Today, my professor informed me that if I didn't "show more commitment" to my choral ensemble he would give my spot to a "more interested young woman." I missed class to see my neurologist. Apparently my seizures are a symptom of lack of commitment. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
You OK, hun?
Today, I had a seizure in class. Being an epileptic, I had warned my professor of the possibility that I could have one in class. She was understanding and seemed very concerned about my issue at the time. After I had the seizure, however, she asked me if I had ever tried exorcism. FML
Toxic workplace
Today, I had a seizure for the first time in months. My fiancé went over to my job to let them know I wouldn't be going in. My boss bitched both of us because I didn't call myself. Sure, I'll get right on that when I'm conscious. FML
Cruel world
Today, I tried to explain to my professor why I’d missed two classes. Even with a doctor’s note explaining my very serious health issues, she rolled her eyes and huffed, "Maybe if you’re ‘oh so sick,’ you should just drop out!” Gee, sorry for trying to improve my life through adversity. FML
Today, I told my professor that I'll be missing class next week due to upcoming surgery. I asked if I could take the exam that I'd otherwise miss another day. He said no, and that I'd just have to take a failing grade, then wished me luck with the surgery. FML
Today, my piano teacher told me that she "forgot" to inform me that she volunteered me to play a 5-page song in a recital in front of 300 people that's happening next week. FML
Glee
Today, I performed in my school's choir concert. The girl next to me started to pass out, and I grabbed her so she wouldn't hit her head. After we were done performing and the curtains closed, my choir teacher dragged me off stage and said I was getting an F for "creating a distraction". FML
Today, I explained to my teacher that I wasn't at school yesterday due to three doctor appointments for my moderate epilepsy. Yesterday was senior skip day. She gave me detention for lying. FML
Stay safe, stay home
Today, my professor gave me a huge lecture in front of the class about showing up sick, about how I was endangering the lives of other students, and kicked me out of class. As I left, everyone applauded. I'm not sick, but suffering for horrible allergies. FML
Hyperloop
Today, I found out that I'm failing this semester because I've missed too many classes. I've missed the classes because I've been having panic attacks, a symptom of my anxiety disorder. I got the anxiety disorder because I was so afraid of failing school. FML
My Bucket
Today, my college class has a strict rule that ANY absence, even if it's because you're sick and have a doctor's note, will drop your grade a letter grade. I have a chronic illness. Today is the second time in the first two weeks that I've had to show up to class with a bucket. FML

Did you tell him that? Just tell him why you were absent, and if he still decides that's not a good excuse and gets rid of you then just tell the head of his department and get his ass in serious trouble. If the department won't listen to you then it's a real FML. Otherwise you're just a whiny fool.

Sounds like your professor needs commitment... to a psychiatric facility.

Maybe you can pass off your seizures as some kind of choir dance! Just scream "Praise jesus!" while doing it!

I've had a teacher like this. Assuming he knew why you missed practice, there really is nothing you can do with people like that. To them, their craft is everything, and it comes before mental or physical well-being. You'll find that pretty frequently in the professional performing arts world as well, so make sure you're willing to put up with this for the rest of your life if you plan to go into this field.

Why did you make the appointment if it conflicted with choral ensemble class? You are the neurologist's customer and the customer is always right. Tell him you'll see him at YOUR convenience. Having a seizure during a performance will sure harsh everyone's mellow. Get a new hobby.

As a professional musician with seizures, you can make it work with a little understanding from the people around you. I have been lucky enough to have never seized on stage during a performance, but I have "seizure plans" for each one I play. Don't be so close-minded about what the she can and cannot do. OutofLuck- It sucks, and I've been there. Does your school have an office of disability services? I'd see if you can get accommodations through them.

Have you ever tried to get an appointment with a medical specialist? Depending on how many doctors of that specialty are in your area, what kind of work you need done, and what condition you have, you may have to schedule appointments months out. Pretty sure the practice has the first say in the times available to make an appointment with them in the first place, regardless of what crazy kind of demand-side capitalist system you think they might operate (haha) on. Plus, did it occur to you she might be going to the neurologist in an attempt to gain control over her seizures? Quit trolling FML and, speaking of, get a new hobby.

spunky_butt and jmeg, I was being facetious on both counts. I'm sure people would be compassionate if the OP seized during a performance. They wouldn't be rushing the box office for their money back. Also, I know how the medical system in this country works. The patient is the bottom of the food chain, so everything is done for the convenience and profit of the insurance companies, the imaging clinics, the hospitals, the doctors, the nurses and the doctors' billing staff, in that order. "Lighten up, Frances. Maybe someday one of these men is going to save your life."

your seizures are not his problem. sorry. you need to be bigger and give someone else a chance.

@15: Really? You are a douche. NEWS FLASH to everyone, epilepsy is not always a severe disorder. A person can have partial seizures, where they can be awake for part of the seizure, or simply "pass out" for a period of time. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 13. In 10 years (I am 23 now) I have only had 7 seizures, all of which were minor. Not all of us have the grand mal, shaking on the floor type. DON'T BE IGNORANT. I sang in a choir from age 5 until age 22, and never did my epilepsy affect a performance. OP, your director suffers from severe asshole syndrome. Do you go to college in Iowa by chance? My asshole choir prof just moved there, and I could certainly see him telling a student this. If he dares trying to kick you out, take it to the dean. No prof can hold a medical absence against you.
