heal a wound that's being stabbed constantly. Good on you for knowing how useless such advise is.

I've been told the same thing about my severe anxiety. By someone in the medical field. I've been trying to pray their license to practice away, but it's not working.
