Today, my boyfriend went to ask my dad for my hand in marriage. All I could make out from the door was mumbling, until profanities started flying. My boyfriend shouted "well she's a SINGLE bitch now!" and stormed out of the house. My dad still refuses to tell me what happened in there. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I heard my boyfriend talking with my father in the backyard. I thought he was asking for my hand in marriage. He was actually telling him about his plans to break up with me. FML
Today, I happily told my parents that my boyfriend proposed to me last night. My dad's response? "Marry that goofy bastard and you're out of the will." FML
Oil and water
Today, my parents met my boyfriend, and to say it went badly is an understatement. My mom went outside to relax by chain smoking and the shouting, and the screaming only ended when my dad took my boyfriend by the scruff of the neck and threw him out the front door into the street. FML
Today, my boyfriend proposed to me. Everything was going perfectly, right up until he brought me back to his house to tell his family the good news. When I excused myself to the restroom, I overheard his mom say, "I thought you were going to break up with that stupid slut?" Welcome to the family. FML
Today, my boyfriend asked my father for permission to marry me. My father refused, on the basis that I'm the only person in the house with a job, and if I leave he will have to start looking for work. My boyfriend won't marry me without his permission, and my lazy father won't change his mind. FML
Today, my boyfriend met my parents. Within minutes, my dad managed to verbally sever his balls and reduce him to tears, "just for fun" apparently. FML
Traditional
Today, I asked my girlfriend's father if I could marry his daughter. He smiled, shook my hand, and said "No. Now get out of my house." FML
Today, my boyfriend asked me to marry him. When I happily told my dad, he kept asking if I'd consider taking back my ex. FML
Punching
Today, I introduced my boyfriend to my parents for the first time. My dad took one look at him, sighed and said, "You deserve someone better. Someone who is responsible, and has their priorities straight in life." Beyond upset, I told my dad that I love him. My dad disgruntledly responded, "I was talking to him." FML
Fight!
Today, my boyfriend has never gotten along with my dad, but this afternoon during what I thought was a completely normal conversation, he just stood up, yelled he couldn’t take my dad anymore, punched him in the nose, dumped me, and drove away. FML

They probably were playing Mario Cart. I always get pissed off when I play that.

To everyone commenting; could it be that the father said something to the OP's boyfriend which could have made her seem like a bad person such as telling the boyfriend that the OP cheated on him?
CrewBoy 10
That was my first thought.

I think the dad must have. If he only said "no, you don't have my permission" I doubt it would have ended like that. There is a reason why her dad wont tell her what happened, and I think her best bet would be to as her now ex-boyfriend.

Exactly! :)

Not that I have a problem with it, but I noticed you use the word "bitch" a lot.

My guess is the father doesn't like the boyfriend and said she was sleeping around (or something similar) to get rid of him.

Well someone's not going to be invited to the wedding... In all seriousness I hope you work things out with your boyfriend.

I'm guessing your dad doesn't like your (ex) boyfriend, and decided to tell him about some skeletons in your closet to curb his desire to marry you? If not, I have no idea what could've caused that reaction from your boyfriend.

Unless the OP approved of this idea, the boyfriend was a dick for treating his girlfriend like her's dad property. He was also a dick for using profanities, because no matter how unreasonable the other person is, swearing is unlikely to change his mind. If the OP did approve of this idea, she's an embarrassment to women everywhere and should be ashamed of letting the boyfriend treat her like property.

I don't understand the problem with the asking her father. It's mostly done these days to get approval of the relationship, to get on the parent's good side, and to show respect. What's so bad about that?
unknown_user5566 27
What the hell are you talking about? These days, asking for the father's blessing is less about "asking for permission", and more about being polite/making a nice gesture. My husband asked for my dad's blessing to propose to me. So does that mean I'm an "embarassment to women everywhere"? You are unbelievably ignorant.
ideasrule 13
Then let me ask you this: why is it (usually) the father who gets asked, not the mother? Why does the girlfriend's parents (usually) not get asked? You are clearly ignorant about the abusive history of this tradition and the continuing harm it has on today's society.

A question is harming society? Jesus...your head must be so far up your ass that you can't even find it on Apple Maps. So does having the woman make majority of the wedding plans explain world hunger for you as well? How about hurricanes and earthquakes...are they caused by males generally being the ones to propose?
unknown_user5566 27
I will say, for the second time now, THE GIRLFRIEND'S PARENTS DO GET ASKED. I'm sure some boyfriend's do ask the mom as well, you probably just don't hear about it as often. You are correct- I am not aware of the "abusive" history of this tradition. But guess what? My husband asked for my father's blessing, and all hell didn't break loose. A few of my friend's husbands asked for the father's blessing, too. Clearly a new idea about this custom is forming, and you are too narrow minded to see it.

I would also like to point out that studies have been done proving that swearing actually helps get your point across. it adds emphasis and makes the statement more memorable if done... tastefully :) Kyleekay, I couldn't agree with you more :)

20, you are seriously an idiot. My dad would be extremely disappointed if my boyfriend didn't ask for his blessing to propose and he doesn't consider me property at all. I'm his baby girl, and be wants to know that my boyfriend will be good enough for me. Being POLITE enough to ask him and/or my mother first to bless our union makes a wonderful impression and shows that my boyfriend is respectful of the fact that my father would appreciate the gesture. Stop being a pushy asshole and trash talking a perfectly acceptable traditional thing. It's not hurting society in any way in this day and time.

Asking for the fathers blessing is a very old fashioned thing to do. It's a sign of respect to not only the father, but to the girl as well. It's not saying she is her fathers property because she still has a choice to say yes or no.
DocBastard 40
Ideasrule - Sorry, but you've got it all wrong. It's not harmful, disrespectful, sexist, or any of the other silly things you've called it. It's a sign of respect for both the woman and her father. Why the father? The same reason the woman's family generally pay for the ceremony. The same reason brides wear white dresses. The same reason brides are "given away": Tradition.

I thought there was a difference between asking for a blessing and, as OP said, asking for her hand. Isn't asking for her hand used when the woman is a minor, and blessing used when she is an adult?

You left your bf alone with your Dad?? Never, ever do that!

They're both assholes. Your dad for telling him whatever he said and your boyfriend for just leaving you like that.
