Today, my son was expelled from school for bullying. The event in question took place off campus, during spring break, and was a friendly scuff. The iPhone video they used as evidence clearly showed the other boy laughing his head off and both of them sharing a coke afterwards. FML

Today, I finally had it with the redneck bully who's been tormenting me. He was repeatedly poking and pinching me and laughing out loud during class, so I slung him to the ground, pinning him. I got suspended. They only called his parents, who never do anything; my "caring" parents are looking into teen boot camp. FML
Today, I got my ass beat by some kid in my grade. The reason I was targeted? The superintendent, aka my idiot father, suspended him for defending himself in another fight. The kid told me it's not personal, he needed to prove a point that our school doesn't do shit about bullying, As much as I agree with him… FML
Today, I had to pick my son up from school after he beat the crap out of another student. The words that made him go nuts were apparently, "You mad, bro?" FML
Today, my son, who to my great shame is a typical bully, was suspended for bullying a disabled girl. Her father must have been the biggest, meanest, most tattooed ex-marine I've ever seen. He blamed me for bad parenting, and I actually peed myself a little in fear, which he saw too. FML
Today, I was suspended from school for “being involved in a fight.” The other girl beat me up while I didn't do anything to defend myself, for fear of getting in trouble. She got off scot free. FML
Today, as a teacher, I saw a younger boy kick an older boy in the crotch and I reported it in our online system. Despite typical consequences for violence (automatic suspension), the department head, a drinking buddy of the boy's parents, gave him only a single detention. Now, the department head is harassing me for reporting the incident. FML
Today, a student told me to "F*** off!" I reported it to my boss and the student's parent, who is also a teacher at the school. My boss deemed it a minor issue and said we wouldn't be following discipline policy. Now, my boss frequently visits my classroom to bully me, likely due to the two of them being drinking buddies. FML
Today, my daughter was expelled from her school for beating another kindergartener with a Dr. Seuss book. FML
Today, my 14 year-old got a 5-day suspension for fighting. He stood up for an 7th grader who was getting picked on. While the poor kid was eating lunch, they were messing with him when my son stepped in. There were some words said, then a fight. He feels terrible for fighting but I think he was in the right. FML
Today, I finally stood up to the guy who's been bullying me for the last 2 years. Even though he's been caught in the act several times, he never gets punished, so I figured I'd get away with gut-punching him. Nope. An hour later, I was suspended from school. FML

Appeal their decision! If the video does show that, then they have no grounds to expel.

Ask them to show you the rule that prohibits that off campus off grounds. Also try getting the other kids present to say something as well.

They don't care about REAL bullying. But as far as i experienced they do care a lot as soon as a video or something even remotely shows that someone COULD be bullied and then overreact like shown in the post. In most european schools (which i have experienced or heard of) being expelled is the last thing that would happen and there would be lots and lots of talks and meetings beforehand.

My how things changedWhen I was in school kids were treated as “free range” and unless someone was bleeding from their injuries or the incident happened in class or on school grounds they were completely hands off. I can even remember in high school that two boys got into a fight just off school grounds while a coach watched to make sure it was a fair fight. Times were different.... Then the “zero tolerance” days started when my son was in school and suddenly anything that was against school rules at all was a huge deal. I still think though, that off campus things were treated as not a school issue - but it would depend on how “off campus” it was. If it was within sight it might still have been an issue, I am not sure. Most bullying now does not start with a physical fight or attack. Most of it is verbal and both girls and boys can do it. But it is hard to sort out conflicting claims over verbal bullying - But seeing a physical fight between two kids is a lot easier to prove so they go after that a lot harder. OP - Assuming the facts are as stated and you have proof then you have a clear case that they over-reacted.

Laughing and sharing coke after? Were they filming a skit or a soda commercial? Sounds iffy also off campus now doesn't matter if it breaks schools code of conduct.
