Today, I took my friends out to an expensive restaurant for my birthday treat. They had arranged for a surprise birthday cake for me which I cut, very happily, while they chanted birthday wishes. When the bill came, I discovered I was supposed to pay for my great 'surprise' cake. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I went to dinner with friends for my birthday. During the whole thing they insisted that we get whatever we wanted and celebrate, but when the check came, they all looked at me expectantly. I just bought my friends $150 of food for my birthday present. FML
Thanks, I hate it
Today, it's my birthday and my friends and I went to our favorite pub to celebrate. As I'm a little broke at the moment, they all offered to buy me birthday drinks. Which I later learned meant that they would order them for me and bring them to the table, but put everything on my tab. FML
Today, my friends took me out to the most expensive restaurant in town to celebrate my promotion, we ordered everything with expensive drinks too. They 'took a smoke break' and left me with the bill. FML
Today, I celebrated my birthday with my friend who has the same birthday by going out to dinner with a bunch of our friends. The waiter brought out a cake for my friend but not for me. No one noticed my exclusion. I sang happy birthday on my birthday. FML
Where d'you go?!
Today, I thought it would be nice to take my girlfriend out to a nice restaurant for my birthday. She got a little headache after we ordered, so she went outside to get some air. I ate a $100 meal and had Happy Birthday sang to me by the restaurant staff. Alone. FML
How can I make this about me?
Today, it's my birthday. My wife took me to my favorite restaurant for dinner. She made me pay for my birthday dinner, along with hers. She also got me a gift card to HER favorite store. FML
The hair of the dog
Today, my friends threw me a surprise birthday party. I was genuinely surprised—and also genuinely hungover from celebrating my birthday alone the night before because they'd all told me they were busy. FML
Today, it was my birthday. But instead of a decent surprise, my friends decided to smash a cake on my face and unhook my dress, while taking a video of it. In a public shopping mall. FML
It's the thought that counts
Today, my friends threw me a surprise birthday party. The problem? My birthday is tomorrow. I spent the entire evening pretending I was surprised and happy, all while knowing they got the date wrong. FML
Today, it's my birthday. I'm a pastry chef by profession. Not only did my family buy a cake from my bakery, I had to make it myself and inscribe it with 'Happy Birthday Dad'. The worst part is, they asked money from me to pay for it. FML

Why would you take your friends out for your birthday? If they knew you were paying for the bill, they probably assumed you would pay for the cake, too.

Wait, #11 - are you trying to commiserate and complain that your friends planned dinner for you, took you out, and split the bill - as if that's something to be upset about? Did they split your meal with you, or make you pay for half of the entire bill? If it was half of the ENTIRE bill, then MAYBE I could see why you'd be a little peeved, but after they planned a special night for you, is it really too much to ask that maybe you bother to pitch in just a tad? To the OP, that does suck - but who's to say they even brought any money - sounds to me like you'd planned the evening on the basis that you would be treating them all. I personally wouldn't sit back and let a friend treat me on their birthday, but I also probably wouldn't spring for a cake on top of dinner if they chose a wicked expensive place either.

TO ALL ASSUMING THE OP SPLIT THE BILL OR WONDERING WHY HE PAID: This FML comes from Pakistan. Its a cultural thing. It's common courtesy for the person who invited out the friends to pay. The OP, being the "host", would therefore pay for his friends as he invited them to celebrate with him. It doesn't matter that it is was his birthday- this is standard. He did not SPLIT the bill, he paid for their meals. However they ordered him a "surprise" cake and then forced him to pay- this is incredibly rude and uncalled for in any culture. He would have already had spent a significant sum on their meals, without this expense. And think about it. He's paying for their meals and they wont even split to pay for a cake THEY got for HIM? Really now.

Well you deserve it. You took them out not the other way around.

#48- Yes the OP took them out, but HE didn't order the cake. It's like you inviting me to your birthday party, I buying you an xbox 360, and then informing you I used your credit card.

You should have simply not paid the cake because you didn't order it. Period ;) FYL and FYFs.
