Today, my boyfriend of over a year told me he wanted to learn Korean before Spanish. Apparently, being able to sing along to Gangnam Style is more important to him than being able to speak with my family. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Truth bomb
Today, I showed up at my boyfriend's work to surprise him by speaking in Spanish, his first language. I've been taking classes secretly. He smiled, kissed me, and then finished telling his friend, in Spanish, that I'm boring and ugly but he's got nothing better going on. FML
Today, I met my boyfriend's very strict and traditional Korean parents. I had to listen to them while they called me a skank and how I was fat and ugly compared to nice, pretty, Korean girls. They don't know I speak Korean. FML
Noise annoys
Today, I told my boyfriend he is good at singing. Now he won't stop. FML
Today, my husband thought it would be funny to tell my 10-year-old son that if he wanted to get girls, he had to do the Gangnam Style. My son has now non-stop been doing the Gangnam Style. FML
Are you OK?
Today, my husband started taking language classes. Not something sensible like French or Spanish, but fucking Latin! Why the fuck would anyone learn Latin? What a stupid fuck. FML
Today, my boyfriend asked me if we were going to become "that stupid couple that sings cheesy songs to each other." I just spent the past 3 months writing the perfect song that I was planning on singing to him tonight. FML
Lost in translation
Today, my boyfriend lamented that I do not profess my love for him as often and poetically as he does his for me. I try my best, but he's Italian and I am German, and this is not a level playing field. FML
I'm confused
Today, after I recently started working in Korean company, my manager said, "Speak Korean, this is Korea." I started communicating in Korean for a few days, but then my manager says : "Why you talk to me in Korean ?" FML
Today, I found out that my boyfriend of 2 months has been faking his southern accent. FML
Today, I found out that all the everyday Spanish words and phrases my boyfriend has been teaching me have very vulgar meanings. I found this out after I said a few to our waitress. FML

Shouldn't more of the focus being on your parents learning the language of the country they live in? Can't really blame him for not catering to your parents when you've only been dating a year. Chances are you will break up sometime, and this is really a choice that should be about what he wants, and not what you want.

You're assuming her parents live in the US with her. Maybe they don't.

They may not live with her in America but you would assume that they'd want to visit her here instead of expecting her to always cater to them and see them. In the case of them visiting they should learn English as well. Arizona isn't a border state either so most likely they live in the U.S. and in that case they should try to learn the country's native language.

#20 I agree, her family may not live in the US, what a cheap prejudice. I'm French and my fiancé Irish. I expect him to learn French eventually to communicate with my family. I will teach French to our kids and I would like him to be able to talk with them in my language. Besides, learning a language requires commitment and motivation, especially for a difficult language like Korean. So I doubt her boyfriend will actually go far in his learning if his goal is to sing along Gangnam Style…

This is OP's boyfriend of a year. That's very different to a Fiancé!

I can agree with him not wanting to learn a language after only a year of dating. It sounds to me like the issue is that OP and her bf are on two different levels in their relationship. Learning a language for your partner's family is a HUGE sign of commitment. And in a country with such a high divorce rate, ya bf probably wouldnt want to make that kind of gesture after only ONE year. That kind of thing sets up expectations and I can't fault him for not wanting to rush into things too soon. It really seems like a lot of FMLers want to jump down his throat because "OMG you didnt commit youself to the woman you're dating for one whole year! OP should dump him and find a better man!" Honestly, that's the kind of mindset that pushes partners away, both men and women. I guess the "male version" of it would be when a man invites his mother along on the second date (i read an FML like that a while ago). Again, it sets up expectations of commitment that might make the other partner feel uncomfortable to have forced on him/her. Also, #32 if the parents dont live in the US, then learning their language wouldnt be a high priority after just a year. I mean, I dont see how many people would go to another country to meet them after such a short period of time, as opposed to if they lived in the same area and were within driving distance. Maybe if they were dating for a few years, and the bf was possibly thinking of proposing, then he would want to meet his potential future in-laws. and #38 Arizona is a boarder state with Mexico. Though where the parents live is irrelevant, I'm just pointing it out.

Arizona isn't a border state? Perhaps you use a different map. That must be it.

#38, let me know when you're in your 50s/60s how easy it is to learn a new language.

38 - So, according to your logic, all of the American tourists know the language of the countries they visit. I had no idea, considering I've seen a bunch of tourists in my country who can't speak a word of Spanish. 46 - I just find it sad that people don't really care about learning languages. Why does learning another language have to be a huge sign of commitment? If I were OP's boyfriend, I would try to learn, not for her family, but because learning languages is awesome and useful. What better time is there to learn a language than when you actually have someone to practice it with?

38 - Arizona is a border state, you dumbass. That's why half of our population is illegals who refuse to learn English. Which is why I personally refuse to learn Spanish. And honestly, I know this will get thumbed down because you all think I'm being ignorant, but until you live here and on a DAILY BASIS interact with people who do not speak English (yet have customer service jobs in America) you really cannot judge. It's incredibly frustrating to deal with incompetent drivers who don't know the laws because they don't know our language.

Really??? Come on... Lol. I feel really bad for you. Gangnam style is the most overplayed thing ever, it's starting to get as bad as jersey shore. Thank god that show is over.

Girlfriends come and go, knowledge of cool language stays. You should learn Korean yourself too. and - teach your family some English.
Yongchi 11
I agree. I am Korean, and live there too, and I learned English (they teach it in our schools) not just because it was expected of me, but because someday I might move to the U.S., and I want to stretch my communication and understanding skills.

Gangnam style isn't even cool anymore
twiztedone 19
Wait let me get this straight! Your mad because your boyfriend, which by the sound of it, grew up and lives in an English speaking country, wants to learn a different language, but your family doesn't want to and your mad at him? Sounds like a typical entitlement thing to me! Have your family learn English so they can communicate with the people!
MidnaLink 35
No, she's pissed that he would rather learn Korean for Gangnam Style than learn Spanish for her family.

Valid.

I always find it interesting when FMLers have the uncanny ability to leap to conclusions in a single bound. How do you guys know the parents aren't learning English? You don't. For all you know they are, but last time I checked, it takes a while to properly speak a language. Besides, regardless of the parents actions or inactions, the FML is about the boyfriend, NOT them. The fact that he would rather learn a language to sing along to a song instead of communicating with actual people shows his priorities are ****** anyway. Lastly, some of you can't even speak your damned language properly, and you grew up here. Pot, meet legion of native-speaking kettles.
redmane 21
Exactly. My boyfriends parents speak Spanish and a little bit of English and I can communicate with them. I'm learning Spanish for cultural diversity and for accommodation.

Maybe you should be glad? If singing along to Gangnam style is more important to him he most likely doesn't have anything interesting to say to your parents anyway.. And now he can't embarrass you.. I'd say disaster avoided..
