Today, my father tried to excuse his alcoholism by saying that his stomach stops working, and he needs to drink vodka to get it started again. FML

If you are an alcoholic I think it can be dangerous to go cold turkey so you have to do it is as the doctor recommends. But that really sucks OP. I hope you get some support for yourself - it is torture to the person with alcoholism and loved ones.

Unless you're 5 years old, I don't think that's reliable information.

That's funny since alcohol is known to reduce gastric motility....

This is, unfortunately, a very real side effect of late stage alcoholism. Alcohol has a lot of calories. They are very fluid calories - calories that pass through your intestines easily. When you eat regular food, it cannot move as easily. So it gets bottled up. Drinking liquid calories frees that up and allows the alcoholic to have a "normal" bowel movement. The good news is that he is apparently still eating at least once a day. The bad news is this is progressive and it will not be long before he will be unable to stomach normal dietary food at all. His body will reject it and he will find himself vomiting anything he does eat except the smallest amount of food. Grains normally are tolerated the best. You can't make him stop, but you can give him information for him to make a choice. Take him to the doctor and tell the doctor what you just told us. The doctor will almost surely tell him that if he doesn't stop drinking his life expectancy is under 24 months. It could be longer depending on a variety of factors. I am sorry you're going through this, but I agree with previous comments that you should either seek out a qualified counselor (my recommendation) or seek support through Al-Anon. I've watched a family member drink himself to death, and am watching another do it now. I can give them information, and can not participate/watch when they partake, but we all have free will. I learned from watching the first death, by sibling did too. We just learned different things. I sought counseling to learn how to deal with my emotions. He never did. Children of alcoholics often need counseling to learn that skill that alcoholics don't have, let alone know how to teach. To the wife of OP. Gentle help will do more than any other remedy for your husband.

This brings back memories. Dad passed away 6 months ago, unfortunately the vodka didn't help pancreatic cancer. RIP Dad.
