Today, I woke up excited for my trip to Jamaica with my friends. We went to the airport, and I gave them my passport to check in. They gave it back. It had expired three weeks ago. I watched my friends board the plane while I'm stuck in the city. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Bastards!
Today, I found out that my passport expired two days ago, two days before my first vacation abroad. I only found out when the airline employee scanned it at check-in, looked at me with sympathy, and said, "I don't think you're going anywhere today." My friends are currently posting beach photos while I'm filling out passport renewal forms. FML
Today, I went to the airport to start the amazing 3 week vacation in Costa Rica that I've been saving for and planning for more than a year. They wouldn't let me on the plane because my passport expires in less than 6 months. FML
Enjoy yourself, I guess
Today, I went with my girlfriend to the airport for some much needed vacation time. We arrived on time but were stopped at the gate when they told me I didn't have the right passport. The plane left without me. My girlfriend did too. FML
The devil is in the details
Today, after cancelling work, arguing with my family, scrambling to pack my bags, speeding to the airport and filling in immigration forms to fly out to have a much needed holiday, I wasn't allowed to check in. My passport has less than 6 months away from expiration on it. Yes, that's a thing, apparently. FML
Jamaica? I hardly know her
Today, my mom and I went to catch our flight to Jamaica. She ended up being detained and questioned, because she packed hairspray, shampoo, drinks, basically half the shit you're not allowed to have in your luggage. We missed our flight. FML
Nicked it
Today, we're taking the plane home from Dublin after a school trip that I only barely got onto after troubles with my passport. Luckily for me, a kind person had decided to save me from the passport this evening - together with the rest of my wallet. I'm stuck. FML
The old switcheroo
Today, I was unable to go on my dream vacation because I thought I'd lost my passport. Feeling incredibly stupid, I had no choice but to watch my plane depart without me. Shortly after, my brother handed me passport, saying that since I wasn't going on my trip, I could use my refund to pay for his cat's surgery. My trip was non-refundable. FML
Today, I was heading out for my flight to Australia. I'd put a padlock on my luggage to keep my wallet and passport safe, only to realize way too late that I'd left the key at home. I couldn't get at my passport and ended up missing my flight and my whole vacation along with it. FML
Today, I was stuck at the airport overnight waiting for my flight for about 5 hours. I then went and looked at the departures board. It said that my flight had already departed. FML
Today, after spending 2 years saving for my flights, I was denied boarding due to issues with my passport. I heading straight to the embassy only to be told a replacement will take 8 days. The airline will only hold my place for 7. FML

shouldn't you check these things before you go, especially if you were really excited.

I can understand losing your passport. My mother lost hers before we went to Mexico. But I bet you can still go, you'd just be a few days late.

What sorta' idiot doesn't check they have a valid passport when going on a trip? I mean, that's literally the ONLY thing you need to remember (if you're picking up your tickets at the airport)

How could that happen? To book a ticket to most places you have to have at least six months validity on your passport. How could you book?
busyizzy86 0
They only validate it if you use a travel agency or something. If you book your ticket online via Orbitz or something, it's YOUR responsibility to check your passport. OP, YDI. Who doesn't check their passport when they plan to go somewhere?

A smart person knows when his or her passport expires. Nuff said.

YDI. My best friend went to Jamacia and checked her brand new passport like 100 times before she left to make sure everything was correct...

YDI, who DOESN'T know that you have to make sure your passport doesn't expire before you leave your country??? You don't even live in the EU, so you have no excuse (I guess some EU citizens might forget about their passports, since we don't need them inside the EU...)

You still need some form of official photo ID within the EU, and you need a Passport to enter/leave the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania.

Its not hard to forget when your passport expires; they're good for 10 YEARS. My family once went on a trip to Paris and my dad didn't realize that his passport would expire before we landed. its not a big deal OP; most airlines will let you change the date of your flight for a small or no fee. Go to the passport office on the next business day and just get it renewed.

You're right, it's not hard to forget, but the point is, OP should have checked. I have a passport and have no idea when it expires, however, I do know I got it a few years back so I have a good 6 or 7 years before I have to renew it, but you know what? Before I buy expensive pane tickets, I'd still check! Because it's easy to slip up and assume its still valid when it's not. So, it's the OP's fault.
