Today, I was given a $100 cookbook as a gift by a co-worker. The man who shares a desk with me didn't realise it was mine, as he was at lunch when I got it, so he decided to give it to my boss when he walked in. My boss is refusing to return it. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
What?
Today, my coworker got a raise by making our boss give me a pay cut for doing his job while he was slacking off. As we were heading home for the day, he found $100. FML
Today, for what has seemed to be the hundredth time, my labeled bagged lunch was stolen from the fridge at my workplace. I stormed into my boss's office ready to complain, only to find him eating it. FML
Under new management
Today, I got a talking-to at work from my new manager for eating other peoples' lunches. Immediately afterwards, I watched my manager leave the room, take MY lunch, and begin eating it. Apparently my new manager is the thief, and I'm now the office pariah who gets the blame. Nobody believes me. FML
Well played
Today, during lunch, my coworker offered me her food, claiming she was full. I was still quite hungry, so I accepted it. Halfway through eating the sandwiches, my boss walked in and started interrogating people over who took his lunch. I quickly realized I was the one eating it. FML
Today, we got our Christmas bonuses. Instead of money, the company decided to give us all lunch boxes with the company name on them. I went ahead and put my lunch in mine, then put it in the break-room refrigerator. Apparently so did all the other employees. Now I can't find mine. FML
Wealth gap
Today, a coworker threw my lunch in the trash. They'd just got back from holidays, and I use the same containers they do. My leftovers "looked like something they'd eat", so they thought it was something they'd forgotten before going on holidays. It was leftovers that I'd been spacing out, trying to make last till payday. FML
Today, when I went to work, my nice coworker gave me a gift basket. And cookies. I had to tell him that I caught his kid keying my car last night. FML
Today, I went with my sister to her company Christmas party. They had a gift raffle, my number was called and I won $25 for a local restaurant. A few moments later, the manager came over and said, "You don't work here? You can't have that" and took it from me. FML
Today, I went and bought lunch for all the people I work with. The only meal the place forgot was mine. FML
Today, I gave my boss a gift card as a late birthday present, since I wasn't in the office on his actual birthday. He accused me of trying to bribe my way to a promotion, and suspended me on the spot. FML

Get your other co worker to vouch that it was a gift and report your boss for theft. Unless your company as a strict policy against gift giving.

If your boss won't return it your coworker is liable for getting you a new book as far as I'm concerned

Wow. Because when I see an expensive looking book on the table that I SHARE with another coworker I don't play it safe and assume it's theirs. Oh, oh, and it gets better, I give it to Boss because surely it's nobody else's. SURELY. Honestly, it sounds like they were trying to suck up to boss by giving an expensive gift without actually paying anything

I would make your coworker buy you another one. Why would he just assume it was his to give away when you share a desk. It's his fault more than anything. That sucks tho OP

Words fail me. The co-worker who gave your boss the book is not only a kiss ass and is also a jack ass for for just randomly picking up items and assuming they can be given away. Report to HR and threaten to get police involved as this is theft which ever way you look at it. OP please do a follow up

Get your coworker to vouch for you. If there is anyone above your boss in the company, go to them

So your coworker sees something sitting on a shared desk, has no idea who it belongs to or why it's there, and decides the most appropriate course of action is to give it away without asking? He sounds like a real peach.

isn't that theft?

The action of your coworker who gave the book to your boss is so obviously wrong I have to assume they knew exactly what they were doing and either out of spite or jealousy gave the book to your boss. That the boss wouldn't return it when it was explained to him implies that he is punishing you for some reason. You need a new job - You have a toxic coworker and a terrible boss. But let the book incident go at work until you find a new job because it's not worth getting fired or getting a bad recommendation over.

if you let it go, you are asking for more of the same. if you fired for reporting a crime to the police, then it's quite possibly actionable.
