Today, one of my friends made it to school. He has been sick recently, missing days out of the week. When I saw him, I greeted him with, "Were you dying yesterday?" Apparently he wasn't, but his grandmother really did. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Adieu
Today, I saw an old friend while out and about. Since I don't leave the house very often, my friend was surprised to see me in person. He jokingly asked if someone was dying, and I cried in response. I was in fact going to the hospital to say goodbye to my grandma. FML
Brain freeze
Today, I work at a hospice center. At 3AM, a call just went out to a man's family to come because he was dying. I didn't realize that this man was my old friend's grandpa. When I saw her, I smiled really big and said, "Hey! Great to see you!" Her grandpa was ACTIVELY DYING. Stupid stupid stupid. FML
Foot in mouth
Today, one of my closest friends and I got into a fight. She ended the conversation with, "My grandma just had a stroke. Bye." I didn't believe her so I replied "That's great. Bye." Turns out her Grandma is in the hospital in critical condition. FML
Technicality
Today, I announced to my friends that my grandmother is dying. My best friend pulled out his phone and casually announced, "Technically, everyone is dying." FML
Today, I texted a friend offering my condolences over the death of his grandfather. He hadn't been told his grandfather had died yet. FML
Not funny
Today, while having lunch with my grandparents, my grandpa's eyes glazed over, his head fell and he slumped in his chair. I started panicking and almost cried, thinking he was dead. Then he laughed and said "Just kidding. I'm fine." FML
Today, I had to cancel my plans to go see my grandma, because I wasn't feeling too well. I called her to apologize, but she had trouble remembering who I was. When I told her my name, she said "Oh, the FAT one." Yes grandma, the fat one. FML
Today, after mourning and making my girlfriend cancel her big birthday party, I found out my grandma didn't actually die. FML
Nice try
Today, I told my boss that my grandma died to get a day off work, but then my grandma showed up at the office looking for me because she wanted to go shopping. FML
Today, I went to see my ill granddad in hospital. I saw lots of doctors around his bed, and they pronounced him dead, so I ran out crying. A little later, I found out that my granddad had been moved, and it was a different man in his bed. FML

That's honestly a terrible way to greet someone, bro :

My friends say it to me all the time because I'm always absent. I can see how OP would too if they're close friends. Just bad timing.

Depending on how cool OP was with their friend, it's not too out of place to joke around during a greeting. It just so happened that OP accidentally made the joke at the wrong time

An honest mistake. How would you know? Don't worry OP, I'm sure he didn't find it offensive.

I think it was a little to early for his friend, it might not be so offensive but it can be a very emotional topic to be touched and given it happened recently means the wound would still be raw. Unlucky op maybe you can take him out for some lunch or something to help him cheer up.

This is not even a good FML. Why does this get published?

Ouch. It happens, OP. I know you didn't mean any harm by the comment, and you couldn't have known. Try not to beat yourself up about it.

Friends greet themselves in different ways all the time. This is in no way OP's fault. Just unfortunate timing.

Well I can't exactly blame you, but maybe next time just be a bit safer with how you greet a mate after their absence. I offer my condolences to your friend for the loss of his grandmother.

If someone's missing from school it's usually safe to assume there's a reason. Maybe next time you'll know to find out that reason before making jokes that could make you out to look like an asshole.

People may skip or take vacations though

Or he could have been sick, like OP assumed, because he HAD been recently sick...

Honestly op, if I was that guy I would've started laughing.

Body language would have helped in this situation, your friend would probably have seemed more down than if he were to be sick, sorry about his grandma

Hopefully if he's a good enough friend to forgive you. Otherwise sorry for you cause of how bad a slip up that was. Also for your friend for losing someone
