Today, my brother's home for his annual visit, lectures my parents once about their eating habits. They promptly throw away all of their junk food. I'm there every Sunday, and have been telling them to eat healthier for medical reasons. They never listen. He's in sales, and I'm in med school. FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Ozempic pushers
Today, my parents came for a visit and spent the whole time pressuring me to ask my doctor for medication to lose weight. FML
Today, my uncle gave me a lecture on how I eat too much "unhealthy" junk food, and that it can be very harmful for me. All the while smoking a cigarette. FML
Mother knows best
Today, while visiting my parents, I observed that I've been able to visit more often because I've avoided getting sick the whole year. My mother responded by reminding me that I need to get my act together if I'm going to lose weight and get healthier. Not the reaction I hoped for, Mom. FML
Today, I overheard my ripped, handsome, genetically perfect brother telling my mom how "fat people" make him "nervous". I have only recently accepted my weight, after struggling for years. I now understand why my brother rarely talks to me. FML
I told you so
Today, my parents brought home lunch from a shady grocery store deli. They mused about how hard I am to feed because I turned it down; the last time I ate anything from there, it gave me botulism, and it tastes horrible anyway. They both got sick. Now I'm playing nurse to both. No apologies yet. FML
Skinny love
Today, despite begging my parents to get food other than diet and weight loss stuff, they refused. I'm bullied for being skinny on a daily basis. FML
Everyone's an expert
Today, my sister's husband, who's never even been to college let alone medical school, told me that my cancer is not hereditary, despite a deep family history. He instead swears it's due to my "poor lifestyle and eating habits." Mind you, he's a 300 lbs, fall-down drunk with multiple DUIs. FML
Restrictions
Today, the school called my dad telling him they want to put me on a diet, because they're worried about my weight. FML
Betrayed
Today, I found out that my husband never actually took our new healthy lifestyle seriously when his coworker told me that now, instead of at the house, he keeps beer and cigars at his brother's house, and visits the Burger King drive through every day for lunch. FML
Today, despite feeling healthier than ever, losing fat, gaining muscle and having perfect blood results, my morbidly obese relatives keep telling me that my new vegan diet is "unhealthy". FML

He has charisma, you don't. Med school is right for you -- you can make tons of money even if you have no personality.

Don't make a big deal out of it. Maybe they just threw away the junk food to make their son feel better, since they see him so rarely. But that doesn't mean they'll suddenly change their eating habits just because of a speech. And if they actually do, you should be happy they're eating healthier.

you have to admit he's a MUCH better salesman than you are!! Medics are just geeks ... If you want to change peoples' behavior, you studied the wrong subject ... Fail.

Well, you've been presented a very interesting test subject. Look back to their behaviour, think about their reactions, and use this knowledge to have an idea of how ordinary, average people will react to your recommendations as a doctor. Think of the approach used by your brother, and try to find a better way to make people listen to your advices. It's most likely simply a question of the vocabulary used, or of the intonations while making the recommendations. Or it is really, as was previously suggested, because your parents don't respect your knowledge as a doctor-to-be, and believe that they know better than you.

He's a salesman. If he wasn't more persuasive then you he'd probably be fired already.

Dude, that's just an awful thing to say! I don't know whether or not OP would say this, but f*ck you!

He's in sales which means its not always about the facts, he's persuasive.

Or maybe it's because they see him much less often and want to keep him happy while he's there...

lol! true. doctors don't need humor, charisma, or a soul to bring a paycheck home ;3

people ignore facts. they respond best to fear. learn how fox news behaves.

I'm gonna be in med-school soon and the situation is the other way around; my family telling ME to eat healthier. >.<

What's the FML there - he is in sales - meaning he is good at convincing people. Be glad that he managed to convince them of the right thing, and maybe you can even learn something from him.

st0815, I agree
spazz1824 0
very true. he has the skills to sell the idea. which u obviously lacked. I still don't see how this is a true FML?
perdix 31
Oddly enough, doctors make more money from the patients that DON'T listen. The ones that take the doctor's advice seriously don't come back much. OP, with your poor skills of persuasion, you should be a very successful doc:)

He's obviously a bigger douchebag and is more pushy. He actually threw out their junk food. Also, eff you both. Leave them alone.

It says "they" threw it away implying her parents. -.- Their ultimate choice.
idkweird 0
Most likely just to shut the guy up!
BLNovelist 0
Why would they bother? If they didn't mind having the OP tell them to throw it all way, why would they suddenly throw it all away just to shut up a sibling that rarely comes by?

This. Sibling rivalry sucks but you've got to let it go at some point. If you're in med school, you must be at least 21; now's a good time to act like an adult.

he's in sales so of course he is gonna be more persuasive

he just sold them the health idea. It's easy for him
